Hello all,
I will start by saying this is my first week playing WOW. I understand i will not be good yet. I have a few questions though, regarding gearing for PvP, mainly BG's for now.
A little background information about me. I enjoy MMO's almost entirely for PvP. I have very little interest in PvE, and would definitely prefer a system that allows me to gear exclusively by doing PvP activities. I am coming from ff14 which has PvP that doesn't use gear, but has very similar battle modes ( large scale and small scale battles ) So im somewhat familiar with PvP objectives like getting the healer down first, cc ( tho i never seen a stun last as long as in wow, and not have some sort of immunity after being cc'd like twice ).
Back to the point.
I've played a few BG's and have been using the gear from the boxes... apparently that's very very bad ( For blizzards sake i will say it is confusing as hell as a new player that its not the gear you want to use, because the game acts like it is )
Now that I've had a little time to get used to the game, I've started inspecting players to see what gear they're using, and trying to research how to get it but... I'm just so lost. A lot of the gear they use costs hundreds of gold plus enchants and everything else... I don't have access to that amount of gold, and running BG's hasnt yielded a whole lot of money, so I'm wondering this:
Is there a clear, concise way to gear for PvP? Like is there some currency I'm not utilizing? Is there a specific PvP vendor for my level? I found one but it was like cataclysm lvl 60 or 80 gear. Where should i go to gear for the pvp im in right now?
Are the marks of honor( the actual coin like currency that dropped from a box once ) supposed to be what im using to gear? Because i've found one, and i need like 4-8 for each piece, which the vendor didnt have all the pieces?
Sorry for the noob post, but i figured everyone gets one. I'm just trying to Git Gud, please don't hate me.
Summary: if you have any tips on gearing up for pvp please share! Much prefer to do PvP to gear for PvP if that is possible here. If it's not, please let me know!
Thx!!!

The vendor gear you can buy for marks of honor was mostly for people at max level at the time. There is gear for lower levels at the old BG entrances in Arathi Highlands and The Barrens near Ashenvale, but that gear isn't very good compared to what you can get from dungeons or questing.
Best way to gear up for you right now is run dungeons or quest in the open world. Gearing up for the intent to do low level pvp is kind of a joke though, as soon as you get decent gear you'll out level the bracket.10/29/2018 05:38 AMPosted by RydîaWhere should i go to gear for the pvp im in right now?

Marks of honor are generally used to buy old pvp gear so you can collect the appearance for transmog.
Honestly, it's probably better to avoid bgs until you hit max level for the most part. Low level BGs right now are also full of twinks, so you're probably not going to be able to put up much of a fight since you won't be anywhere near their level of gear. The only way to get to their level of gear is if you make a twink yourself.
If you're wondering what a twink is http://wowwiki.wikia.com/wiki/Twink . They merged the xp-off and xp-on bracket in legion because there wasn't really a difference in power that expansion, then left them merged after they reverted the pvp template change in bfa.
To be honest, Blizzard doesn't pay much attention to maintaining the lower level experience; they're more focused on maintaining the current max level player base than worrying about getting new players. That said, I do have suggestions:
1. In low level battlegrounds, where "low level" means up to 110 or so, your best bet if you're uninterested in PVE is to get that very expensive heirloom gear. It costs a lot in gold, but not a lot in cash: you buy a token for something like $20, sell it on the auction house for 100,000 gold or more, and you have enough for full heirlooms for quite a while. You can be mostly competitive without enchants; the ones who pay a lot of attention to enchants are people who are "twinking", purposely avoiding advancing to maximum level to feel powerful in lower level battlegrounds. Edit: you only have to buy this gear once; it increases in power with your character level.
2. Once you get to 110, you'll get into battlegrounds where Blizzard was actually paying attention, and you can survive on drops until you reach max level. At max level, there's a "Conquest" system which provides weekly gear that will make you competitive in battlegrounds; hopefully it will continue to do so.
3. PVP gets much more fun at 120 if you're on the right server faction. Right now, that means a RP server on either faction, or for grouped or stealth PVP, Alliance on a Normal server. The reason is that world PVP gets interesting then, and world PVP when it's fun is way more fun than prearranged fights like arenas and battlegrounds.
Edit: 4. You can also buy a boost if you want to get to max level faster.

It is not possible. World of Warcraft is very PvE orientated. On release of the original game. PvP arenas and bg came much later. You must play the game, even at low levels all the best possible gear to use in PvP come from specific quests, rare Bind on equip items you can buy on ah, or from dungeons in your level bracket.
Unfortunately the leveling has been sped up. So by the time you'd even do a dungeon run and get gear to do well in your current bracket. By the time you got all the pieces you'd be in a new bracket. Being less powerful ect ect.
If you want to PvP you'll have to reach max level to get the most enjoyment.
Or Google how to twink your character, and turn your XP off. Otherwise you won't enjoy a thing and will be unsubscribed next week.

Thanks so much for the information!
I understand it's a Max level thing now. I'm not interested in twinking though.
Just want fair fights, but I know that's unrealistic at least until high level play.
Hmm buying gear with actual money is a really good suggestion and I had no idea that was a thing.
Unfortunately that takes a lot of fun out of it for me, because then I'll be fighting someone who was like me in regular gear and I won't feel good as good about the fight. But maybe if it's just to be competitive until I hit max, I can justify it.
On a side note, all those people telling me to go home and get out / git gud BOUGHT most of their gear? Is that not like really really hypocritical?
But if I understood you correctly, there IS a gearing system, you just can't access it until much later.
That's rough, but I think I understand why they would do it that way.
Thanks again for taking the time to reply. You guys really helped me :)

I'm not sure how the bind on account gear works. I'm assuming since you just got the game you have a boost.
Maybe someone else can chime in, but does he now have access to boa from his 110?
This gear in fact, is alot of what "most" everyone is wearing in low level BG's while leveling. It's powerful and stays current to your level.
Google boa gear for warlock to get you started on the pieces you'd need.

I'll look it up. Is that the heirloom armor? It's really expensive! Someone suggested buying it with actual money/tokens. Is that the way to go? Not very role playing friendly this game so far.
I wish I could gear from getting decent at pvp and winning matches

I would not feel guilty about it. Almost no one wears regular gear while leveling, except in slots where heirloom gear is not available. Most of the people leveling are not new players, but existing players leveling new characters. You can be sure they've got plenty of gold to buy the heirlooms.
There might be a few twinks who put on what looks like "regular" gear because it's slightly better than heirlooms for their level. There might be a very few new players who, like you before this thread, who haven't heard of heirlooms yet. Even with respect to the other new players, though, think of it this way: you might be beating a new player on the other team with heirlooms, but you're also helping out a new player on your own team by being gear competitive.
And boost? Where do I access that?? I'll check my battle.net account and see
The pvp gearing system is always at Max level. When an expansion passes the prior pvp season gear is put in a vendor that requires a currency to buy, which is now marks of honor.
Lower level bgs are just rough as it's a mix of new under geared and twinks that destroy you. This would be the same thing in the re release of classic wow too so it's not a late to the game problem, just that mmo experience.
The best idea is to level to Max where you'll have a constructed pvp gearing process.
You'll have a conquest cap (pvp currency) that you'll get from winning bgs, arenas or rated bgs. The choice is yours, every 500 conquest you'll unlock a new piece of pvp gear at item level 355. As you'll be late to the season you'll have a catch up cap that'll keep showing you pieces you missed out on, so if you grind your heart out with pvp you'll have a full 355 pvp set.
As for the boost, that's tied to buying bfa if you haven't. On your character screen there will be a gold token next to your character offering a boost. I don't think you should boost until you're level 80 so you get can all the basic fundamentals of the game. At 80 you'll know about near most things and the rest of the lvling would just be content that you could do, id recommend just lvling to Max if you enjoy seeing all the expansions.

Sounds like maybe I should forget about pvp until my char is max. Hmm...
I do have to refute the typical mmo experience though, in that it shouldnt be convoluted just because it's an mmo. Not being able to compete in a bracket the game recommended for me at level ten is not good design, for any game.
In contrast, pvp in ff14 is skill based instead of gear based, and you can start pvp much earlier and level until max. It also has competitive/ranked modes as well.
I understand pvp at the end should be about getting the best gear for your character... But I have no way to even compete ATM. That's really bad design.
If level 10-110 Pvp was meant for people at the end of the game, then I shouldn't be allowed to que, because right now it's a really toxic environment for someone starting out. And I doubt most are willing to ask on the forums. They will just unsubscribe. That can't be blizzards actual marketing plan that was made by adults who have at least half a brain?
Sorry if I sound frustrated. I was just looking forward to trying some fresh pvp in a new game.
I really appreciate your advice and will consider what to do next.
Thanks!

Like I said, Blizzard worries about keeping existing subscribers, not getting new ones. I'm actually surprised at how many new players I meet, but you're right, the game is very unfriendly and probably most will unsubscribe within a few months, unfortunately.
I do think that a set of heirlooms will get you what you want. XP in battlegrounds is pretty good these days.

That's what I'm debating on doing. I really had no idea how to get those so it helped when you explained it.
As far as the game being unfriendly to new players, that was unexpected. I figured I'd start on the bottom but would have a lot to work up to ( I enjoy this, and was looking forward to a bit of grind ) I just wanted to grind in pvp and def didn't expect buying gear/money to be in an mmo about getting progressively better gear. That's jarring. Very unintuitive.
For an mmo that has been around so long I figured there would be gearing systems for people with different playstyles and esp for peeps just starting out like myself.
But once you're at max it starts to make sense again.
I wish the people I met in game were as helpful as you guys have been!
We used to have templates that drastically reduced the gear gaps/gear advantage and assigned you stats so newer players and alts could jump right in. They threw that out the door though so you’ll have to pve until you get around 310 ilvl at max level to compete and earn better gear in pvp.
I've got really bad allergies so I couldn't read all of the above, my apologies since I'm sure some of this has already been covered.
a) You can get some (vaguely OK) gear from vendors while leveling, I haven't been to these locations in years so I'm hoping I'm marking them correctly:
https://imgur.com/a/SCjxuyV
Make sure to pick up the Alterac Valley trinket, it will help you back-cap so much.
b) The Defending Champion and Returning Champion heirlooms increase EXP gained in BGs by 100%.
To get the Defending Champion you'll need to win the Gurubashi Arena 13 times, it's up every three hours (server time, starting at midnight). This will be either really easy or really harrowing to get, so just be prepared and don't give up.
To get the Returning Champion you'll need to win the Darkmoon Faire arena 13 times, which is only available one week a month. It uses the same 3 hour interval, if you're dedicated you can get it in a week, but it will be a massive pain.
Getting these heirlooms will be much easier if you can get people with battle rezes to help you out. Oh, and disc priests/rogues--get enough of them and people will probably not even bother attacking your party.
Best of luck and don't let the haters get you down. And again, sorry if this was already covered.

You absolutely don't have to do any pve. 343 ilvl doing mostly random BGs except one world boss and 2 yolo wins.

You're welcome! Just out of curiosity, what are the queue times like for you as Horde? I'm leveling an alliance alt through BGs and they are usually less than five minutes or so.10/29/2018 11:05 PMPosted by RydîaThank you. :)
