Power Supplies!

Yes one of them was in fact from the NEX series. Which was known to have some issues.

The other one I forgot. It was one of their lower end 80+ white psu. I was lucky enough that it was just a burning smell and not a firecracker.

The NEX psu was replaced with a G2 and the other one was replaced with the BR series I believe.

Jon sold JonnyGuru about a decade ago, he really had little to do with most of their reviews. He just posted on their forums. Jeremy (OKwolf) did most of the reviews and Tony (Taz) handled the site. Jeremy stopped doing reviews, really no money in it. Tony could not handle both (once again no money in it) and then developed health issues. The web site stopped after that.

I recall they were doing reviews as late as 2017; which was when I read the review on the Seasonic Focus Plus Gold 850w that I got (2 of)

but if that’s any indication, those two units are going strong. One is powering a 13700k and a 3080, the other a 9900k and a 3070.

they have 10 year warranties.

I have one also, no complaints

actually if memory serves me right (I’m getting on so maybe it doesn’t) I recall you telling me in the forum you got one to power your AMD 5700XT or was it your son’s 5700XT?

my parts float all over the place. I tend to play musical chairs with them. an upgrade in one place tends to shift everything around.

wife had the focus plus with a 5700XT with her 8700; then we upgraded to an 3070 and 9900k

so many combinations lol

ah, I remember you with that computer. I had the 9700k but went to the 12600k. How did you like the 9900k?

i never used it; wife uses it still without any difficulty though.

I was on a 10900K from 2021 until late last year when I picked up the 13700k

My personal builds and those I’ve built for others recently have been running on Seasonic PX series modular platinum PSUs and they’ve been solid. The 5900X/RX 6900 Nitro+ SE build among those exhibited something that seemed like it might’ve been a transient load spike shutdown once while running a game months ago, but it hasn’t happened again since through many hours of that same game as well as games that are more intense, so maybe the power just blinked and that tower was the only thing that got knocked out or something.

Seasonic. When you compare their failure rate and build quality to others there really is no other option reliability wise. Seasonics GOLD build quality wise is the same as other brands Platinum. Corsair is the closest brand to them. Corsair is the brand that wishes they were Seasonic and they try very hard. So if I was unable to get a Seasonic? Than Corsair is the only other brand I would look at.

Definitely counting you on Team Seasonic! That’s a stellar recommendation.

Is there something specific in the design or components that really sets this brand apart or is it a mix of things?

Seasonic has been the primary innovation leader in the PSU market for the past decade. They have also led the market in high energy efficiency

Their units have a more premium look and feel. They also have one of the lowest failure rates in the business. So much so that they make the higher tier power supplys for Corsair, Asus ROG ect ect. Look into it. Their top teir products are rebranded Seasonics basically.

So I’ve owned more seasonics PSU that any other OEM over the years but none of your comments are helpful or even true.

You have access to their failure rate across the board? If you did, you would see they are equal to other brands in failure at equal quality but do suffer from complaints than other top tier units from different brands.

also not true, in fact gold and platinum do not mean quality. It’s simply an efficiency rating test done at room temp at three different intervals.

I would think it was the other way around as Corsair is the more value able brand. That said, you’re simply being sophomoric and going scorched earth to justify your purchase. Corsair and Seasonic both offer various PSU of quality, in fact Corsair currently gets higher recommendations than Seasonic on the leading professional independent review tier list. That said both offer quality units among many other brands.

Primary? They have been a leader for sure but currently the highest rated efficiency units in the consumer market where held by the oems CWT and Flextronics. Seasonic is right there with them since we are talking about marginal fraction of a point but also realize we are talking about consumer units, the JV to the server units that are the varsity in terms of quality and performance.

Once again the lowest failure rate is not accurate. Seasonic used to make the HX line for Corsair, since take over by the HXi line made by CWT. Seasonic also made the AX line for corsair soon taken over by the AXi made by flextronics. Also, I won’t argue over “look and feel” as those are qualitative points based on your opinion but I personally never noticed a difference among equal value brands when it came to look and feel.

Asus uses the Seasonic focus plus gold platform for their ROG unit, a quality bang for your buck platform (I also own it) but hardly a “top tier” platform. The Corsair RMx is a better line and often sold for the same price.

Thing is we are talking about PSU, not jet engines. You would be shocked at how cheaply these things cost to make.

nothing, that doesn’t make them bad. Seasonic is very good at what they do (excellent at times) and focus primarily on higher end units mainly because they are a boutique builder but also that was their niche in the industry. As demand for better units increase so did their business. That said, they hardly have top tier manufacturing facility and testing, it’s very good they just are not on the scale of some of the big guys.

Also, there is no “touch of god” for PSU. They all use the same parts vendors, they all reverse engineer their competitor products, they all use similar designs. We are talking about PSU not an engine from JPL.

The PSU rabbit hole sure is interesting.

With the Corsair PSU’s, such as with the RM850X, is there another company like Seasonic making them under the Corsair name? Or is Corsair just Corsair.

(I’ve confused myself. :upside_down_face:)

Corsair uses companies like greatwall, flextronics, HEC, chicony, CWT. Realize Corsair is extremely hands on with design (as opposed to something like thermaltake) and can take their designs from CWT to Greatwall to HEC.

I understand the whole thing is confusing but realize you don’t get higher FPS from a corsair unit to a cooler master unit.

Find out how much power you need for your current unit and moving forward for your next build. People tend to stay in their lanes for PC tech so if you always get mid tier parts its doubtful you will all sudden go flagship parts.

Find out which connectors your build needs. Find a unit that can deliver your power, has the connectors you need, and gets quality professional independent reviews.

Everything else is an internet fan boy argument by people who couldn’t tell a CWT unit from and Andyson Unit from a Seasonic unit the minute I remove their labels.

And once you get your unit, install it and go back to gaming. It’s a PSU, not a gpu or cpu.

corsair is a brand, they handle the front end of the business so they don’t manufacture anything for anyone even themselves. They are extremely hands on and that doesn’t make their products any less reliable or suffer in quality.

Seasonic is mostly an OEM and but also their own brand. They mostly handle the back end for many other brands (corsair is more involved there than others) but also the front end for their own units. That doesn’t make their products any less reliable or suffer in quality.

Realize the only brand that matters is brand Swarf. I work hard for my money, I purchase items that get quality reviews regardless of brand. My brand loyalty is to myself, not anyone else. I don’t need to carry a flag for brands in my PC to justify my purchases and go scorched earth on the competition.

So you’re saying if I install a Corsair I can get 200 fps…

I’m kidding

200 FPS

your hair will grow back

you get a tax break

neighbors dog will stop pooping in your yard

neighbors wife will flash you

life as you know it will change for the better

And brand Lilybugg!

I’d totally consider a new Lilybugg PSU. You obviously really know what you’re talking about. I feel like a total novice with the things you just casually throw out there lol. You’re a credit to this sub, glad you’re here. Definitely will be hunting for you when I have future questions haha.

I appreciate everyone’s input. It’s all very interesting.
