Please keep SoD PVP alive: A plea to the devs from someone who really loves your game

My friends and I subscribe to WoW specifically for SoD PvP. I promise I’m not here to complain about pvp balance or make some moronic claim about how the devs favor this class or another. I actually love SoD PvP and know many others who think it is incredibly fun.

But I can’t tell you how many fresh 60’s in guild and general chat have expressed sadness and disappointment in finding out that AV is dead, WSG is dead, and AB is barely hanging on.

I understand the dev team does not have pvp anywhere near the top of its priority list, but you guys have proven to us in the past that you are willing to take feedback and shift gears in a surprisingly receptive and efficient manner. I am under no illusions that a forum post will make you guys suddenly do a 180 and pour all your manpower into pvp, so instead in this post I am going to ask you to consider some changes and additions that I think would have the highest impact towards PvP longevity in SoDs imminent “era” phase, while hopefully staying realistic for what your team is willing to tackle.

I am by no means a game developer, so please excuse my potential ignorance in what I assume could potentially be a practical endeavor for the team right now.

  1. Allow players to que for battlegrounds from anywhere in the world à la retail. I see this as a small change that could help revive battlegrounds, allowing players to que up and continue to world pvp or farm gold or do whatever they want in between ques. I understand the drawback of this is less foot traffic in the cities and could be considered against the spirit of classic, but this is SoD, not classic era, and at this point the battleground que rooms in all major cities are completely empty anyway.

  2. Allow players to turn in AB and WSG marks for something valuable. This is potentially the most critical aspect to reviving pvp in SoD. Now, “something valuable”, what does that mean? The most obvious answer is tarnished reals and gold. While I do believe this would incentivize players to que, I think taking the rewards one step further could absolutely guarantee a thriving revival of SoD PvP: Cosmetic Rewards. I am aware that this is absolutely not a small task and requires a good bit of manpower, but new recolors to existing tier sets and new glowing enchant effects on weapons would 100% bring a level of excitement and participation to pvp that SoD has never seen before. But again, if this is not a realistic option at this time (this would be so damn cool if you guys did this :sob:), then I totally understand and would again default to tarnished coins and just raw gold as rewards for pvping. Further, making the different marks from each different BG required to get the rewards will solve the issue of players congregating towards only AB or only WSG.

  3. Arenas. This does not have to look like retail arena, where it’s the ultimate test of competitive pvp skill and ability. We can approach this from an angle of just pure fun. I’ve brought this concept up to countless players, and every response goes something along the lines of “YESSS” or “That would be so much damn fun.” We don’t need 10 different maps, 1 map will work just fine. A 1v1 dueling arena seems very much in the spirit of classic to me, and of course a 2v2 and 3v3 would also be welcome. You que for 2v2, get matched up with 3 players super quick, and just duke it out. You can add ratings for bragging rights, but adding new gear is absolutely not needed and would be counter to the idea of it being just for fun. If I had to put myself in the dev team’s shoes, I could imagine that there have been reservations to adding arena due to the competitive integrity of SoDs current pvp meta, but my argument to that would be that it would still be an incredibly fun and popular addition to the game despite that.

  4. New Battleground. Again I’d like to mention my potential ignorance regarding how realistic this endeavor would be, but I only even mention it because I’ve seen multiple developers mention how surprisingly quick and easy it was for them to make Demonfall Canyon. If making an entire dungeon was less effort then they thought, I can only imagine a simple battleground where they don’t have to worry about mobs, boss mechanics, loot, or a huge layout, would only be even easier. Still though this would obviously require hard work from the devs but would go so far in revitalizing pvp.

  5. Blackrock Mountain and Bloodmoon. These have been some of the most creative and fun pvp implementations in any iteration of WoW, but just like battlegrounds, they are completely dead. This is especially problematic with bloodmoon because the vendor has become effectively inaccessible to players who missed that wave, leaving them unable to get critical pieces and trinkets. Some solutions could be to make blackrock mountain also give bloodmoon coins for its event, as well as tarnished coins, gold, and cosmetic rewards similar to my proposal with battleground marks of honor. Also making a portal to each event in the major cities so players can quickly jump into the action could go a long way. Additionally, the loa boss coin bonus needs to also stay in 1 part of the zone (Gurubashi arena and its surrounding area), to concentrate player activity in one area.

  6. Fix Warsong Gulch. There are 3 major issues making warsong gulch a broken battleground right now and im quite sure you guys are already aware of all 3: Flag carriers spamming consumables being impossible to catch, a broken map with glitches and jumps over terrain that shouldnt be possible, and a lack of a timer. Keeping in mind minimal effort on your guys part, I concede that fixing the broken terrain might be a big undertaking, but adding a 20-30 minute timer and making the flag carrier unable to use consumables would go a long way. (Im not adding “fix AV” to the list because I think that battleground is just broken to its core and needs an entire rework from the ground up).

I think the SoD team have done a genuinely amazing job with the game, and I really do believe there is the potential for more juice to be squeezed out on the pvp side of things. The thirst is there, I see it with all the new and old players I talk to every day.

I realize I’m throwing a lot out there on this post, and am of course not demanding any of these changes be implemented, but I do hope they may get some ideas flowing for you guys. I think you would be surprised at the reception to some PvP love (especially the arenas!). Either way, thank you for all the work you guys do!

please dont, I play warrior and even in BiS I do 1/5th or less the pvp damage any other class can do on demand, often from range, with all instant casts

maybe also address some script users so we don’t get something like venruki discovering the arena cheating, thanks. Insane that certain rogues can just trace you as if you weren’t in stealth nowadays.

I do just play WoW because of SoD tho, PvP situation is looking crap. They have to do something about it!, i love the game i love the theorycraft in pvp builds, love everything about SoD.
Sugestions short-rate: Rank 15, PvP events, arenas…
Long-rate: new bg’s exclusive to SoD

The moment you add a timer to this BG people give up after the first cap.

Agree with all of this besides putting rating on the arena. Just make it a game mode with a cosmetic or toy you get for doing 1000 matches or something. If there is no rating then it is explicitly for fun. Keep mmr so high level pvpers can brag about killing each other but leave it hidden so no bragging rights on an unbalanced game.

Rating should only be used if the team is actively balancing for PvP arenas. Otherwise it’s just a measure of which player is running the most busted specs.

I wonder if it wouldn’t take much effort to duck tape a few TBC arenas into sod… would definitely extend sod lifespan by a lot

Being able to beta test Azshara bg in sod before classic+ is the holy grail to me as a bg enjoyer

By ignoring PvP, they are forcing PvPers to camp and grief in the open world. Makes the whole populations morale drop lol

Gonna be hard to fix it at this point. Fresh 60’s are gonna have a rough time going against guys in full BIS, just one shotted immediately, while hitting them like a wet noodle. They’d need some sort of system that scans item level and pairs up people based on the gear they’re wearing. A rating system could work too but not sure how that would be implemented in BG’s where the numbers are much higher than in an arena match.

There’s a lot of us that only subscribe and login for SOD PVP, and we keep losing people to the complete neglect for PVP in this game.

Now that the dev team has their hands free of PVE content, it is time to bring back focus to PVP.

If nothing is done, then it will leave a sour taste in our mouths for any future SOD or Classic Plus content that might come.

Why would we continue a subscription if our favorite part of the game gets continuously neglected?

Thanks for posting this. Something needs to be done. AB is probably in its final weeks now. Especially with all paladins and warriors now farming gold for cashbringer instead of queuing. I remember watching wsg die it was so sad.

You have a total of 100 hks. No one has ever seen you in a BG. Your opinion isn’t needed.

With it being on the modern client, a lot can be done outside of pvp easily for not a huge time commitment…

add training dummies.
take some abilities off the gcd starting with interrupts…
faster gryphons
add achievements
add transmog that can be toggleable…

Add horde paladins / ally shaman… This will be more work, but will get folks into the world. I would also add jewel crafting (this would be some work as well, but would spice up the content)

In a game that already has push-back on spells? Sheesh.

Because you’re trash and have repeatedly exposed yourself as such.

I don’t think spell pushback has ever been removed…

I’m almost certain Retail does not have any meaningful pushback.

Maybe only give it to melee then (horde side, there is a melee storage), make it a way to give them some more utility in raid.

You are hard stuck rank 8 bud, you don’t even PvP.

Might of Menethil hits Ret for 390

Bloodthirst hits Ret for 340

Ret keyboard turns and does 7,200 in one GCD.

Yeahhhhh… in tbc and wotlk classic I had no problem getting all the gear or even pushing up high enough where my wall was all rank 1 and glad players (2600mmr+ when cap was around 2800). It’s totally a skill issue that I just die in one hit to a Ret lol. And then you have hunters, SPriests, boomkins, and now even mages everywhere doing bad (but not as egregious) things. Ice lance STILL does close to 2k dmg even after pvp tuning. And they can just spam it. Boomkin in a trade still does more than double your highest dmg ability with only instant casts like moonfire and starsurge. Starfall on top of that you just melt to instants.

Arms, according to Zirene, didnt even get support in SoD and does less than half the dmg of the next worst dps spec in the game. Fury is entirely reliant on 0 armor targets and world buffs to be in the bottom half of raid dps. Prot is low damage and actually the best way to play warrior, as you can stun people to extend your 0-3 second life to 4-7 or maybe a little longer. And shield slam can hit harder than any of your other abilities + devastate auto-applies a few sunders (you still cant fast stack like rogues or priest lol).

Disgruntled employees made it a design goal that warrior was the least desirable class to pick in SoD by a margin vastly exceeding the prior worst outlier in the last 20 + years. There are more ways to viably play ret paladin than the warrior class in its entirety.
