do you feel people are meaner than when i remembered when we first played the game 10 or 12 years ago? I mean people are really mean in this game.
yes, the internet in general has gotten bad.
no, the internet is far more tame, you’ve just gotten softer.
I have played many MMOs WoW is probably the 2nd worst community I have experienced and significantly worse than most I have been involved with recently.
I am not 100% sure I’d say it was just the internet that has gotten bad.
Wouldnt say meaner just divided and angry at least in the us. I dont see nothing changing ever.
Why be nice when you don’t have to worry about being punched in the face for being a jerkface.
The world is getting worse with time & So does people.
I feel the same as you as far as the “meanness”. And I agree with the others saying that it is unanimous across the internet.
I personally see it as a generational gap in communication styles happening (both in-game and on the internet in general). Least affected by it is Gen Z, most affected by it is Boomer generation.
While I do agree with you, and it makes me feel very uncomfortable most of the time experiencing this, I’ve been resorting lately to ignoring or turning off chat and other social interactions entirely when I am logged into the game. Mostly due to having other stressful things going on in my life and just using WoW to either relax and distract myself from them, or process what my next IRL steps need to be.
Some days it rolls off my back like water and I can interact without this “meanness” that’s become “mainstream” bothering me.
Most days though, it DOES bother me, and I’d much rather keep my mental healthiness than submit myself to the lowly verbal abusiveness.
While my retreat from social interactions may not be a greatest solution, it works for ME right now. And I suspect that I am not alone in doing this.
I think it might be age.
i think you all are on the wrong servers… i find most people neutral - to friendly.
Pagle, Mankrik, and Atiesh, where 75% of the “conversation” in trade and general chat revolves around GS, H++ tryhard-wannabes, GDKP advertisements, and people reporting other people as GDKP ninjas.
This shouldn’t be taken in the wrong way either. Times change. Decades ago half of what we said online would be reason to cancel someone now and people were just having fun.
So there is a lot to this statement.
While I believe what I said above is true. It’s more complex then that. I also think there are less “Good” people online trying to have fun. Back when this game first came out it was an adventure. Players were just happy to play, it was an experience so that made people more open to help.
I made real life friends from TBC/WotLK originally. People I will talk too the rest of my life and that just is so rare to happen now. It’s not impossible but harder to find a Great guild with like minded people where originally they were plentiful in original Wrath.
I troll atheist forums for fun in my downtime. Sometimes the irony cuts so deep I’m in pain trying to understand if the other person is trolling as well.
Either way, if you think growth and maturity comes slow in real life, can you imagine how slow it happens when the majority of your social life is “anonymous” on message boards predetermined for a demographic you’ve decided to place yourself in
Pretty sure a Prof. Ted Kaczynski predicted all of this.
I’m convinced most forum trolls and generally people who wanna watch the world burn. Have flat back heads.
Mass generalization incoming.
I don’t think the zoomer generation is capable of playing a game for fun. It’s all about efficiency and min maxing. Games are treated as jobs. There’s no joy in it. They can’t just chill out, relax, and have a good time. They take them WAY too seriously.
So you get a playerbase of high-strung, easily irritated people who forget it’s just a game. I honestly feel bad for those types of people. It must be exhausting.
I don’t think people are any more or less mean tbh. Maybe interactions are a little more transactional, but that’s kind of the world in general
Boomer generalization. Lots of people enjoy min maxing. It’s fun for them. Chilling out, relaxing and figuring out how to maximize their character IS a good time for many people, and has been since the beginning of gaming.
We used to code auto rollers that we’d leave for hours or even days at a time to roll ideal characters for MUDS lol. This is not a new thing
I don’t know – I see a lot of “bold” people these days in real life and on the internet. Everyone seems to be itching to just have a brawl…
Kind of sad to see that racism, hate, crime, liars, abuse are considered the norm now.
Maybe that is how they have fun. Just because you don’t think it is, does not make it so. Your idea of fun and someone else’s idea of fun don’t have to be the same and folks need to understand – it is actually ok to not be like someone else.
