Blood and Frost don’t have permanent pets. That’s why nobody calls them pet specs.
MM has a permanent pet. That’s why it’s a pet spec.

They’re cherry picking the narrative Kavax provided to fit their narrative.
It’s literally all in black and white that Marksmanship hunters should have always had a pet, and will now be receiving one. But they don’t want to admit that.
How are they going to customize something that exists outside of the game space?
Who forces you not to use pet as MM hunter? Meta? That 5% dps difference?
Seriously stop chasing the meta, and play the game any way you want it.
Though most of my MM hunters tend to be archer fantasy I use pets extensively as I tend to farm old content for mogs and such. I’m not a mythic+ player, I don’t care about top end pvp or pve. I want to have my hunter, have a pet tank and play MM while farming 1-2 expac old content as well as doing current expac solo content (I’m not talking about soloing things meant for 10 players, I’m not that cutting edge, I’m talking about surviving and thriving just doing regular stuff)
In-character for my RP character hunters yes they don’t always have pets with them in-character (like in cities) but in-game, the way I actually play I use hunter pets all the time. It’s useful to have a tank and this has been an option for hunters since the very start, at least since I started in BC. Hunters were always that excellent soloing class. Great for going back for old content, great for doing current world content solo. And the pets were an important part of that I was more than willing to take the trade-off of not dying and being able to kill something I couldn’t otherwise on my own for 5% less damage.
This is one of a series of nerfs to solo-play for hunters. I’ve long been annoyed by the move to make survival a non-ranged spec as to me that’s not what hunters are so they’ve already taken one spec out of consideration for me. I don’t have any interest in that kind of nonsense so I was left with two specs which is fine but now I’m set to be forced to either entirely give up my archer fantasy and play BM which I don’t find that enjoyable at all given the rotation, spells, etc or endure the most un-archer-like playing experience.
Also let’s point out, the fantasy of being a sniper/archer doesn’t work in game-play without a proper pet that can tank and hold the attention of mobs, otherwise you just have this incredibly goofy look of shooting at mobs point blank while they maul your face which isn’t the archer/sniper aesthetic at all. And part of that is having a proper pet you can command including using move-to commands, turning on taunt, misdirecting to it, etc. A temporary combat pet can’t be misdirected to before a pull if it only exists in combat.
Another thing, this is part of a long war on solo-play for hunters. I still miss. I am still VERY upset about the loss of spirit bond for hunters which allowed 2-3% health active regen with a pet active which we had for many years back in the day which was an incredible boon for doing solo content including last expansion raids and other difficult things that were punishing. Without it my hunters STILL struggle with health management as any damage at all becomes a problem given we have mitigation but only one heal ability outside of pet abilities which has long CD. Without a pet tank for MM this becomes even more of a problem as we get beaten on and mauled in the face slowing us down.
While I love the fantasy of the archer, in practice MM is not ready or suitable for such a change as pet removal. Not without buffing traps for example to the point of breaking the game to prevent mobs getting to the player and allow them to keep range while still allowing the player to occasionally stop movement to use abilities that can’t be used while moving (also this will never work, Blizzard would inevitably give tons of mobs immunity to slows and snares so in many, many cases this would simply be a broken solution).
In other words this is an AWFUL idea that I’m very against as a long-time hunter player and enjoyer.
(The ONLY thing I liked about BM was the ability to tame and use exotic pets, it’s the only reason I even have the spec, I prefer MM so much more)
And yes I also have an affinity for certain pets on my characters. They have STORIES behind them and why a given character has a given pet, they have friendships, bonds. It is a massive downgrade to be forced to have a generic eagle when my elf has a special wolf who she has had many adventures with over her ten year history who has a reason to be by her side in fights when she needs her.
Yet the ghoul has about the same functionality as an mm pet lol.
They exist. MM gets a little more us in that it can tank and hero. Other than that, it is the goldfish sitting in a bowl, on your desk looking pretty.
Beats me. I didn’t make that definition lol.
I’d assume via glyphs or something. Rogues can customize their distract. Hunters can customize their flare. I assume it will work the same.
But it’s not a permanent pet. So it does not provide the same functionality.
Because it’s harmless to allow the OPTION to have a pet. Why remove something that isn’t causing harm even if it’snot used a lot. Guess we should remove all human pinky finger. It is after-all the least used and least important finger. No one needs the option to use it if they want. Goodbye pinkie.
Why?
SO FIX THAT WITHOUT REMOVING THE OPTION OF USING A PET.
Not in a way that excludes a minority in a way that isn’t remotely necessary.
Tell me. What negative thing happens, how would it negatively impact the majority to remove pet utility from pets but keep the option to use pets on MM?
Pet AI will almost always be awful in any game. Hunter is a pet class and has been since vanilla. You all anti pet hunter crowd already got the option to go petless, but that wasn’t enough for you. You now want to take away the option to use a pet.
But that’s irrelevant. Emotions are relevant. People who are upset at a game or change may stop playing.
Feelings don’t care about your facts. And feelings control where people spend their money on recreation.
And only one pet, an eagle at that. Which fits maybe 2 or 3 races thematically.
Clearly this solution has upset people too or this post wouldn’t have 2k comments.
Which as has been said probably 100 + times in this thread can be fixed without removing the option of summong your pet.
It’s irrelevent if that’s the focus. The point is they’re taking the CHOICE away with no benefit. Because any benefit from this change CAN be done without taking the pet away as an option.
I’d rather give the hunter the utility and let us keep pets. Ty.
Or they could not remove the option.
If you mean pets other than birds (or similar, e.g. wyrmlings) then yes, we’re not aligned.
Why does being permanent mean anything. It can be argued that mm’s is even more temporary in that most summon it just for hero then dismiss it lol.
move lust to talents and forget about it
it was iterated 100050230420341 times
If that was true, then Blizzard would not be making the changes they are.
Again, since Warlords of Draenor, when Lone Wolf was first introduced, the fantasy behind the MM spec has been focused around maximizing damage with your bow/gun/crossbow and not having a pet out. During Legion you lost 30% of your ability damage if you had a pet out.
This change is no different than the Frost Mage changes that removed the Water Elemental as a permanent summon (and instead made it summoned whenever you cast Icy Veins) because most Frost Mage players picked Lonely Winter for the DPS increase over having the elemental out all the time.
Blizzard has made significant changes to specs like this multiple times throughout WoW’s long history. The people making a mountain out of a molehill over this aren’t doing themselves any favours and are just making themselves look foolish while they overreact to something that isn’t even testable yet.
Which was ALSO a horrible decicion that they should undo asap.
Whos phantasy?
Ion’s? He is delulu, inept, hateful towards players and out of touch.
No, it wasn’t, and now most Frost Mage players have moved on and live with the changes that have been made.
The Water Elemental as a permanent summon was useless. The pathetic amount of extra DPS it offered paled in comparison to the larger amount of DPS gained if you picked the Lonely Winter talent, which most players did.
Hunters are a different story tho.
Mages were never really the pet class.
I am still upset about it as are other mages. The option of a perma-pet didn’t hurt anyone. And increased my enjoyment. if I was pushing harder content I’d take lonely winter but whenever I wouldn’t I’d have my perma pet.
Taking away that choice benefited NOBODY.
I don’t really care. I had it for 12 years and wanted to keep it.
Most is not all.
I can have my pet out 24/7 if I so desired. It is thus an integrated part of my character that I can use for any length of time.
Blood and Frost DKs have an optional talent to temporarily raise a minion.
Trying to say these things are equivalent is incredibly dishonest.
I won’t be responding to any more pro pet removal until someone can answer me this.
Or a nice system of open world dailies and leveling BM. Instances switch to MM.
It’s How I ran mine in Retail. and cata series since that hunter actually has dual spec.
Classic MM hunter was not running say wrath dailies nearly as well as BM was. same for TB dailes really.
Now my era refresh level grinder is too poor for respec and no plans to dual spec. That costs money I save for the space goat paladin to come.
She will BM until tbc 70 really. then I can splurge on MM or SV costs.
Retail has free skills, a much better respec system (also free). Some need to use that really. I miss this in classic, retail has it much better in this area.
