So, after having a discussion with someone in another thread. I realized that there actually isn’t a general consensus for why the humans we meet down below have pointy ears. There are currently two theories that I have heard for this phenomonon.
A-they are a hybrid of humans and elves
b-Magic changed them
c-They’re from a different timeline (Breakcog’s suggestion)
The Arathi of Hallowfall - New Settlement, Origin Location - Wowhead News
I fall into group A my reasoning being that the group we meet underground say they hail from a “Light” kingdom across the sea. They claim to be from the arathi highlands originally but their kingdom was founded 1,000 years ago, across the sea. Now if you know lore than the arathi highlands was the first kingdom that made peace with the high elves. The high elves came down to teach them magic back during the troll wars. If these are the same people than it stands to reason that them and the elves have been co-mingling for over 1,000 years. Aka-hybrid human elves.
B-magic changed them. We know that magic changed the trolls into the original elves, so it isn’t that hard to believe that being in a “light” kingdom than the light may have been changing them over the same time period.
But what do you guys think? What is more likely? And what would you prefer?

I mean. If I were underground I’d imagine my race would eventually figure out “oh, larger ears survive better” and have that trait happen over many many many years.

They’ve only been underground for 15 years though? They are from this “light” kingdom across the sea, but got teleported underground 15 years prior to us showing up. We only meet a small fraction of the people.

Nah it’s okay, I think a lot of people think that. Because we show up and they already have full cities formed which is amazing for 15 years.

Well, if the half elf theory is correct, we could see elves with human ears.
Possibly even eye color changes and stuff but idk.

Seems like the two most probable outcomes, along with general adaptation. We learned they haven’t been underground for very long though, around fifteen years or so. So that throws out adaptation and seemingly being half Human and half Elf. That just leaves magic, more specifically that giant crystal in their territory.

I think being hybrids is more likely. The “magic changed them” idea is intriguing, though. Trying to go spoiler-light, but I think I read in a thread here that elves were getting a round ear option, too.
I think I’m fine with either.

I don’t think it rules out being half or hybrid elves. Because the high elves joined the arathi over 1000 years ago. If they sailed to this new kingdom together than they’ve had 1000 years to co-mingle. Though if the ears are a recent phenomenon than yes, the crystal would be the only real explanation. We would have to wait and see I guess,
Half Elves seems like the best option to me.

I prefer it over the idea of magical changes, but that’s just because I find the idea of a kingdom made up of hybrid human elves to be interesting.
CHAOTIC THIRD OPTION: DIFFERENT TIMELINE! 
They mention Lothar, an emperor, lynxes as mounts, and journeyed during Vanilla-- smells like time magic.
