I think at the start of new tiers when higher ilvl gear is raining, swapping to highest ilvl for mainstat + stam is going to be more valuable, yea. But when you are midseason to end season being gear available will equalize more so you can pick and choose between pieces with say - haste versatility and haste crit more freely. It also can give more weight to pieces with sockets on them as well since you can choose to socket for main stat (first socket) and versatility (secondary sockets).
The real question will come in where you see diminishing returns on your per point value of versatility against other secondary stats (in terms of damage) as most of the time for alot of classes you won’t be able to measure it against survivability and you’ll have to choose the small gain in survivability + damage vs a pure damage or cooldown/utility of another stat.
