Hi there.
Will I need a VPN and if so can someone suggest one? I am only there for 24 hours but still need my fix. I currently have PIA but am reading conflicting messages online as to if it functions there or not. Would be great to hear from someone with a recent experience who can say what they did or if they know.
Thanks!
Six years ago I got permission to play on the US servers while staying in a City named Ningbo, China which is about 3 hours west/sw from Shanghai, I had to go through Customer Service and prove who I was but I was there for a month and not just a layover.
Not sure if they can verify it’s your account it being just a 24 hour layover but even so the only thing I could do was put items up on the ah and even then I would get disconnected every few minutes due to extreme lag, Maybe they’ve improved now; All you can do is ask CS and see.
Good Luck and Safe Travels.
It may or may not help with lag, but it will not prevent your account from being flagged for logging in from somewhere that you don’t normally log in.
If you have a smartphone, attach the mobile authenticator so you can verify that it’s you logging in.

I agree with Ekon. An authenticator is your best bet to prevent a lock out or at least minimize them.
Blizzard allows you to play from anywhere you want really. You don’t need permission from them to play from China or anywhere else. But if your account suddenly shows up somewhere else, they may lock it to keep it safe.

China has rules on what is allowed to come into their country through the internet (YouTube is banned totally and some of Warcraft’s content isn’t allowed from what I hear), So that’s what I meant when I said getting permission, To me with the lag it wasn’t worth it to play, only to put items on ah.
You know the saying “When in Rome do as the Roman’s do”? Same applies to China.
The account locks generally come when you appear to be hopping from place to place, against the laws of physics. So if you are in New York, and five minutes later, you log in from China. Just not humanly possible. So taking a long flight to China, then logging in shouldn’t flag you at all.
If you’re using a VPN, then make sure you always use the same path or tunnel. That will reduce the chances of a lock, as each tunnel generally takes the same (or similar) paths each time.

Thanks for all the replies. I am not worried about the WOW aspect and I have authentication more concerned with being locked out of US servers due to the firewalls and strict internet policy in China. (Since I am going to be simply logging in from a hotel, or whatever)
Appreciate the responses
