I read op’s lengthy post as a sad reminder just how entitled current wow players are for this having to be stated. Back in Burning crusades this was wow at its core, you lvled threw a zone and once you where high enough you moved on to the next zone, Doing as many quests as possible was the best reward as you got more abundant gear upgrades too. Past few expansions people just train role threw the main questlines and miss out on like 50% of world questing experience. I’ve found doing side quests often entertains me more than main quests as they almost always have funny stories and characters associated with them. People should want to experience all that a zone has to offer before moving on so stuff like this shouldnt be upsetting at all.
This post is so helpful, a lot of us players appreciate information like this - thank you! I had already planned to do every quest that’s available to me as soon as I can get it. However there are a lot of players who just want to do the bare minimum to hit cap. I have a good feeling my brother and I will be just fine if we follow through with our completionist approach to the quest experience in Shadowlands.
So to summarize: The expected first-time path is Bastion to 53, Maldraxxus to 55, Ardenweald to 57, and cap out in Revendreth.
Do I have that about right?
Does PvP help?
Can you use the experience potions from BFA?
Are weapons tokens from quest rewards also orare the quest rewards set drops?
Is the main story campaign line that is separated in your log counted towards the 25 limit in your log? If so has the limit been raised/lifted?
This has been EYE-OPENING. I usually do some side quests, the dungeon only if there are quests and to see it if its a new expansion, but just level and go when the storyline takes me there…its interesting they’re literally forcing us through the first run through; remember in Mists when one of the staples was you DIDN’T have restrictions? When you literally could start any zone, quest through any zone to level? I remember it was a HUGE focusing point for MISTS. Haha.
Anyway, this was amazing. Thank you for this. It needs to be pinned.
MODERATORS: PIN THIS FOR THE GOOD OF ALL!!!
Cool, so like Vanilla
This is such a wonderfully comprised, thoughtful thread. I appreciate it a lot. I’m preparing to go all-in in SL and want to do things as smoothly as possible, and if I hadn’t read this thread I know without a doubt I’d be one of those people only focusing on the campaign quests and then sitting around at an empty quest hub in confusion going, “Is this a bug? Where are my quests?”
i remember being able to go do orange quests if you felt like it, which was way more fun. now they’re just completely unavailable until you hit X level.
Nah vanilla you’d do side quests and dungeons and you’d STILL cap at 53…you then have to go to Goldshire and kill 65,340,285 boars.
oh wow, now I have completely lost interest. I was trying to avoid spoilers so I haven’t read or engaged in anything related to SL, thanks for the heads up.
Fantastic post and information.

They need to delay it later than the last one.
It is SAD, I was planning to do only the campaign quests in the first time to not do the same thing over and over again with the alts.
I get that everyone has their own thing they do to level, but I grab every quest I see when I see them and explore every zone tip to toe, so I expect I will level slower than everyone else, and shouldn’t have much problem with level breaks. I do feel sorry for people who like to level through dungeon grinding or PvP though. Sounds like they’ll have to then go back and do the whole story after level cap to unlock the covenant system…
Thanks for the heads up! You’re awesome!
A lot of people do, I use a different one though because AAP looks like trash, if it had a better UI i’d use it.
They FF14’d Shadowlands?
People aren’t kidding when they say Blizzard takes ideas that work in MMOs
I know there’s a lot of FFXIV trashing around, but I gotta say, when I played it, I never had to do any kind of grinding while leveling. None. You thinking of before ARR maybe?
Them’s were bragging rights…’Yo lads I’m soloing orange quests’
Almost sounds like they copied FF14.
Skull for the skull throne!
