Prince Renathal

Friend or Foe? I think during the campaign, he is especially the enemy of my enemy is my friend…but since the Sire is taken care of at the moment, will the Prince screw us over for his own quest for more power?

TL;DR - I don’t trust the Prince…so how will we be screwed over by him?

I think it’s unlikely. While planning to depose Denathrius, Ren’thal says his future goal is for Revendreth to be ruled by a council - even saying “no more sires” - essentially putting an end to autocratic rule. Having said that, Ren’thal seems to be okay with scheming and backstabbing from some of his unit quotes, so he’s not above underhandedness (though Deny had it coming), so he’d probably use it against anyone who threatens the council.

I think he’s a ‘friend’ but it’s also important to remember than in this expansion, the mutual benefit to ending the threat of the Jailer affects two entirely different realms. Renathal doesn’t care for us or what our world is going through. He cares about Revendreth and ensuring anima continues to flow. At the end of the day we’re working towards the same goal but he doesn’t care to help us, he’s more interested in helping himself and his people. For this reason, we’re more of a tool to him than a long term ally.

I miss the good old days. Oh, when we were just trying to destroy each other for power.

The Master hoarded anima, lied, threw me into the Maw!.. All of that I respect, but setting the Jailer free? Oh, too far.

He wouldn’t care about Denathrius transferring all the Anima to himself but the second he decided to work on setting the Jailer free Denathrius became a threat!

He doesn’t care about even Revendreth! In a World Quest he apathetically stated that he is sure that whatever was dredged up will be of use to our cause regardless of what was dredged up from the muck pools!

Now that Denathrius is dealt with all Renathal cares about is dealing with the Jailer as well and returning Revendreth to it’s noble purpose of casually backstabbing each other for power.

Him refusing to become a King means Revendreth will have more political intrigue and backstabbing where the Court of Harvesters constantly undermines itself! That will serve Renathal’s goals more than anything!

If some random member of the Court causes another Drought destroying the Shadowlands he is not going to care!

WANTED: Duke Anton and WANTED: Lord Darion had us Players kill both sides of an ongoing Conflict in Revendreth for the rewards so you can get the picture of what Renathal deems Revendreth’s noble purpose is(unlike what the Accuser deems it is)!

Revendreth’s true purpose is to cultivate Chronic Backstabbing! The fact that all Souls sent there have Virtues means the place is perfect for Villains who want to betray each other yet claim Morality unlike the Maw which when it was Torghast was an inescapable Tower with mini Barad-dûrs for Villains to fight over without concern for Morality!

Each Death Realm has been turned from their true purpose! Revendreth is no different!

Maybe it’s just because it’s my covenant, but this thread strikes me as being truly bizarre. Of course Prince Renathal is our friend - however, he is how his master made him. Renathal is absolutely devoted to the original purpose of Revendreth, however he also loves to support lost causes and make gambits that have very little chances of success. In that way, when Denathrius shaped his firstborn son, I believe he was creating something of an opponent to help sharpen his mind and entertain him with his intrigues as the long eons of eternity passed.

It’s absolutely true that Renathal plotted to betray and overthrow Denathrius before whenever suspected him of being responsible for the Anima drought. As I said, I think this was by design and intended to be pet of the Courts intrigue to serve as a distraction for the damned and entertainment for their Sire. This is backed up by the fact that, through the Medallion of Dominion, Denathrius was aware of Renathal’s every move, and was able to easily thwart his plans.

What Denathrius did not count on, however, was Renathal’s rebellion exposing his secret alliance with the Jailer at the critical moment when all their plans were coming to a head. The rebellion turned from conflict between respected master and treasured pupil, to a war that could shape the future of the Shadowlands. That’s why Denathrius condemned Renathal to the Maw and it’s also how he ultimately sowed the seeds of his own undoing.

Yes, Renathal’s chief concern is the well being of Revendreth and it’s residents. Yes, he’s more than a bit of a back stabbed and plotter. But the threat of the Jailer and the aid of the Maw Walker lends Renathal’s coup legitimacy. Renathal needs us, that makes us his very bestest friend throughout all the realms!

Through us Renathal rebuilds his armies, re-establishes the Court of Harvesters, and invites persons of power and prestige from all over the Shadowlands to indulge in the entertainment (and not so subtle politicking) of the Ember Court.

What helps the Maw Walker, ultimately helps Revendreth. Prince Renathal is devoted above all else to stopping the Jailer’s plans and undoing the corruption Denathrius has sown in his realm. Since our goals are so closely aligned, it only makes sense that we would be the best of friends. (Though perhaps not as good friends as we are with Theotar.)

Of course, as Rendle reminds us, don’t trust anything with wings or fangs. Prince Renathal and the Venthyr are our dearest friends… for now.

Nah Renathal is good.

If he was initially an enemy I doubt that he is anymore after seeing us bash down Nathria’s walls and kill everyone inside because it was Tuesday

He’s likely friend, but it makes me really uncomfortable to make that crown in the campaign; it’s too powerful to exist, and “it’s necessary” is exactly what a villain would say when creating such a powerful artifact he intends to steal. That crown is nothing but trouble, and there’s no vault in the multiverse safe enough to store it.

“My Dear Friend, The Maw-walker! I am overcome with joy that you’ve returned safely from that dreadful place. Just to be clear… we are still cool, right?”

We won’t be. There’s literally nothing that tells us he’s going to double cross us other than his voice sounds stereotypically Disney villain-esque, which is true of literally everyone in Revendreth. Renathal has done literally nothing but try to help Revendreth, and is entirely outraged over how Denathrius has harmed both it and the Shadowlands.

This is textbook judging a book by his cover.

Didn’t blizzard say not to trust the Prince?

So there will be no Eternal One for Revendreth? I believe the first ones or whoever made Shadowlands into what it is today had in mind that there would be an autocratic leader for every main region.

In this case, there has to be a Sire in Revendreth.

They don’t need a new one, the Eternal of Revendreth is still Sire Denathrius. He’s still there, just imprisoned inside his own sword. Even if Renathal were to take on the title of ‘Sire’ and wield the power of all of the medallions that would still be Denathrius’s power, not his, that he was wielding. That’s born out pretty clearly in the quest where we make the crown and Denathrius tries to control everyone who touches it.

For better or worse, Denathrius was not lying when he said he was Revendreth. The only path towards that realm being ruled by its Eternal once more is his redemption.

You have a point, I was just quoting Ren’thal. I think there will have to be a workaround. Ren’thal and Z’rali even planned to work together to purify Denathrius like they do other sin-burdened souls; maybe that’ll work.

I don’t recall them doing so, but even if they did, they’ve given us no reason to mistrust him. That could just be flavored speech given that Revendreth is a dubious realm - there’s no reason to believe that means he’ll betray us.

I find it hard to imagine that Denathrius wouldn’t have a “Get Out Of Jail Free” card up his sleeve for just this situation…He may be full of himself and arguably, rightfully so, but he is no idiot. And whatever that bodes well for Denathrius puts Renathal on the outs seeing how these two characters are opposites.

I keep thinking about that “lesson” that Denathrius was teaching Renathal when he blew wide open the anima reserves to be sucked into the Maw…I feel there is something there I am missing. :man_shrugging:

And to me, there is no lesson for Denathrius to learn so isolating him to the top of a tower will do nothing. Denathrius may have been FORCED to collude with the Jailer? I hope we get more from Denathrius in 9.1.

I don’t think we will be at all and I certainly hope we don’t. I like him and the Venthyr a lot as protagonist vampires, great contrast to San’layn, keep them affable and on our side.

the entire venthyr doesn’t have to follow the Prince if he turns heel.

Yeah but like why? He’s their most prominent character.
