Ok so this is a PSA to all people that engage in activities that use voice chat. Regardless if that activity is raiding, high end pvp, or M+, please enable push to talk. Please.
The people in your group are too polite to tell you this, so allow me. If you use an open mic or a voice activated mic the people in your group are tired of listening to you sneeze, burp, chew, drink, or whatever other bodily function you have going on at the time. They are tired of hearing the TV or radio you have in the background drowning out important calls. They are tired of listening to you Darth Vader breath into the mic like you’re a phone seggs operator.
Now I do admit I have been witness to some comedy. The spouses or parents going nuclear can be pretty hilarious. The stories from kids or roommates can be pretty epic, too. Unfortunately, the good does not outweigh the bad.
Please understand that I’m telling you this as your friend and not to be mean, but if you don’t use push to talk then your group probably hates you.
Its super easy. Just turn it on and decide what key you want to bind it to. I have it bound to my left alt key and use the same thumb that I use for jumping. I’ve never had to do both at the same time. I know many bind it to the tilde key (~) so its intentionally out of the way so they don’t fat finger it. Whatever key you want. The choice is yours.
So please- for the love of your group. For the love of all groups. For the love of gaming in general. Please use push to talk.
Years ago I had set my push-to-talk key to something I was also using in my keybinds. I joined a PUG transmog raid and kept causing a clicking sound on voice chat as I used my keybind for a frequently used ability and it was driving everyone else on the raid crazy. I got yelled at when they figured out who it was.
Our discord raid channel isbset to default to PTT except raid leaders. If the discord you are using isn’t set to that , maybe you should address that.
Every other channel , it’s users choice. And you can also mute the offending party. I have 3 regulars that i mute often
so I have a really messed up computer - it dc’s me constantly.
I don’t know why and haven’t had a chance to troubleshoot it thouroughly
so my work around is to play wow on my laptop, but my laptop can’t play wow and run discord.
so I’ve got discord running on my pc, wow running on my computer, and I have voice activation set.
it’s awful. I’m constantly self conscious over what noises might be being picked up by my mic.
I was playing a long session with a leveling buddy one time and I was so used to pushing the push-to-talk button and chatting with them that when someone in my house asked me a question, I reflexively pressed the push-to-talk button and proceeded to yell my answer to my family member.
After a few seconds I realized what I had done and apologized for killing my leveling buddy’s ears.
I really hate when people have open mics on Discord.
As someone who has pugged ALOT - there are usually one or two Raid leads in every group who have something important to say… and then 5 people with open mics who have absolutely nothing of value to add.
I can understand a Raid Leader with an open mic, because stuff happens on the fly.
Other than that…. Maybe your lame joke in the middle of an explanation can wait?
I guess I join these Discords as a pug to Raid, and they are made up of “friend groups” - but they are usually the same.
One or two people have something of value to say about the raid - and 5 other useless people with open mics who can’t be quiet.
I once got into a raid where someone was arguing with the 1 person in their twitch chat with a hot mic while the raid leader was giving instructions.
I felt like I was in one of those movies where they hyperbolize modern culture where everyone is trying to live stream their life like they are even remotely interesting.
It was like the reverse Truman show, where someone that nobody wants to watch is trying to be entertaining for a TV show that nobody wants to exist.
Back in 'nilla we were forming a raid and the raid lead had either messed with or reset his voice settings. Suddenly we all hear loud bubbling followed by a violent coughing fit.
That was the last time I remember finding a hot mic moment funny though. OP is right. Push to talk is love. Push to talk is life.
