you get sniffles, coughs, burps, kids screaming, pet screaming, wife screaming, mom screaming and then you get the awkward silences and the “so whats everyone up to”

(What I’m probably doing in voicechat)
And people complain I have them on mute after I repeatedly told them the noise was annoying af. Sorry, you had several chances, now I just don’t want to deal with you anymore.
Actually I take this back. I have a better story even.
Myself and two friends used to sit in our guild vent and just chill while we did various things in the game. The three of us did this all the time for probably months before this happened.
One night we’re all doing our thing and one of my two friend’s mics suddenly goes hot and I kid you not he is just belting out the lyrics to Ne-yo’s “Sexy Love”
Myself and the other friend are in a group at the time questing and we just stop and listen for a good 30 seconds before saying something.
Guy did not say anything for the rest of the night and after that we barely ever saw him in vent again.
Yeah in my more consistent groups, there are definitely some people I mute.
The people who die in the first 5 seconds and spend the whole fight explaining how it wasn’t their fault … no one cares… we are trying to kill the boss without you
I am female and burp as loud as possible in calls.
But was he on key?
He really wasn’t bad at all. Kinda killed it actually.
Most of my disruption is from singing. I would key up for that anyhow.
If I am feeling punchy, sure, maybe My mic is ‘accidently’ too close to my nose and a breathe like a dog for a while. it happens.
No time, gotta practice belching out the English alphabet while my extended family is over having an impromptu party.
Agree but you know sometimes its hilarious when someone doesn’t have PTT on. One of our mages once got into a hilarious argument with his wife that we were all privy to and teased him about for YEARS lol.
Nah. Open Mics are better for actual conversations. People talk. People react to things. PTT cuts some of that out and its a lot more sterile overall.
If you want to run that way for Raid Prog or whatever, I get it, but I prefer not doing that, and for everything else, no way in hell I’m using PTT.
That said, I don’t have background noise. Between my mic’s software and Discord’s sound gating, my fan(s) and keyboard sounds don’t pick up, and that’s just about the only background noise around me.
If for some reason someone is around and they come in to talk, I actively mute the mic at that point. Why be mute by default when I can just mute if something comes up?
Burps and whatever are natural. If you were in person you’d hear them too. It’s not like they’re actively doing it to spite you.
Now, chewing into the mic? No. Gross. If you have a mic that’s in your mouth (like most gaming headsets) and can’t get it set up to not pick that sound up, then you mute while you eat and then unmute.
Basically what I’m saying is hot mic is totally fine and frankly preferrable so long as people are aware of what background noise they generate and can manage it to not get picked up.
Obviously if people have a lot of unmitigated background noise and don’t care or otherwise can’t prevent it from being picked up, it’s obnoxious and they should probably use PTT.
But at that point it’s less of an issue with hot mic and more of an issue with the individual.
people with 0 self-awareness…
this is one of the reasons why I dont want to be on a call with in game ppl anymore
if Im not the leader of the group, I just stay muted until I have something important to say or they need me for something
People use the in game voice chat system?
You should push to talk in every game, and especially in video conferences.
Sexist nonsense has no place here
That one got a laugh out of me. I have actually asked people where tf they are playing because the background noise is wild.
I guess I’ve been using push to talk for so long that it feels perfectly natural to me. My thumb is as quick as my diaphragm when I have something to say.
Perhaps you really are a unicorn. The odds aren’t in your favor, but its possible. Its also possible you’re one of those people everyone else in this thread is talking about.
