There are so many reward structures in WoW that reward putting in time. Like, every reputation ever. Saying getting something for putting in time is antithetical to WoW is just hilariously stupid.

Now you are just being pedantic to be pedantic. Reputations can not be earned in a prepatch to the expansion. They are also not a profession.
I think they got rid of thunderforging/warforging which is the titanforging equivalent in MoP in the prepatch for WoD. Memory is a bit fuzzy but I remember that being insanely unpopular.
Titanforging similar to those iterations was added in Legion and then also removed. Last I heard they added a similar mechanic to DF but they changed it dramatically to remove the RNG out of it. I could be wrong on that one since I haven’t played retail since Legion, the best example of RNG design out there.

Again, there are many, MANY rewards systems that have only very minor RNG or none at all. Professions are typically amongst those.
