The post count on the forum seems to wipe every time I change or adjust my name/race, from what I’ve noticed — but I’m always posting, and I honestly have no idea how the hell this trust level thing even works…

It is some strange requirement but the good news is only the name change resets your progress, you can race change with the same name and keep your progress.
Also you can post un-clickable links by doing ` before and after the link
For example
examplewebsite.com
Although just anyone can embed YouTube videos which can be almost anything which makes no sense

Correct. Because the character changes, it’s considered a new character.
There should be a pinned post that explains the trust levels and how to acquire them. If you want specifics on how far you are from it, you can ask in the CS forum. They’ve been known to give people the info they need. I got that info a while back, as well, because those of us that were in beta ages ago had account wide permanent trust level 3. When the date for it dropped, we were all back to level 2 and it was annoying.
Had to re-earn it again which is also ridiculous. No one wants to farm forum rep weekly.

You can theoretically post pictures by making a YouTube video with that picture as the thumbnail? IMO the rules are arbitrary and strange. I also think it should be account-based progress and not character-based progress.

Yes… this post explains trust levels and what it takes to be able to post pictures. If you weren’t aware the forums have a reputation that you have to continually grind on one character to be able to post pictures. Changing characters, or changing the name or server of a character will reset your stats to zero.

Changing race is fine. Your forum progress is tied to charactername-servername. So changing your name and/or your server is what messes things up.

The trust levels thing sucks. If I take a break from the game, I somehow lose trust levels. It should only be if you post things against tos.

Yeah, it’s a shame how to system works.
I’ve had Level 3 a few times. But having to maintain it, makes the forums degenerate into people making silly repeat threads and answering in the most neutral ambiguous way possible just to keep the status. It doesn’t promote healthy debate. Any hot takes get slapped with a flag and there goes the level 3. You start to sort of tip toe with your posts.
Not that you should be offensive, just saying, people here are waaaaay to quick to flag and ignore anyone that remotely disagrees with them.
After like 3 times, I gave up. Don’t care to keep another FOMO system for this game.

Just FYI the trust system doesn’t promote debate for a completely different reason than the one you’ve stated here, mainly that it doesn’t require you to make threads and only requires you to make 10 posts every 100 days, with like a tiny handful of likes needed. The vast majority of the requirement to get and keep it is simply reading (or autoscrolling through megathreads) and logging into the forum every day.
I feel like i had the max trust level for years without needing to go out of my way to do anything, then within the last couple of months it was taken away and i don’t think my normal day to day use is going to bee enough to get it back. Seems like a bit of a silly system, you can have people hanging here for years not doing anything wrong, but being restricted in some ways because they didn’t jump through certain hurdles 
I never really posted that many links or images anyway, it’s just a bit annoying when i do occasionally go to link something and get the message that I’m not allowed to do it lol

The forum software identifies your avatar by its name and server. My current name was originally a warlock made in 2019. That’s why I have so many posts, even though my paladin is only a year old.
I’d suggest making a forum character. I was able to race change my hunter and nothing happened, but I was already maxed on my trust level.
Maybe get your trust level up before race changing again? Idk.

- Flag posts
- Post more than 3 topics
- Post more than 10 replies
TRUST LEVEL 1
Get to trust level 1 by…
- Entering at least 5 topics
- Reading at least 30 posts
- Spend a total of 10 minutes reading posts
Users at trust level 1 can…
- Post unlimited topics and replies
- Edit wiki posts (more on Wiki Posts Below)
- Flag posts
- Create links and video embeds to trusted websites like Blizzard websites, YouTube, or Twitch
TRUST LEVEL 2
Get to trust level 2 by…
- Visiting at least 15 days, not sequentially
- Casting at least 1 like
- Receiving at least 1 like
- Replying to at least 3 different topics
- Entering at least 20 topics
- Reading at least 100 posts
- Spend a total of 60 minutes reading posts
Users at trust level 2 can…
- Have an increased “like” count.
TRUST LEVEL 3
Get to trust level 3 by…
- Must have visited at least 50% of last 100 days
- Must have replied to at least 10 different topics
- Of topics created in the last 100 days, must have viewed 500 topics
- Of posts created in the last 100 days, must have read 20,000 posts (both starting posts and replies)
- Must have received 20 likes, and given 30 likes.
- Must not have received more than 5 spam or offensive flags (with unique posts and unique users for each, confirmed by a moderator)
- Must not have been suspended (including forum suspensions or in-game account actions of any Blizzard game)
Trust Level 3 users can
- Create Wiki Posts (more on that below)
- Post animated gifs, images, compatible video embeds, and links to any website
For regular users, even if you are Trust Level 3 on the Overwatch, Heroes of the Storm, or BlizzCon forums, your forum stats and trust level will be different here.
Sadly, I meet all these requirements for trust level 3 on this character but I was suspended from the forums last year for a week, and I was suspended 2 times in game. Once during Cata or MoP, and another time in Shadowlands. So I’m pretty sure I’ll never get trust level 3.
