Private server players

Hello Superfriends!

I was running around BRD yesterday when my party started talking about private servers and it made me think…

For those of you who played on private servers boy oh boy it must feel good to feel legit in classic. No more running around on IP-stealing servers! You can feel clean and whole again in classic where you support Blizzard. Welcome home you crazy vagabonds!

Why would we have felt dirty for playing a game Blizzard abandoned?

i am a private server player we were the people that showed blizzard that there was a audience for this product. For that I am proud. Hopefully with the success of classic that still help them improve retail. That is best case scenario

I did not feel immoral while playing on private servers. It was a product that wasn’t being provided from the official source, so a backdoor way was invented.

But I do feel much better playing on blizzard servers, knowing my progress wont be invalidated by the PHRESH server meme…or a copyright takedown

I felt dirty…

…but I liked it.

I had a lot of fun playing on a TBC server about a year back. Met some great people and was one of a 3 person group running a raiding guild.

Then another TBC server opened up. Not 2 months later we were struggling to find people to fill out our 25 mans to finish our t5 push. A month after that, there were maybe 30 people on the server at a time and my t5 druid tank was rendered useless.

Knowing that these servers wont die like that is absolutely huge. It’s like a massive weight off my shoulders

Nope, never felt bad. The multi-billion dollar corporation doesn’t care about my well-being so I reciprocate in kind.

Why would I feel bad about playing the game (on Nostalrius) since Nostalrius launched, then onto Elysium, then Lights Hope?

Blizzard decided they didn’t want my money when they ruined the game with the launch of Cataclsym. I cancelled both accounts in April 2011, then proceeded to give Rito James™ ~$4,000 over 8 years.

I decided to play on Nostalrius (my first private server) because that was a way to play a version of WoW that I enjoyed. Blizzard ain’t owned nuffin’ for that. Blizzard is now getting my money again (two accounts) because they were finally shamed into providing a service that I was willing to pay for again. Semi-coincidentally, Rito James™ has ruined their game to the point where I only give them money for limited edition/legacy skins. (BRB buying Championship Ryze.)

Lol at the idea people felt bad for playing on pservers.

Actually it kinda sucks. Private servers are more mature and they don’t tolerate this participation trophy reservation crap.

Notice how private server populations are trickling back up now? People are already migrating back.

It’s showing what I feared all along. Vanilla won’t work with today’s player base. It simply won’t. Most of the people I lured back, some who haven’t played any online games since Cata, are already gone again. Most have gone back to FF14. Some have gone to CoD and console garbage. Some are returning to their private servers. I know personally Elysium’s new BC realm is looking very appealing to me right now. But they all unanimously blame one thing - toxic self-centered players. It’s the core reason why people I know have left the game.

I know blizzard developers who play on private servers. And not to point out the obvious, but you can’t reverse engineer a game like this without inside help.

Yeah and you can eventually transfer, etc. The permanence of my character progression makes it feel much better/different.

Are the private servers like the Vanilla? Is everything the same? Did they stick to the original?

I only ask because I never played on one and was wondering if there are some differences you could point out between the private servers and Blizzard Classic.

I don’t really think this is a problem with WoW though, is it? It’s an issue that plagues gaming culture as a whole.

My experience in Classic has thus far been pretty great. One or two people have been rude, and everyone else has been awesome. Quick to give advice, dive in on a mob that’s killing me, buff me, defend me from enemy players… It’s pretty much what I’ve missed about the WoW community.

Seems to me that when the game is hard enough to represent a threat, players will band together against it, and when it isn’t hard enough to represent a threat, they treat each other as being disposable.

I’ve even made a couple of battletag friends from Classic, which is pretty great.

That depends on the private server. There are some servers (“fun servers”) that have features like 2x, 3x, 10x experience gain for rapid leveling progression. There are other servers (like Nostalrius) that aimed at being as close to the original Level 60 experience as possible.

That is an excellent observation.

Well stated.

The privates I played on, were real “vanilla”, not this redone “classic” crap.

99.999% of the people on these forums never played on a private server, they represent an extreme minority of players, and out of the ones who say they did, half of them are lying, because it’s the internet.

Nostalrius is permanently down. I heard when Classic came out, he shut down all of his servers.
