Prot Pallies in Classic

In phase 3 you get more spell damage and you can lower your defs to 350.

When your armor mitigation goes up from T2.

Then every time you get crit you get 30% additional block for 5 blocks.

I recommend keep all your defs gear for swapping out different gear.

Thats good to know about the Geomancers, I kept the boomerang from ungoro for ranged pulls. I was looking at the tier 2 pieces and was tempted by their stats, mana regen and spell damage, but was concerned about loosing defense. I didnt notice, where you get more blocks from crits. Is that a set bonus, ill look it over again if thats the case.

Nah hes talking about Redoubt, when YOU get hit by a crit. Which is a bad thing lol.

Isn’t righteous fury and greater blessing of Kings the highest threat generator in game? I think the issue is getting enough defense to tank so you don’t constantly get crushing blows. Warriors can stack that type of defense and they can smooth incoming damage with shield block.

Your correct on Bok/Righteous Fury is an awesome threat generator, if you have enough of a single class in the raid. And I use it as my version of a taunt regular, it can just be mana intensive to spam that

What does BOK do for threat in Vanilla? Is it just cause the overall stat boost? Or did it do something different?

Well it gets modified by righteous fury so each casting of it generates 30% more threat compounded by the number of people it hits. So for our guild we have anywhere from 5-8 warriors or pallies in most raids. Casting on either of those two classes can generate something like 114 tps per person it hits. Since this isnt a taunt, its actual threat generation it can bypass taunt resistant mobs. But in my experience so far it can be finicky as heck.

My Classic human Paladin is sitting at level 33. I decided that I can’t endure/play a Paladin without the /waggle raising my spirits, so I’m waiting for TBC to play one.

Yeah Ill be the first to admit I choose prot pally because everyone said it couldn’t be done in vanilla/ classic and I wanted a challenge. Its doable, but has strict gear requirements, talent requirements and can be pretty costly due to mana pot costs. If the continue with classic burning crusade servers most of our issues get fixed then. So looking forward to that.

Big issue in vanilla is the lack of mana back on being healed. its like having a warrior who starts at full rage but doesn’t get it when he’s hit.

Oh my sweet sweet summer child.

Haha. He has a point though-- Not ALL the issues get fixed, but pallies get a legitimate role as sidekick tanks to the warrior’s maintanking. The warriors handle the big guy, the paladin pulls up the little guys (And, while still slightly worse than a warrior, CAN main tank most of the fights if the raid is cool with them).

Warriors are still at slightly superior, but you can’t deny that paladins got a MASSIVE upgrade in BC in tanking; Even got a final raid boss they were superior in at karazahn with prince malchazar and his dual wielding. (final as in end of the raid, not “final of the expansion”)

Heck, druids got a big help too in that in BC they were the better Second tank to have on a single target boss without adds, like gruul, since they could avoid being rage starved without being the primary target.

If you are going to flask why not use distilled wisdom so you get way more BoKs out?

bro as a prot paladin main who has maintanked all the content so far

I really hope you are aware of the fact that greater blessings generate more threat than all of your holy damage abilities combined
its not even close. You can see me tanking ony by doing this here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wjyY2Z1OWo . Since you dont need any sp for this, you can actually just stack defensive stats. With the right gear, you can become uncrittable and uncrushable with holy shield up by phase 4, which will make you incredibly tanky.

Thats basically what i did with my set. Spell power builds are good for dungeons though.

I side with the gnome only a bad healer would want the neck off rag since the strat one is easy to farm and only -1 healing.

That’s a lie, Paladins also couldn’t tank in BC.

If by “certain bosses” you mean “all bosses unless you want to gimp your entire raid and make 39 people hate you” then yes. Just roll a warrior if you want to tank raids.

That wasn’t the point of the post.

The main problem with Paladin tanks cannot be changed. They require mana and thus and an finite amount of threat.
