So I choice to go Prot Pally, I know we are gimped in a couple of key ways, and there are certain bosses we cant tank in MC due to mechanics. What i am looking for is some additional advice on what gear holes I need to fill. I cant find a ton of info for Prot Pallies (and I understand why). Not sure if you can look up characters online for classic like you can with retail but my toons name is Shinarri on Myzrael. Thanks ahead of time for any advice, or laughter depending on what you see.
changed to the character so it shoudl show in the post now.
Is no Classic armoury so we cant inspect you anyway.
I’ve found a few of the class discords to be helpful.
They are listed here:
For gear, abilities, basics, etc there is usually a pinned list (I have not been in pally discord). You can dive in with questions that those don’t clear up.
Honestly, I think the biggest issues with prot paladins in vanilla is simply they compete with casters for so much excellent “caster” gear. Same with Hpallies.
Hpally is focused on critting like mad, thus their best heal weapons are the ones with crit.
Prot pallies want spell damage, so they want stuff like choker of the firelord which guilds are reluctant to give a protadin. Hell, most won’t even give it to a healer despite it being a BIS item.
Nearly every guild is trying to min/max to some degree. It sucks, but it is what it is.
the pinnacle of prot paladin is pretending to tank 20 mans
As a Protection Paladin, or any tank, out job is to generate threat. Personally I’ve found the easiest and most mana efficient way to do this, is to let the gear do my work for me.
All damage done raises threat on a 1:1 basis. 100 damage = 100 threat. So I went the passive damage route. My gear choices are based on hurting the enemy when they strike me. This is not a good plan for raids but excellent for late game dungeons such as Scholomance and Stratholm.
Skullflame shield w/thorium shield spikes, naglering, consecrate, blessing of sanctuary, retribution aura, thorns ( Druid buff), and immolation potions are all great for generating threat passively.
Throwing the “Fiery Blaze” enchant on your weapon makes it a AoE threat weapon. This enchant is a once per character quest reward for level 40+ characters in the Badlands. Very easy to complete, this enchant can be cast on other characters weapons using the trade window.
As far as raids go, I often fill the role of auxiliary tank. If the MT or OT go down I step up if I’m able, otherwise I help control adds.
LMAO!!! Complaining about the choker when you get a blue necklace that’s 1HP off from something mages have no reasonable alternative for.
LMAO!!! Quoting something out of context simply to troll the wow forums when you could have just realized I was pointing out some of the things that are parts of wow.
There was no complaint. Just a statement. Grow up.
I don’t know talent build.
In phase 1 to 2 you will want high defs 400 and some spell damage. For lack armor mitigation.
Phase 3 more spell dmg and 340 to 350 defs.
That’s with T2. Reason you get more armor and you want critted. Gives a 30% block for 5.
That make sense, with Quel’serrear my defense is hitting 429 whenit procs, Im using the complete deathbone set from scholo. I focused stam and defense. then used spell power enchant and spell power on heads and legs, block on shield then stats, stam, strength or agility (in that order everyplace else). Running 10.2 dodge, 14.6 parry, 13.6 Block (+30 from holy shield when UP). I cant think of anythign else to tweak at this stage. I use flask of supreme power and greater arcan elixir so run a little over 200 spell power raid buffed, and use a sharpening stone. Trying to maximize spell damage and white damage to get max threat per hit, then using naglering ring, blessing of sanctuary and holy shield to generate more threat everytime I get hit/ block.
Spell damage > +healing any day of the week. Give me the choice between two items with equal healing or spell damage and I’m taking the spell damage one on my healer.
+healing is a useless stat outside 2 hours a week during raid.
He was just trying to justify being a troll and jumping on what I said out of context. He’s not actually interested in discussing paladins why they are/not weak.
Your entire post. I’ll reiterate, you are taking a jab at guilds favoring their own progression, as opposed to out of raid benefits for healers.
There is no jab. The closest thing to being even mildly offensive is me saying “it sucks but is what it is” at the end.
Apparently discussion with context is jabbing. GG.
Quick question, does it work without the flask?
In my mind, if I HAD to flask to make something work, it isn’t worth the cost. So, I’m wondering if it works for you without the flask, and you’re just flasking to make it better.
It works without the flask, Normally I run with the spell power enchant, greater arcane elixer and hit just shy of 100 spellpower, and as long as dps is patient to let me build threat I dont have any problems. I just started using the flask to make trash pulls easier, and to generate more threat faster so dps can jump in sooner. It allows us to move through MC a little quicker when chain pulling. It also makes me more mana efficient, I have to judge less, and get a little more threat out of the rank 1 consecrate/ seal of righteousness
This sounds like a crazy expensive way to go. I hope the guild is helping supply some of this?
Its costly, for sure, but without a taunt and not being able to stack spell power, defense and stam because of bad prot pally itemzation in classic its the game you have to play. Cost wise though, its really not as bad as it sounds, flasks last for 2 hours, my guild is clearing MC in 2-3 hours. I support healers during the rag fight because of what he does to random mana users. So the flask isnt supper critical there. The real expensive part consumables wise is the mana potions. I go thorugh 15-20 greater and superior and 1-3 major per raid. Thats where I actually get hit cost wise.
Shield spike is irrelevant for prot pallies as only Holy dmg has the threat generation of righteous fury. Better off getting the 2% block enchant.
I Went prot pally with basically all Warrior gear. Mana was a bit hard but if you are really good with using your mana seal when you have good threat, you can stay topped off. Also consumes help.
Tanking as a pally is extremely fun, just have to work at it to get the hang of.
Pro tip: Farm the geomancers in the Human starting area for fireball candles. Long range great for pulling.
