I would like to make a request. When I play your game my carpal tunnel acts up. If I’ve played for 4+ hours in a day, or multiple days in a row, my wrists ache in pain.
I’ve recently been playing Fallout 76 because it’s integrated controller support. When using a game controller, I don’t have any pain. I have even been playing more ESO for the same reason.
Could you please add integrated controls for game pads? I realize they will not be nearly as efficient for raiding as controllers, as you’re limited to 11 keys. For grinding or questing, this would be enough.
I also know there are mods out that emulate controller pads, but they are clunky and don’t integrate well. In ESO, when I need to switch to using the keyboard/mouse, I can put the controller down on my desk then lean forward and start using the keyboard/mouse. When done, I pick up my controller and play again.
I am sure I am not the only person who suffers from carpal tunnel. Adding this support to your game would greatly improve its allure – and could possibly support the port to console.
There are already addon’s that allow you to use a controller.
This game isn’t compatible by default due to classes needing far more buttons than a controller has normally.
You are going to be the weakest person there if you use a controller. Most classes have far too many buttons needed to be efficient. Will you hit your main spells/abilities? Sure. But not them all.
I already mentioned the problem with the addons. They do not integrate well, and completely take over your UI. You cannot put down the controller and react to a ‘oh crap’ situation by moving to the mouse and keyboard.
I just logged into my 115 unholy DK. There are 8 buttons I use in every fight (outbreak, epidemic, dark transformation, festering strike, scourge strike, death coil, death strike, apocalypse.) Add in death grip and AMS, and you have enough of a toolkit to quest. If you have the down arrow control on the keypad act as a ‘shift’ you could map another 10 keys, giving you the entire suite of spells.
I’m not suggesting using controller for raiding, BGs, or intense fighting. This is for questing…running to another location…etc. Mods won’t work for this, as when the fit hits the shan, you can’t just set the controller down and use the keyboard/mouse. This is what I do in Fallout76/ESO today.
If the controller was integrated as a ‘keyboard mapping’ alternative you could easily do this.
Thanks for your reply and your suggestions. . It helps to illustrate the problem here.
Actually a controller isn’t as bad as many think. You can use one of your bumper keys as a modifier like you use shift and control. The biggest clunkiness with the controller is interacting since its not supported unlike games that support it you get the options to hit A or X to interact fluidly or as the OP said be able to still easily use your keyboard and mouse along with the controller. Things like getting your bags, or quest logs or LFG or even chat box is not fluid with a controller as it isn’t with most games that is why the controller support allows you to switch back and forth when needed. As far as abilities you can map just about all to the controller and use them just as you would keybinds without much issue, the main issue is interacting with everything else.
Accessing bags or needing to use an item on a quest mob is a great example of when you need to be able to put the controller down and click on something with a mouse.
Clicking on something with a mouse, even a few times a minute, is not a problem. I can web surf and facebook scroll for hours without a problem.
The problem comes from hitting the same keys (WASD, 1234, QERZCVF) again and again and holding my hand in exactly the same position. Even being able to use a controller to handle travel time from one quest hub to another would be a huge savings.
The question is, how much work would be involved for Blizz to allow this? I would think it would be fairly easy in the grand scheme of things.
cant you macro some of those 8+ actions to one or two buttons/keys? I know I have 4 on one of my macros, how many buttons does a new PS4/Xbox controller have?
The Controller mod has a clever way to add more buttons. If you click on the bumpers, it lets you remap the other keys, giving you enough keys to cover your entire suite of spells.
The issue comes from that it completely takes over your UI. You can’t put it down to easily search through your bags. You can’t click on that one non mapped spell that you never use.
That’s not the mods fault. They did a stellar job. It’s that the controller is not integrated into the game.
Aye, I’ve seen it. Think Bellular did a video on it.
I don’t remember how FFXIV did the controller mapping, as I never tried to play it with one. I only recently even got a controller for my PC. MH:W with keyboard/mouse was awful.
The Xbox controller is what I use for Fallout76/ESO.
There are the following buttons
A, X, B, Y
LB, RB, LT, RT
Double Window, Triple Line
Up, Down, Left, Right (Dpad)
This gives you 14 possible buttons.
You can also push down on the movement sticks for another possible 2 buttons, though that’s really clunky. Fallout uses that to enter ‘stealth mode’ which is about the best you could do. A self buff that you don’t want to use in combat.
There are a few buttons you will always want to have available. Jump is traditionally mapped to A. You will want an ‘escape’ button to pull up the menu.
I had used a controller and it was pretty smooth but to bring your point for example on my pally I didn’t have redemption mapped on the controller so to get to it I had to hit the button or release my cursor then hit my redemption then relock my to my controller so I can use it again. So I understand your pain in that and your right if they integrated it you could simply just grab your mouse move and click to the spell then carry on with that you were doing.
They’re also essentially merging Xbox with the Windows PC.
My PS4 controller fits my hands better than an Xbox controller does any day though. Unfortunately, to get it to work I’d need third party software unless it’s a Steam game.
LB as my shift modifier and RB as my ctrl modifier
L2 as my jump and R2 as my tab target
my main use all the time buttons like AS, Con, Hammer, Judge, shield, HoL as the main no modifier keys uses the R3 and L3 the rest of my heavy used offensive skills under my shift modifier and then my defensive skill under my ctrl modifier.
Once you get use to your key map placement it really isn’t that complicated this is just to use for abilities and movement.
I don’t know why people keep spreading misinformation regarding the use of controllers, there are more than enough button combinations to allow you to play this game. Classes in Final Fantasy 14 have more abilities than WoW and you can most definitely use the ps4 controller.
I played that game for a couple of years and played with both kb/mouse and controller ( it’s cross play, you can play the same account on ps4 and pc if you have the license purchased).
Example:
X- Interact
O - cancel
Square- available
Triangle- Jump
L1- Tab left
R1- Tab Right
L2-X
L2-O
L2- Square
L2 -Triangle
L1- O
L1- X
L1- Square
L1-Triangle
L3 and R3 (Joystick press)
R1- O
R1- X
R1- Square
R1-Triangle
R2- O
R2- X
R2- Square
R2-Triangle
Hold R1 and R2 and press (square, triangle, X or O)
Hold L1 and R1 and press (square, triangle, X or O)
You can even set it so that when you have access to a different bind when you say Hold R1 and R2 and X you get different binds ( if you press R1 before R2 you get a different bind/action bar than when you press R2 before R1 even though you are going to be ultimately holding them both)
You also have the touch pad button that can be used a quick menu as well as the start button for main menu.
Personally, I wouldn’t play WoW on a controller but please stop pretending like a controller just can’t work. It’s been proven that it can, even in high end content (Savage raids which are equivalent to Mythic raids). I had over 30 binds when I played FF14 ( paladin tank).
Typing while using a controller was the only issue, but then there is voice along with the fact that you can still use a keyboard with a controller. (Edit for typo)
I actually pvp better with a controller mainly because back when I used it I was still a major keyboard turner and clicker so when I tried the controller and used it in pvp I was so much better.
I am all for adding more options. However I am curious how WoW would even possibly work with a controller? I am not trying to be confrontational or anything but am genuinely curious. WoW is an MMO where you have far more abilities and talents than a lot of other MMO’s I could see it working for something like GW2.
Before posting this I decided to look through the comments others have posted just to see what other folks had to say.
This was an interesting point. I guess it would then be a matter of how the individual set up their button mapping so that it was comfortable for them. I hadn’t really looked into it that much as I admittedly didn’t really have much reason to. I just always thought that WoW simply would have too many abilities, etc. to make it feasible. How does one interact with bags and inventory items then? I wonder if the analog sticks could be made to simulate a mouse?
The way D3 handled things on console was that most of the things that were previously handled by a mouse were handled with an analog stick. But I expect that would require specific coding to make work in WoW or via an addon?
