Question about Def Cap and Crushing Blow

Once you reach the defense cap of 490 and 102.34 crush, what does adding more Def and a higher number to crush do? I know defense over 490 adds a little to your crush but is there any reason to keep raising those numbers? Should I now only mix and match my gear to try and keep those numbers as well as raise my armor and HP’s?

Higher defense means less damage taken in general, means more EHP, means you’ll be harder to kill.

Once you’ve hit the 490/102.34, it means you now get to start playing around with your gear set up to try and hit the hit + expertise cap so that your threat climbs up while still being uncrittable + uncrushable.

490 is the soft cap for defense. After that it still has value but not as much as it still adds avoidance. Above crush cap offers damage avoidance or mitigation depending on what it is. For a paladin more block means more threat.

You’re mixing and matching Avoidance and Effective Health.

The only time any of the Avoidance stats have an impact on Effective Health is when you can guarantee yourself uncrushable, so that falls off the table and you can assume every hit gets Blocked, so that gets added in as well.

EH is only relevant to stuff you can guarantee or you can’t count it.

That being said, this is true and good advice. Once you’re at the point where you have no crits and no crushes, you end up needing to only add more EH (via Armor/Stamina) or more threat (via Hit/Expertise/Tank specific threat stat). That all is based on the boss in question. Gruul is not a crazy threat race so EH is nice, but Shade of Aran is all threat all the time.

Technically there is No Def cap but the reason why it’s 490 is to push being crit off the table

Here is the hit table the higher the Def/Avoidance it pushes something off the table right to left.
Miss → Dodge → Parry → Block → Crushing Blow → Critical Strikes → Hit

At 102.4% you can’t be crushed

Def continues to add past 490 too (Block, Parry, Dodge, Miss) but it isn’t worth it when you can directly get Block, Dodge, Parry.

So since Def isn’t that valuable now past 490 it’s better to focus on other stats, expertise, dodge, parry, block, arm pen instead, HP, Str, Agil, Crit.
