Don’t overthink it. This is why I shared the list. As stated by others, they can have some overkill reasons for placing certain units in lower tiers, which doesn’t make them bad in an absolute sense, just relative to the other options.
The point is, they do the rabbit hole work for you and you should just get one from the list that you like the looks of, that you can afford, and meets your power requirements.
The list just helps you avoid obvious stinkers. It won’t help you avoid the random QC failures that inevitably happen to all brands.
Personally I use the cybentics/hardware busters tier list. Cybentics testing is far more involved that the 80plus testing. The list is not as encompassing as the one sal posted but they are the highest independent tested units out there. You can google the site, PCgamer and Toms hardware also have the best of lists since he does their reviews as well.
not letting me link it but try this, remove the space after “hwbusters” and the one before “com”. He does the reviews for techpowerup, toms, pcgamer. Most tier lists are based on his reviews and then they move the units around based on their personal bias.
Just don’t buy a Gigabyte PSU. I got suckered into one when we were hard up for GPUs with a lottery bundle so I had no real choice but to get it.
I did use it, but in a very low powered build (i3-10100F, 16GB RAM, 1 SSD, RX 580 8GB) and it works fine as far as I know. I gave it to my nephew, with the warning that it shouldn’t be used with very powerful graphics cards despite its rating.
Sal, catching fire and exploding is a feature of that line and you should tell your nephew to use it on the 4th of July.
In all seriousness we joke about the 'shenzhen special" in our offices and gigabyte literally found a shenzhen special for their OEM. That line severely damaged their ability to make a larger presence in the gaming market.
Oh wow. Is it best to avoid Gigabyte PSU’s all together or just some models? I like their mobo’s but have never had one of their PSU’s.
*edit - looked up some youtube info on it. Wow, that’s crazy.
Oh man, finished watching the Gamer’s Nexus vids on this and wow… the way Gigabyte spun things every which way but loose to try and save face is concerning.
historically Giga mainly focused on budget units from well known OEMs like enhance, acbel, cwt, fsp, among others that offered various levels of mediocre performance. They decided to enter the top end PSU market with an OEM better known for power banks and mobile power adapters. They created three new lines
the Aorus line, which was pretty good considering the oem if not a little loud
the GP-P line, which they are currently most known for (mostly going belly up)
the UD line for their new 1000w unit which is OK, nothing special and has two eps connectors on the same cable for some reason
I would personally skip their current generation of PSU regardless of line
corsair rm850x
quiet, clean (modular ftw)
comes with x6 8pin(6+2) pcie connectors (enough wires for two 6700xt with a spare)
all other psu brands inferior
once again incorrect, especially when talking about a brand like evga that offers a wide spectrum of performance in their PSU. Your just being sophomoric and going scorched earth on other brands to justify your purchase.
