This is going to become a problem if not now later. There are multiple places in the game where guards will patrol and flag unsuspecting players. What is going to happen is that as the game progresses multiple people are going to camp in these area’s waiting for these players to get hit by a guard and then kill them.
To make a sidenote there are other things that will probably be exploited as well, one of these is mobs that mindcontrol as players will camp and wait for the npc to mc a player and then kill them as well.
These things are just going to be tools used to grief in the future.

This was a bug introduced with the hardcore servers. Examples from a few months ago of players not getting flagged from being hit by a guard on Era servers:

I hope that Blizzard finds a way to change it back to how it used to work in Era. The griefing is going to get bad.

This has always been a thing on PVE servers. Be aware of your surroundings and it’s not a problem.

Nope. In Era, before the hardcore servers, you only got flagged if you attacked a guard. Just being hit did not flag you. It’s a bug.

are you sure you are not attacking the guards with some kind of reactive/reflective ability?

Yes I am, it’s clear from the videos. It’s also how it’s been for years in unofficial HC.

Glad someone linked this because someone was talking about this guard flagging people and I explained I did this fine on non-official.
I think patting guards should either be removed or not be PvP enabled in any capacity. In a game version where PvP is not the focus on those NPC pats do not add anything other than grief attempts it’s really not necessary.
Honestly you could probably just disable the entire PvP concept for all towns IMO. Make cities a sanctuary. Probably a step too far but just disable ALL PvP, let horde and alliance group.

All they need to do is fix the bug. Being attacked should not flag. If you attack a guard, then you get flagged. It was fine the way it was.

I’ve played on PVE servers since OG Wrath. Getting too close to guards or enemy towns has always flagged you for PVP.

You’re not wrong I just don’t think being able to even attack them adds anything to the game at this point. Most people are SSF outside of dungeon group.
Or at least just turn off any PvP concept with guards
I was flagged many times back in the day because I was new to the game and didn’t know where all the Horde areas were as an Alliance player.
You’re misremembering. You can see videos proving the opposite.
Classic has been full of bugs. I wouldn’t take what happened on Era as gospel for what should have happened.
So what you are telling me is …
- being attacked by a guard did not flag in Classic for 4 years
- Blizz launches hardcore servers with a bunch of anti-grief, anti-non-consensual PvP fixes / changes
- and then they also deliberately make a change that if you are passive with a guard, you get flagged
It doesn’t make sense that it’s intentional.
If Blizz wants to announce that it was intentional, then fine, it is what it is. But until then, it’s clearly a bug.

We aren’t playing OG Wrath, we’re playing a form of OG Vanilla. OG Vanilla did not flag you for aggro-ing flagged guards.
I aggro’d SS guards and did not flag, so, if nothing else, it’s inconsistent which should be addressed on some level. Hopefully in a way that removes flagging completely without hitting “/pvp”.
PVE server functionality changed from Vanilla to Wrath, including in Vanilla zones?
I didn’t play on PVE servers for Classic until Hardcore, so I don’t know how it’s been the past couple years. I just remember how PVE servers were on Retail from Wrath through MoP.
If only there was some kind of PTR or beta they could have tested this on

I didn’t actually die but I took a little trip in swamp of sorrows and got flagged (there are a lot of level 35 scouts there). No horde around luckily, here’s a clip of someone who wasn’t that lucky however:
the player PS kills here is likely someone who got flagged by one of these scouts.
