Portal Network Rank 3 - How to piss off players

So the portal network rank 3 has a transmog set tied to it. You’d think this would be some fun, quick and dirty content, seeing how unlocking it is time-gated to heck and back through the weekly souls quests.

You’d think the content was "Spend 17k Anima, spend 33 Souls (so around 4-5 weeks worth if doing it since the start of the expansion), and then grab a map of “portals” (which doesn’t really exist yet) and go around farming chests to get your transmog.

If this were a typical game company making a typical game, you’d be right.

But Blizzard on the other hand, had to turn a multi-week time gated unlock into a new chore. No, what you get with Rank 3 isn’t so much a transmog treasure hunt, what you get is a set of daily chores, with RNG. You get to open “3 portals” daily, that swap around each week, and within those 3 portals, you get a CHANCE of getting a chest. In that chest, you get a CHANCE of getting a transmog piece (and that isn’t exactly high).

Thanks Blizzard for squeezing every last bit of fun out of everything.

What does this mean ? I’m not crying, I’m offering my criticism of their content design philosophy. It’s a Sanctum cosmetic set, it doesn’t have to be made super exclusive through frustrating RNG, after being massively time gated.

It doesn’t make me want to farm it. It discourages me from engaging with the content because it’s so abusive to my time for no reason. This isn’t fun.

Wait, that’s seriously how you get the 4th armor set appearance?

Boy, that is awful

Yes, that’s how you get the Portal network covenant set. I forgot to throw in the part where the daily “portals” require currency that you need to farm to open up. It costs 60% of my total currency cap to fix the mirrors (60 rubies daily, on a 100 ruby cap).

I think only for Venthyr.

The 4th necrolord set probably has to do with the final construct you form called Unity with the final upgrade to the Abom Factory.

That’s actually stupid, if it’s gunna take that much effort and the chests are low as well as the reward

Should be the entire set at once instead of building it

The Venthyr also have a Ember Court set, based on building the blacksmith building, which I’m sure will also be a big time gate once you unlock the blacksmith time gate (because let’s face it, the Ember court is a time gated mess already).

Yeah the ember court one seems really bad. Just because the ember court is insanely boring.

The kyrian one seems like it’s going to be the worst because it’s like the brawler’s guild except you need to defeat opponents on 4 different difficulties and you need to farm a currency for each attempt at a boss.

All in all you need to defeat 60 opponents for the Kyrian one as well as complete achievements that increase the difficulty.

Blizzard HATES US.

You know, that sounds actually decent. Farm a currency, murder a thing, get a thing. That’s not bad.

Better than farm a currency, unlock a thing, farm another currency, keep trying at RNG chests.

Well you have to farm the other currencies too. For Kyrian, you have to farm souls and anima and then there’s an additional currency. The Kyrian one would be awesome if you had unlimited attempts. But acquisition of that currency is time gated and it’s just another daily chore on top of everything.

So, like the Venthyr’s rubies. They all seem to follow similar-ish conventions. The Ember Court also has you pay for repairs in rubies from time to time before you can start it.

Yep, really makes you wonder why they are capped at 100… oh right, so you’re stuck doing chores all the time.

So you have to repair the mirror’s daily? With three up you’d be spending 60 rubies each day? What.

60*7 a week.

I’ve never had to worry about them though. The Kyrian one is legitimately challenging and the currency is scarce. Not like rubies that are pretty much always 100/100 for me without even trying to get them.

edit: I haven’t repaired the mirrors though so I suppose that’s the difference.

That’ll change once you start spending them on mirror repair kits at 20 a pop, which is a 1 time use item. 60*7 is 420 rubies per week.

Well, yes, exactly. You play (or design) games long enough, you begin the see the tropes.

What you describe as chores, they describe as engagement :yum:

The only “engagement” they are creating is people engaging the unsubscribe button.
