PVP Catch up gearing - WOTLK Classic

Hi there,

I’ve recently got into wrath pvp pretty hard, after taking a break from DF pvp. Playing feels fun and fresh and it’s great. The main issue I have here is that grinding out the arena points takes a very long time and feels pretty bad to catch up, when other players are weeks ahead of you. I hit 2200 3 weeks ago, and haven’t played a game in that bracket since because I want to wait until I can purchase weapon. I have 2 suggestions as to what could make this process a little bit better.

  1. Allow arena point generation from all 3 brackets every week. Play games in 2s, 3s, & 5s and recieve arena points based off rating in each bracket. This encourages players to play all the brackets which I think would be overall a lot better for the game. It would of course be more you’d have to do to get the gear, but even as a mid-season alt helper this would be incredibly helpful.

  2. Make arena points work like conquest in retail mid season. Uncap it and let players get per win. Playing the game with less gear knowing all you can do is wait until tuesday to buy once piece just to wait another 2 weeks before you get another piece feels bad. Uncapping the arena points would make the game much more alt friendly and allow players to be much closer to playing on an even playing field.

Thank you for reading, do you have any other suggestions?

Not making honor gear and current season PvP gear a 38ilvl gap would be a great start

Changes to the game have resulted in only negatives for PvP players.
TBCC Arena and WotLKC Arena systems, length, and rule sets are prime examples.

Sitting on rating once a player obtains it, waiting to buy certain pieces of gear; should be punished. Behaving this way is a player decision that doesn’t need to happen.

Obtaining the required gear rating isn’t a problem for PvP focused players. Play whatever bracket you want and play whatever comps you wish. Have fun.

Once a PvP player earns enough Arena Points, they’ll be able to obtain or already be well above the piece of gears required rating.

Focus on positioning, situational awareness, communication with your team, and cooldown management. A few pieces of gear that aren’t BiS isn’t what is stopping any player from playing well.

In my opinion two things should happen:

  1. PVP set gear prior to current season’s should all cost varying amounts of honor instead of arena points
  2. Arena wins (or even just games) should award honor per game like BGs. It would give people a reason to spam queues

I agree with you that achieving a rating to just sit the rating is bad. It’s bad for the game and it’s bad for the player. But the way the system is currently designed sort of forces it, because worst case you tank under and now you can’t get your massive upgrade. One of the best things about wotlk is the fact that every time you get a gear upgrade you can tell, because your character will be much stronger. This is especially true for pvp. Unfortunately, it’s not simply about having the best set ups and positioning because if I have 200 less resil than I should because i’m stuck wearing naxx weapons it becomes much harder to not just die into double rogue/ tsg/ ect. There is a MASSIVE difference between wearing full hateful tier pieces vs Furious. And there isn’t even an option for a hateful wep.

I agree completely, being able to get at least full deadly from honor would be significantly better. Playing 2 gear sets behind on a fresh character makes no sense because no one is spending their arena points for sub optimal gear so no one should buy deadly as is

Agreed, or just make that higher gear faster to obtain. I think it’s okay to start low, but there’s no reason to time gate 3-4 weeks for a weapon. If you’re a hunter it’s double that, so it’s not great lol

Since wotlkc isnt wotlk og i think this would also be a REALLY good change. Old arena systems are terrible i.e why they got rid of teams in the re release of wotlk and plenty more other changes. If they implemented arena point catch up like in retail it is only healthy and positive for everyone! I think the least they could do is make previous season* bis attainable via honor (deadly 5 set+weapons) then next season have furious etc

Had to take a second look then realized all the meta pvpers are just playing identical fem humans lol

yeah I really want to play PvP but… bro it’s really hard. I’m starting late this season on my priest who barely had decent pvp gear last season. There is an understanding as a new character that your life is going to be pretty bad for a few weeks. PvP won’t be fun, it’s a grind to get to a point where you can start to have fun.

I want to level more characters and play more classes, more comps, more specs - I want to paly more of the game. Right now I’m leveling a paladin and all I can think about is how garbage PvP is going to feel for probably a month straight before I get any kind of gear that helps. But even then, I’m not good enough of a PvPer to overcome the gear disadvantage. I never played a paladin before, idk wtf I’m doing. On top of that, I’m not going to have ANY gear at all. I’ll get farmed in BG’s while everyone complains about how bad the group is for losing.

I’ll get my 0-10 5’s games in for points (If I’m lucky enough to even find people) and maybe after about a month of grinding on my new toon, I can start looking for real comps to play with real people. It’s a miserable experience and just thinking about it, I hopped off my toon (lvl 77) and idk if I’ll even finish it.

I want to level my lock for pvp. I want to play priest, my hunter, my rogue - but I don’t have the time or mental fortitude to sit thru the suck.

Here’s my carebear suggestions:

  1. honor should be account bound. If I spend the time grinding out bg’s on my main who has gear and is able to compete in fights, why can’t I just buy gear for my alts? Blizzard, would you REALLY rather I join a BG on my fresh 80 paladin in heirloom gear and greens doing 0 damage, 0 healing? I’m literally griefing my team. When I’m in the mood to heal on my priest, I won’t be punished for not playing my pally just to get him honor. This is just a win/win for everyone involved.
  2. When queueing for arenas, everyone should be given a baseline set of gear. Why would you expect people to play arena when they don’t feel like they have a chance to even compete? It doesn’t need to be BIS, but at least a full set of previous season arena gear. Most pvp BIS typically has a few raiding items anyway. If I hit level 80 today, my paladin should be given full deadly set and offset + weapons for arena’s only. That way, I can at least try to build gear in the primary content rather than the “Yolo for point’s” for a month or 2.

IMO both of these changes would be awesome for PvP. More people feeling like it’s accessible to them regardless of when they hit level 80. Incentivize more alts, which means more teams, which means more comps, more diversity, more fun. You’re still incentivized to get the better gear to replace the welfare epics. You can test out classes/specs before committing a month+ of grinding. I think that would help allow people to be more exploratory with different comps or ideas. It would incentivize more geared players in BG’s so they could farm for their alts. I know people who are already geared that enjoy BG’s but don’t do it as often because they’re already honor capped, and there isn’t anything to gain, so “Might as well grind on the alt and semi-AFK AV since I can’t actually PvP until I get gear”

I’m happy to see a post like this because it just blows my mind how much better PvP in WOTLK could be for everyone with just a few minor changes. But I’m also biased so maybe there are issues with this that I’m just over looking. I’d be curious what that might be though.

Imagine how bad it must feel to spend your hard earned arena points on gear that is objectively dogwater and totally outdated

Yeah that’s peak game design right there

Agree. It’s tough out there. If you really want to be a competitive PVPer you basically have to no life the entire season… missing one cap can put you behind on everything. Much of WOWs player base is older now and we don’t have the same amount of time to grind as we used to. However, we still want to enjoy the fun and nostalgic moments of the past. A catch up system implemented half way through the season whatever it may be.

  1. Deadly obtained by honor
  2. More arena points per week / arena per win
  3. Account wide honor
  4. Arena point BOA tokens to send to alts if you’re maxed on points On your main

I mean just one of those implemented would be a huge help.

All of this requires developer attention

Couldn’t agree more

lol true point

See everyone who actually plays the game and actually plays arena would 100% be down for this and it would be so positive and healthy for classic wow. But stuff like this will prolly never happen bc 99% of the playerbase that does not even compete or even enjoy the ability to pvp would agree with it. I feel like most of retails arena/pvp oriented changes would work so well for classic

SL tried that with conquest and it kind of worked out kind of nice.

This mmo has people with picky needs. Its how this genre goes lol.

This let you have the conqueror main at least gear up the alt. the points were earned. And then just given to the alt.

As by mid season lfg visits you could be seeing higher gear requirements for RBG, and rated arena.

And it had no real impact on the on the non rated players. IF wanting that…go rated. I personally stayed non rated but was happy the rated had this option.

I think it’s pointless to rating gate any piece that drops in VOA

Low rated 5s, like 1600 or 1700, gives 1500 points a week & doesnt scale much higher than that. Focus on rating in 2s/3s, points from 5s, you get a piece every other week its not bad imo.

Gear is holding no one back. 2400+ players hoping on an alt in full hateful still get 2.2k etc its an information game the gear isnt holding anyone back to be truthful.

If youre fresh character coming in the middle of the season you wont be on gear parody till the next season begins. This doesnt limit your potential by as much as you feel it does, but it definitely doesnt feel good/fun so I think some change to keep the upgrade dopamine flowing wouldnt be a bad thing as long as it’s not redundantly easy to gear in pvp.
