As far as addons go you might want dbm
As far as weakaura go you can use tems pack which a lot of people use (there’s one for Ulduar too this one is for ToGC)

I also like to use a raid cd tracker for those bosses where you want to be able to call out defensives abilities.

But to maximise your raid lead nothing helps more than knowing the fight perfectly, you need to be able to know what’s going on and to understand how to call out people doing mistakes. That’s often why raidleading means you will do worse dps as you’re busy looking at what other people are doing.

For that I recommend watching in depth video guides, there’s many of them. Just keep looking till you feel you could explain the fight from A to Z from a tank/healer/dps perspective.

Once you feel you got enough mastery of everything
if you still got time you can plunge in the world of warcraftlogs. Being able to analyze logs and how to do fights better by understanding what people failed and by comparing with other groups can help you progress.

  1. Take items for yourself
  2. Give preference to friends/family
  3. Tell others to find other groups to gear up with
  4. Dissolve the group and blame those with log GS/Logs for any failures
  5. If someone doesn’t agree, ninja everything and leave

Really the biggest tip i would say is you need to research all the encounters thoroughly. Raid leader needs to know the fights from all aspects.

To add to what ÍllĂŒsĂźĂČñpĂłĂČh said, you need to be aware of everyone’s cooldowns, position etc.

As raid lead, you will be calling specific druid’s battle res on a very specific target. So you need to know who brez priority is. Or if Brez needs to be held off until later.

You need to set up cooldown rotation, aura mastery, dsac, hymn order etc.
Form groups appropriately. Make sure melee get haste buff, every group has passive healing, such as Vampiric touch, healing stream totem, etc.

But as a few others have said, you really need to know encounters inside out.
As a RL, you lead the raid. Imagine rest are sheep and won’t do anything until you ask them to.

A few other common RL lines/phrases are) are :

  • “Xplayer is main tank. MD/tricks on Xplayer”
  • “Lust now”
  • “Tesalyn Brez PlayerY”
  • “Azurim save your army for ads phase”
  • “Our Ret is dead, so our Hpala needs to put Judgelemt of Light on boss now”
  • “Keep healing tank stacks are still up”
  • “Swap to “X” target”
  • “Swap to new Skull marked target”
  • “spread out”
  • “Stop dps! Full stop dps!”

You forgot - lots and lots and lots of patience.

Be prepared to not do the best dps, tanking, or healing. Raid lead requires you to firstly explain the fight to new comers or refresh memories. Then you must keep an eye on every single person to make sure they are doing what you have instructed them do. Then you must keep an eye on the boss as well as DBM and call out incoming mechanics with ample time for people to avoid them.
If you failed to explain loot rules before hand you’ve possibly screwed over a lot of people and now have many pissed off at you. If someone messes up you need know how to provide constructive feed back instead of “you f-ing idiot! TAUNT!” or something similar. Keep logs of the raids you run with player names, loot they received, and performance.
Then there is the buffs. Good save your soul on that one. As raid lead it’s best to have one paly establish through pally power what and who all the pallys are going to buff. Food buff is probably going to be on you unless you assign someone or they volunteer. Inspect everyone to make sure their gear is gemmed and enchanted. The most important thing is to be positive and influential to everyone. When a group wipes a group gets pissed. So encourage them and make any adjustments. When a boss dies, let everyone know they did great.
To end it: Enjoy the head ache afterwards along with spread sheets to make sure someone isn’t screwing someone else out of loot next week.

People here have the highlights. Most if it will come down to practice.

  1. Tems is a great weak aura pack to use and it’s free.

  2. Get a major raid CD tracking weak aura. The most important to monitor and call for are Divine Sac and Aura Mastery.

  3. Take good notes for yourself, I record some of my attempts and watch them back when things go wrong after raid to find ways to improve.

  4. Have a lot of patience and a level head.

  5. Spend time learning the fights in detail. Just giving some examples of the Beasts fight and things you’ll want to actively remind your raiders of:

GORMOK

  • Tanks swap at X stacks on Gormok (probably 3).
  • Second Gormok tank should burn his big damage reduction CD on the second Impale to curb spike damage since the bosses damage ramps over time. You can clear their impale stacks with a BoP after the second tank swap.
  • Move into melee range with Snobolds (BoPs can also be used if it’s on a healer.
  • Melee should cleave off of the Snobold, you can cleave into the boss, but not onto a Snobold.

WORMS

  • Depends on your strat, but most people Lust and burn Acidmaw. Remember to call for it, people will forget.
  • Ranged and healers must spread 10 yards to prevent the splash of the poison that immobilizes players.
  • After poison goes out, tell everyone to stay calm and wait out Molten Spew before clearing their stacks. It’s always a few seconds after the spray goes out.
  • When one worm dies, the other enrages. Tanks take extra damage and you should call for Divine Sac and/or Fire Resist Aura Mastery for each Bile Spray. Spreading 10 yards is never more important.
  • Mobile worms MUST be faced away from the raid.
  • Threat drops when they burrow.

ICEHOWL

  • Tanks get stunned and trucked. Try to give them 1-2 defensive CDs per tank phase (pain supp, bubble sac, major tank CD, Guardian Spirit)
  • Call next up Divine Sacs (for stomp) and Frost Resist Aura Mastery (for breath)
  • Remind people to get away quickly from the charge. Have hunter ready with Tranq for when someone messes up.
  • Remind the tank to keep some distance and be ready with major defensive just incase.
  • Melee can stand at max range to avoid the knockback.

Mostly everyone is aware of their own personal responsibility (I say mostly)

Other than telling people they need to be doing X instead of Y

The only 2 things a RL needs to do is call for raid calldowns at appropriate times and call impactful mechanics incase people have lapsed in concentration

Eg. “Ability in 5, 4, 3
” for twins, “focus add” for redboi

The RL can’t play the character for people, they should know what they’re doing on an individual level

Sounds like my old GM😂. Dude took all the tank and dps gear, made a bunch of people quit, blamed everyone else along with his butt buddies and priod his friends as well. Most of the top players weren’t his good friends so we got screwed and left now the guild fell apart without us.

Learn the fights in and out and be cool. Be understanding that things happen. No one wants to listen to someone nerdrage in comms.
