Question about add-ons

Hello all, I am a casual gamer and old, so not very computer savvy. I don’t raid, I just enjoy leveling many toons. My question is add-ons safe?

One time I tried to download couple of them but I was unable because my software protection would not allow it.

I know that the majority of you use them, do you worry about malware, viruses, etc.?

Thanks.

i would say like everything on the internet, it depends on where you get them from whether its safe or not.

i believe most people either use the Curse website, the Curse app, or Github. Curse website and Github will require you to manually drag the addon folder from your downloads into the right right WoW folder, while the Curse app will just automatically do that for you

Addons are safe from the right source.
CurseForge is like the biggest and most known. Been using it for my WoW for years.

This link will take you to a download of an application
Go to link - scroll down and press “CurseForge standalone” - it’s very important you do that specific download.

https://www.curseforge.com/download/app#download-options

Once downloaded, you need to install it. Once installed, within the Curse app, you will need to set up WoW directory. I don’t remember what it looks like, but Im sure there is a video on youtube or somehting.

Once that all done, using the App, you can start downloading addons and they will automatically be added into your WoW game. You can google what are good addons to have, and try to find them on the app.

I just want to point out that no addon should be “installed” through an .exe file or installer. The majority of addons are just some plaintext files in .lua files or .xml files, maybe some art assets. The game itself runs these plaintext files. (Plaintext means you can right click these files and open them in notepad. You should be able to read the content)

As others pointed out, Curse is a good source for addons. They even have an installer (I think its through Overwolf, which is the company that bought Curse) which should handle everything for you.

Thank you all for the useful information.

As others have said, it’s less about the addons’ safety themselves, and more the source you get them from. I’d recommend CurseForge

Also, allow me to take the opportunity to mention a few addons that’ll make the casual experience way more bearable:

-Questie gives you a good tracker and quest guide to help keep you from getting lost. However, if you’re the sort who likes to figure things out for yourself, skip this one

-Guidelime is an addition to Questie that will give you a good quest route, as the old world can be a bit confusing on appropriate areas to quest in for your level. Again, skip if you prefer to figure things out yourself

-Bartender4 gives you extensive customization for your ability bars

-Pawn helps you see how good a piece of gear is for you. Although it isn’t perfect if you don’t fiddle with the settings, it’s a good guideline for casual play

-Bagnon or Baggins will help sort your inventory

-VoiceOver is a fun one that uses AI-generated voices to give NPCs voice lines when you speak to them (currently only available for Vanilla zones) although it can get a bit distracting if you like to watch YouTube on the side

Yeah curseforge is amazing, just makes getting addons and keeping them up to date so much easier. I’d reckon anything you get through there should be legit and safe.

I agree. I have used curseforge for a long time now and it make things super easy to keep addons updated for both classic and retail.
