Please Disable Guards Flagging Players If They Are Not Attacked Back

I have always ran, I have survived 90% of the times, Playing No Death since 2012

OK.
Testng in Era.
Tarren Mill Deathguards: Aggroes me, almost killed me, dazed and attacked, but no flag.
1K Needles lift Guards: at level 36 they were not able to hit me very hard. I ran circes around them, being hit a lot! but NOT flagged!

Not getting flagged is the bug. You should have been. Apparently, this was fixed on HC.

What utter hogwash. Guards attacking you should NOT flag you especially not on the HC servers.

For good measure I ran through Camp Taurajo. I got attacked by I think any and all guards in the camp. They finally killed me, but I was NOT flagged there either

I’m sure Blizzard’s response to this would be along the lines of “Just be more careful and it wont happen” Then you die vs a bug “Working as intended.” You die vs any NPC swarming “Skill issue”. Thats how they view it. We are kinda on our own here. You make it, you make it, you don’t, you don’t. That’s how they view and that’s how it is.

I am still going to report Guards flagging you as a bug. It is not working as intended, and just maybe they’ll fix it. If we do not report, surely nothing happens.

This is how guards have always worked on PVE servers.

Annoying how you run past them in certain areas and then they follow you half way across the zone. At that point you have one of only two options… either keep running and allow them to beat the crap out of you and hope you survive, or you can defend yourself and attack back, which then will alert any from the opposing faction that an area is under attack so you then risk being killed by the opposing faction.

Yer funny.

It will not become true from your repeating it again and again.

As said, I always ran, and mostly survived. But normally I also do not try to run through Camp Taurajo

Or the area in Redridge where many Horde run though for a shortcut… then you get zerg rushed by the guards. Some of the hardrore World PvPers still have the world defense addon that tell when any zone is attacked anywhere in the game, so you will have to face one of those guys when all you did was make a little mistake.

And Blizzard did say they were going to make it extremely difficult to accidently flag yourself for PvP in HC realms when running past these NPCs or even when trying to help a player flagged for PvP and you help them by healing them… but… they didnt do that. Flagging still works the same. You only have to type it for DTTD. Not for PvP flagging.

Stay out of those zones, especially at low levels, and you’ll be fine.

They don’t follow you halfway across the zone unless you reset their leash by attacking them or taking actions that reaet the leash. The correct thing to do is not attack them and use a LIP, swiftness potion, stopwatch, etc if they get too close which gives you plenty of time to leash them.

I found a great explanation of mob leashing on Wowhead’s Hardcore Tips and Tricks page. It’s deffo worth a read.

(Not saying you’re not 100% correct, just thought they had a really useful breakdown of leashing.)

I just want to thank everyone for bug testing for me so I don’t have to.

Now I did what I should have done from the beginning. When in doubt, consult a book.
I still have the old Game Manual, that came with the Vanilla CD’s.
I looked under PvP on Normal realms (The word for PvE realms throughout this manual):

On the normal realm, PvP mode is disabled by default. … You can enable this flag by doing any of the following:

  • Attacking an NPC of an opposing faction, such as the opposing faction’s aerial mount master, guards, quest giver, vendor, or similar NPC.
  • Attacking an opposing player that attacked a friendly NPC. By counterattacking the first player, you enable PvP mode, and opposing players can begin attacking you.
  • Aiding a player engaged in NPC combat.
  • Entering an enemy capital city.

Besides these four ways you can also type /pvp at the chat prompt to enable PvP mode. In all cases, other players can only attack you if you enable the PvP flag through your own actions. You always have control over whether opposing players can attack you or not on a PvE realm. That means PvP is consensual-only on normal realms.

Ergo passing by guards, running through Camp Taurajo, visiting Tarren Mill, using the Great Lift and so on should NOT flag me for PvP. Not in Vanilla, not in Classic, and not in HC realms either.

The hc / pvp patch seems to have done quite a lot of changes on the backend (addon devs were complains about the APIs changing, the menu UI is new, textures are a bit diff, etc).

This may have unintentionally brought in the guard pvp flagging scheme from retail, which seems to have the observed behavior.

As so much came over from Retail this could be an explanation, but it does not explain why in Classic – that had the same changes – the Guards etc. works as in Vanilla. My guess is that it is something entirely HC related.

Yeah I was thinking if my theory was correct we would also see it in era.

If you what you say is accurate then I am probably wrong or there is more to the picture that is still missing.

So missing pieces to the puzzle for sure.
I don’t blame you for not reading the whole thread
