I won’t fault them for trying new things with the UI and Aesthetics, but Silver Dragon border art going away in place of the little skull orb thingy is just sad. It’s been an iconic part of the game for most of its life, the happy chemicals in peoples’ brains kick in when they see that dragon.
I’ve loved pretty much every other UI update thus far (still not sold on the health plates) but this one I’m just shaking my head at. It just kinda feels backwards that Elites, the more commonly encountered type, will keep their gold dragon border, but the Rares (which aren’t necessarily as dangerous as Elites) get the skull orb as a warning, skull indicates danger, not rareness, such as PCs/NPCs significantly higher level than you having their level obscured with the skull.
I’m not saying switch and get rid of Elite’s Golden Dragon, but perhaps have the nameless ones just having the skull orb (aka this enemy is dangerous) and the named ones/bosses keeping the Golden Dragon?
ETA: they stated they’re doing it so it syncs up with the minimap icon, but again, that could be solved with a little silver dragon icon on the map, a skull doesn’t denote rare/event/treasure, it tells people “WARNING: DANGER”.
And before anyone posts, no one cares that you haven’t seen the art in years because of whatever addons you use.
nods nods Like I said I’m cool and ecstatic with them trying new things and experimenting, but with the acknowledgement that that doesn’t always end well. This is that case. Keep playing around with and tweaking stuff, sure, but this is a flat out negative change that will make pretty much everyone go “Wha? Awwwww.”
The ONLY thing wrong with the “Silver Dragon” was that it was so small, that for years I thought it was just a silver/gold outline. The fact it’s an underweight dragon took a second-take.
I hate the UI changes in general…the icon in the bag slots is too visible to me too. Every time I e changed my UI to something else I always changed it back. The silver dragon asset removed for a tiny icon instead feels like a downgrade it will be missed
Honestly? Its such a small thing I don’t think its the worst thing in the world . . . then again maybe now folks will be confused by the lack of a silver dragon and NOT kill rare tameables right off the bat . . .
Having not played beta I will say retail base UI modification falls short compared to SWTOR. Not by much, but I hope blizz is making so many “minor” changes so that eventually there comes a day where the base UI kit doesn’t require so many addons to personalize properly. I love the stories of how they hired part of their current core crew because of the projects they did for the game out of love for the integrity of the game, its story, and its future.
The silver dragon is like a doorknob. You see it and you subconsciously know that what you’re fighting is a rare mob. This change is like redesigning that doorknob into a square hunk off wood. The first time you encounter this doorknob the shape of it is going to throw you off. And when it comes to rare mobs who die in milliseconds this is not a good change in the slightest. I’ve uninstalled addons because they messed with this unit frame. And ironically now I will have to download one to bring it back. And all because some moron in the art department couldn’t just change that new UI element to silver. Seriously Blizzard it’s like a 5 minute fix. You could toss a bag of peanuts to an intern and knock it out in a couple of minutes.
I remember Warlords of Draenor’s launch back in 2014. The first expansion where the silver dragon was used to designate mobs that weren’t rare, because they respawned fairly quickly, but rather mobs that always dropped a set piece of loot and could only be killed once before they lost the rare silver dragon icon and became normal monsters.
And as soon as Blizzard did this, the complaints started rolling in:
“Reeeh, reeeeeh! These mobs aren’t RARE!! The silver dragon used to mean a rare mob! Don’t put the silver dragon on this trash! Reeeeh!!”
And every expansion since WoD saw the same complaints. Legion, BFA and Shadowlands, those complaints popped up, with people having a whine about how rare mobs weren’t rare and that the silver dragon shouldn’t be used on them.
Well, Blizzard finally listened, now the silver dragon is gone, because the mobs aren’t rare anymore. And what’s this? Now complaints are popping up and let me check my notes here for a sec…
No. Any why limit yourself to just one insult? You should REALLY pile on the insults, it just doesn’t feel like you’re really trying. Like I don’t really feel bad, and wasn’t that the goal of your post?
Would it calm your insecure nerves if I told I, also, could tell it was a dragon… once I actually bothered to look at it?
My point was never that it doesn’t look like a dragon (scroll up-- I never said that), but that it’s too subtle.
Is it because you are illiterate that you had to call me blind? What’s the end goal here? Is it just so simple that you’re just trying to be snarky? Is that all this is?
Sure. But stupid new things make me scratch my head and wonder if the silver’s mis gendered a Dev, or some other nonsense. Quit “fixing” things that are not broken.
And while we are at it, put rare drops back on rare mobs. So many rare’s in SL dropped nothing worth having, and consequently, no one bothers to kill them. Early on when some of them require a group, there is no one interested, because they only drop anima…
