Profane Names

I want to preface this with a few things:

  1. I’ve been playing this game since Vanilla release. I know the rules on name and shame (so I can’t be as specific here as I’d like to be).

  2. I also know that Blizzard won’t discuss disciplinary action against other players.

However, if you friend someone and then report their name, you can easily see if action was taken.

I reported a name this week that is rough slang for “have intercourse with your mother” - which is not only profane in its own right but is a deadly insult in Russian.

Nothing has happened.

I suspect I’ll have trouble even getting the meaning of the name across without censure in the forums, but this is a name, not blockable, visible to every young player in the game who encounters it.

Is the reporting system based on some popularity contest (or the reverse) or are profane names profane on one report?

That isn’t always accurate. In some situations, the person selects a name that is the same or similar to what they were reported for.

It’s also important to point out that if they have not logged in (which I assume is not the case here), the friends list will not update.

Please report the name again if it still exists.

The volume of reports from different users definitely helps us to get to the report a lot faster. If the name (not necessarily that specific character), has been reported and verified before, it tends to allow additional reports of other characters with that name to be processed faster as well.

I recorded his name as reported and put it in his notes field in the friends window. It has not changed.

He’s logged in now. He’s logged in and out several times.

I’m not given the opportunity to report his name again. The options isn’t available, much as when you first report the name.

If it’s not a violation of the rules to do so in response to a Blue request I’m perfectly willing to post it here so it can be checked both for rules violation (I can’t see how it’s not - euphemised and masked profanity are both forbidden) and for whether or not the issue is yet to be addressed.

You need to be able to click on the name in the chat line or by clicking on the character portrait. It isn’t possible through the friends list.

I have but I will attempt to do so again.

Something else to keep in mind? It’s not instantaneous. It could be that they haven’t gotten to your report just yet. Ticket times are a little high right now. I don’t think it out of the question that these reports too are moving a little slower than folks would like behind the scenes. The reporting system does work. We see it all of the time with people who come here raging about the unfairness and trying to justify their names.

I have seen a few times someone gets a name violation and given the free chance to pick a new name just end up picking the same name again. Guess they hope that no one will notice, Sometimes it is really only forced until like the third time. Meaning the name is changed for them and they have to send their pick of a new name as a reply to the ticket.

So just because you do not see it changed does not mean it is not in violation.

It’s been five days (I believe) since my first report. I’ve done this before, many times. It has never taken this long. I take the rules on this quite seriously - especially since names can’t be blocked without crippling game play.

The perverts and scoffrules out there who think it’s funny to put sexually explicit names on their toons need permabans, imho.

I play on Moon Guard (and WRA). Trust me, I’ve seen some names, and I would agree with you if they’re stupid enough to be that repulsive? I wouldn’t shed any tears to see them permanently gone. But with all that’s going on right now, things are moving slower than usual. It may not have taken that long before, but there are things that may be seen as a higher priority. And this fool may have just renamed it the same exact thing.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a way to tell what has happened between the time of your report to right this moment. It may have been addressed and they just kept the name. There just isn’t way of knowing. You can try and find them so you can right-click and report them via their nameplate or wait until they speak in a chat, but that’s as far as you can go.
