This is a gem, a map even.
Correct. When Critical Role is being played by one actor, the opinions are not authentic.
The “ever-present vocally outraged” can be filtered down into reality.

This is something that I never considered, but it would explain why most forum arguments devolve into this:
lol
I actually laughed.
Every random i enter i just thought how much better any rated is, no kidding. At least i play with like minded peep.
Nobody liked wod the ladders were pretty much dead from wod to legion and rbg from wod to… SL, which do have more activity in both arenas and bgs. I mean last time i dd rbgs where in MoP.
Legion there was no character customization, blizzard told you what to do.
BfA best gear was never pvp gear. Sucked from day one to last day.
Honestly all it requires is 3 tier of upgrades instead of 4 and a weapon. I think this is a commitment everyone could be on. .
And people will still get comboed regardless though because damage is simple too high regardless of 20/13/7 ilvls of difference. The fire mage is still going to be a danger.
You won’t believe what I just heard they’re doing to the water and frogs…
The only way to gear should be through Pet Battles.
This is not fair, pets drop like candy from PvE content but not from PvP content.
^sarcasm
Somebody train me lol
You say that like that isn’t exactly how mmos and other “live” games are iterated upon.
You want to get into playing basketball? Sure, here play against Michael Jordan to learn the ropes
Oh, basketball sucks and isn’t fun? Why would you say that?
Why not? Oh because that would mean you would need to have better skillz to kill your opponent.
We should all be so lucky. You get better by playing with/against better people. I wish my season had went a little better so I was in a position to continually be playing really hard games with excellent players, that’s where you really learn something.
This is broadly true, but there’s a limit to it. If the skill gap is too large you learn basically nothing. Someone new to Marvel vs. Capcom isn’t going to learn much when they get infinited to death as soon as they get hit.
It’s better to play against people who are as good or slightly better than you than it is to play against people who are way worse or way better. Michael Jordan isn’t learning much by curbstomping people who have never held a basketball before either.
Short answer, yes people wanted gear progression, remember cata or wod? You didn’t need 180000 honor to get a full set, not only that but back then the difference between honor and conquest was nowhere near as abysmal as it is now.
In Wrath there was gear locked behind rating but it was only 2 pieces and a weapon, not absolutely everything.
The current system isn’t that bad for your main, since it’s always been there. Alts are almost as miserable as in Bfa though.
Yeah, definitley helps to progress gradually. It’s actually funny, I remember the exact game where I realized I was starting to play against really objective-minded, better people. I was on a Twin Peaks map and the enemy team started specifically trying to isolate me from the flag carrier instead of waste the time trying to kill me. It was so miserable, now it’s just part of the role.
At any rate I hope you hang in there and the game changes some to give people the motivation to keep playing. RBGs have really awoke a love for gaming that I haven’t experienced in a long time.
I dont understand how someone can defend that PvP gear has a artificial boost over other type of gear. I dont see those people asking for that gear having a nerf for non-PvP content either.
Gear is gear. Stats are stats. And artificial boost are unfair.
Shadowlands season 1 has participation because gear is good and no one has an unfair advantage. The most PvE guy could hop in PvP to hope to get some conquest and get a few starter ilvl 200 items. Maybe reach 1400-1600 rating to boost that gear a little and be fine.
Now imagine Shadowlands season 2 when all PvP people has an unfair boosted advantage. That same PvE guy just wont be able to reach 1600 rating because there’s barbwire on the road. He will leave PvP because there’s nothing there for them.
Shadowlands season 2 will be the same as Legion and BfA when nobody did PvP because they just cant get something out of it.
This is the worst decision Blizzard could make. Specially because they are hearing some idiots like Stoopz and company who whine about everything on PvP. They have to do PvE to get gear, or they take too long to find partners. People like this wanted PvP templates and it worked awful, damaging the game and specially PvP. This is a tailored suit for those people and will do the same to the game: damage it.
If PvP gear gets scaled up in PvP, Blizzard can make PvP gear have lower ilevels than PvE gear in PvE.
Blizzard can inflate participation numbers in any in-game activity using gear rewards. For example, they can make Shadowlands pet battles have the highest participation numbers ever by gating bis gear behind it. That doesn’t mean Shadowlands pet battles is actually better than what we had in previous expansions.
Does the PvE guy even want to be in PvP? Is he there mainly for the gear rewards? Is he getting boosted to get the whole process over with as quickly as possible?
Legion had really balanced PvP, especially in the later seasons. It was also easy to play on alts and still push rating because there weren’t big power gaps due to gear.
Weird that you use Legion and BFA as metrics for participation instead of the expansions that actually used similar systems to the ones being suggested. I’m sure that’s not because those expansions had massive PvP participation that makes SL s1 look like a BFA season, right?
This is exactly how PvP worked in its most popular seasons. If you wanted to PvP you got a PvP set, plain and simple. And if you did the bare minimum (just capping each week which was a bunch of randoms or just 10 rated 2s wins) then you had your BiS for PvP. I don’t understand your logic for this statement unless you just didn’t play during these times and are ignorant of how it was back then.
All that to really say nothing or proposing any idea at all.
1- Yeah Blizzard can downscale PvP gear in PvE. That would be stupid, just as it’s stupid to upscale it in PvP.
2- So? Of course participation is good because there’s rewards. THAT IS EXACTLY THE POINT. The problem comes when gear gives unfair advantages over PvE people, because in that way they WILL NEVER go in PvP. The goal is to make PvE player go in PvP, not exclude them.
PvP is in trouble for years now. Watch all those PvP streamer whining about how difficult is to find groups. It’s because it’s too little people doing it. And this thing just build more barriers around it.
3- Did you really ask that question? Of course the regular PvE guy is doing PvE in S1. That’s what everyone is talking about. People do PvE for the rewards in gear the same way that PvP guys go into PvP. REWARDS IS THE GAME.
Who cares why or how he’s doing it? He’s doing it. That’s the important part. Maybe he’ll like it eventually when he becomes better at it. Maybe he got boosted but then wanna get good to not having to pay. You think that PvP was better in legion or BfA when nobody participated because there was no rewards in it?
4- Yeah, very balanced but nobody participated. This is a gear based game and gear should matter in it’s fair way. That way of PvP got extincs because it was bad and nobody enjoyed it, same as nobody enjoyed the BfA system when level 100 players could kill fully geared 120 players due to scaling.
1- Ok, like what expansions? Care to explain something or give some solid idea of what are you taling about instead of drawing some draft of an argument.
2- Again, which seasons? Come on, I know you can have a better argument that some shady unidentified season in the past that nobody really know which one is it.
But my logic is solid:
If it works fine, dont change it. Season 1 is working fine: plenty of participation, good rewards, easy to understand systems, low entry barriers and no unfair advantages.
Now Blizz is touching a good working system and will result in discouraging people about PvP.
People in general don’t want equalized pvp gear. They want a chance to become equal with enemy through pvp rewards. Rated gate prevents this.
