Professions too complex

I’ve read guides, watched videos and tried navigating in game.
I don’t really underatand it.

Is there like a “dummies guide”?

I missed DF completely and can’t wrap my mind around the whole profession rework.

Maybe there’s a good video guide i missed?

I generally don’t watch video guides, but here’s the guide I go to whenever I’m stuck on a profession:

It’s been very helpful.

I’d say that they’re convoluted.

Is there a specific aspect bothering you?

At their base, they work the same. You get a recipe. You get the materials. You hit combine.

You can further level up your professions with the specialization points. Eventually you fill it out completely.

You can use different quality mats for different quality end result.

Thats basically it.

If you have specific questions, such as “what does resourcefulness do” or “how do you know when you have enough skill” etc please feel free to ask in the professions forum.

The dummies guide is don’t mess up or you’ll need to redo it on an alt. But you do technically get 1 do over I think…

But yes it is a bit overly complicated in my view.

Check out Manthieus he’s pretty good:

start crafting, eventually you’ll get everything. don’t worry about anything else.

also get an addon called Craftsim.

i just found an item trade seemed to ask for a lot and maxed it out. the rest was simple.

Hopefully they’ll simplify Professions in the next expansion.

Thought Simulationcraft had to do with DPS #'s

Man, the revamp of professions really confused me at first. During Dragonflight I skipped them until the end. I resolved to do better for The War Within.

By the time I got Algari Master of All, I think I got the hang of it….

That Signs of Kelani guy made some professions videos that were simple enough that even I was able to get the hang of it.

Watching his videos really helped me understand what the heck to do.

It’s not that it’s too complex but it’s complex enough that it requires significant time to evaluate choices for priorities. There’s details that make it harder to pick up on and simply grind though, I guess it becomes confusing so maybe you right actually.

Are you starting leatherworking and skinning, based on your spec? I started LW on this alt about six weeks ago and just stay focused on my goals. Fill out parts of tree that help my gearing, pick up extra kp points where I can.

It hasn’t been too much of a slog. Skinning takes care of itself. Kill things and skin them, put points that help u gather more or better quality skins.

Start with the green profession tools as you build acuity, then move to blue tools.

profession tools? I have herb/alch on this toon, but sounds like you are referring to something other than a mining pick or skinning knife

When you open your professions panel, you will see three empty slots for tools that help you gather or boost your crafting skill level. If you go to the AH and look under profession tools, you’ll see what they are for your chosen profession.

The ones in the AH are greens, which then get switched for blue tools that you get crafted with acuity. Don’t worry about the blue tools yet. Look in the AH for the greens and filter by expansion; the drop down menu on the left will get you started.

Herbalism and Alchemy same advice as Skinning/LW. The gathering profs are easy enough. Alchemy when you start has a lot of ‘discovery’ of potions that need to be done. I believe this phases is timegated, you can only discover a few new recipes at a time. Sorry it’s been a year since I leveled alchemy.

Tbh I wouldn’t chose that as my primary prof this late in the xpac, it’s not my favorite, but do your thing.

Blizzard hasn’t shown us they could do simple yet.

It’s just Blizzard doing Blizzard things. Taking a good idea and adding layers of complication until it becomes a disaster.

I just dropped my crafting professions and picked up herbalism/ mining. I’m a lot happier for it. Crafting professions seem to make you lose gold unless youre on the cutting edge of crafting and some sort of AH metagaming savant.

Oh, I agree wholeheartedly. In fact, I made a thread about this very topic.

I still think the new version is extremely convoluted. Anytime you need four different types of materials with three different crafting qualities spread over three different profession trees in a talent tree each having five different options and now asking for one profession tool and two add-ons just to maximize your efforts is ridiculous. I miss standing still in the city and just crafting. They didn’t have to redo the entire system they could have just made game crafting more usable, sellable, and worth the effort. Peoples biggest complaint was that after crafting everything it was either BOP or just not worth it. So instead of making it BOE and absolutely worth it They changed the entire system into this big Frankenstein convolution they have right now.
