Playing Classic WoW and Realizing

I feel like some SOM servers are dead because you literally have 3 versions of classic competing against each other…

SOM isn’t for me. After a year the servers shut down and you will have the option to transfer to a regular classic server. Why would I waste my time on temporary changes?

Equity is a good thing. We’ve all seen players use guilds to gear up, then leave. I rally can’t see a fault in this.

PL does nothing to prevent that.

And if equity is what you want the logical conclusion would be to remove premading altogether. Have all content as random group, there we go everyone is one a perfectly even footing.

I agree with this.

I don’t think a lot of people realize how much effort goes into making a new raid. One of the stated reason they introduced LFR was that they were finding it hard to justify so many resources going into content that hardly anybody saw.

That said, they have a real opportunity with retail. They can reset the timeline and try their best to blend the Classic and retail audiences. You already have a template for it in FF14. Of course, this would probably require them to bring back one or two of the old guard, for Activision to go back to being hands off, for Ion to realize he’s over promoted and to step back down to raid design, and a lot of other things.

PvE content was designed around having groups. Battlegrounds were not. I was also referring to equity when it comes to loot. Personal loot outs everyone on a more equal footing when it comes to getting loot from runs. Since you can choose your loot spec, any loot you get will be usable for the spec you choose.

It really is vastly superior.

One of the biggest problems with personal loot is that it removes a lot of the incentive to stick with a raid group or team if they start to struggle, for any reason.

It says a lot about your mindset that you consider “using guilds to gear up, then leave” a good thing you can’t see a fault in.

I’ve seen a lot of players gononce they geared up. Gear was funneled to them.

I’ve seen others leave when an item drops that they felt entitled to.

I suppose disloyal players will be disloyal regardless.

Nah, personal loot definitely made it much more common. Going from having to generate the points or move along the list or whatever to being able to get loot immediately, your first night, regardless of how you perform or treat the people around you has a substantial effect.

It’s not a radical statement that if you remove any sort of evaluation that has to occur before you get paid, people try less, care less, and give less effort.

Yeah because all the new changes in retail brought in so many new people… /s

I suppose we’d see more loyalty in guilds in Classic… But that wasn’t my experience. I lost half a guild because our main tank got bindings before a DPS. The rules were followed from the start.

I get that some people like a game so much they seem to enjoy redoing it endlessly. But the question is how many? If there are so many who want to do that why is SoM failing?

SoM is doing better than I expected. I didn’t expect to play it myself, yet I have fun with it whenever I have time.

I’m not one of the people who want to replay a game over and over again. Replaying it once every 15 years is more my style. But I have no problem with those who want to do it. But when I read about SoM on the forums the message I get is servers are already dying due to low population. Only blizzard has the actual numbers but it doesn’t seem to be successful.

They are just releasing tweaks, changing classes and models and mechanics. The design doesn’t change very often. It is still a weekly virtual community gathering that rewards mastery of the game with virtual social status. Innovating beyond the “meet n times a week for few hours” is what is needed but its hard because that is the proven way to maintain subscriptions.

It’s vastly superior for random groups

It’s not vastly superior for guild runs, which is of course why none of them were using it until they were forced to.

I totally agree with everything you said

You obviously didn’t read his entire post.

You know what I miss in retail WoW? That table top RPG element that Classic brings. I actually enjoy going into town and stocking up on things like ammo or ankhs and symbols. Or being the teammate that has spare ammo in their bag for the Hunter even though I’m playing a Priest.

Shh. Let people enjoy things.

totally. Like, the lightning effects in darkshorwe, the sandstorms in tamarins, or the moonlight in storm wind or evening light…its not in game anymore. And running everywhere is INTENSE. It’s so hard, but way more rewarding. And the talent trees should never have been abandoned

This is really where it’s at.

The current Devs are maintaining a AAA title (poorly imo) but they’re not capable of creating one. They’re just not at the same standard as their 2007 counterparts. So, for all the change requests and good ideas people claim they want, good luck getting this Blizzard to deliver any of that at the level of quality reminiscent of the original game.

More likely their efforts will lead to more bugs, more unintended game breaking consequences, and more disappointment. Which is just as well Acta/Bliz is cost shy and probably won’t attempt anything ambitious.
