I was sitting on my couch scrolling my YouTube feed and saw that pop up. I just kept neurotically repeating, “What? What? What? WHAT???” while my cat stared at me like I was a crazy person.

We’ve been doing live reaction in the Discord and everyone just kind of collectively blinked.
After so many posts, so many forum threads, so much asking, so many theories and concepts on how it could be done, should be done. After so many suggestions to Blizz on how it could benefit the game, the players, be profitable for them.
I finally had given up on it when they didn’t announce it at all for the three expacs initially.
Does it involve the World Tree?

Now I have to spend the next year and a half hoping and praying and bracing for the inevitable disappointment that housing will never live up to Wildstar. But… my god… if it did…?

Honestly I thought the teaser at the end was for some kind of housing sim spin-off game.
I believe there is room for it to be something adjacent to a highly requested feature the players have wanted for the entire existence of the game.

It’s a little too late, at least for me. They really need to work on building back up their server communities and condensing servers altogether.

If this really is housing, I’m of two minds: on one hand, I’m super pumped that one day soon, I might finally be able build my own live-in smithy for my tauren, a lab for my dracthyr, and for guilds to be able to have cool, customizable places to carry out their stories in! I know the pain of searching the world for suitable proxies, ha ha.
On the other, I’m a little worried about public RP/walk-up. I remember trying out ESO and FF a couple years back, and the primary reason I wasn’t really able to stick to them long-term was the distinct lack of that sort of random public RP culture there. I couldn’t help but wonder if housing being a thing was a factor.
If anyone here has the time or inclination to assuage my fears, please assist; I wanna be 100% excited about it with everyone else!

Depending on how it’s done. It very well could end alot of public walk-up rp in cities. But let’s be honest. It’s not like it’s thriving. If the lots are publicly accessible though, certain popular plots will become the new go-to for walk-up. But I would still rather have the options to do like you said and build custom environments tailored for rp rather than hunting for them and striking out.

If there were neighborhoods, we could do walk up there. But it doesn’t need to actually end. On SWTOR if you wanted walk up, you could go to one of the stations or an event.
We would have to be proactive, is all.

In my experience FFXIV had open air RP in Uldah on Mateus, and events in housing areas too–it might just have been your server. ESO doesn’t have much because of its server structure, it is impossible for RPers to “find” each other randomly when there is only 1 sharded server for the entire playerbase in each region.
It could have a bit of a negative effect in making public areas emptier, but on net it is probably a good thing for RPers to be able to make their own spaces.

what if blizz puts in gold sink property taxes and home insurance and then another dragon destroys part of stormwind so the insurance pulls out of stormwind and you have to buy weird goblin insurance that has insane rates you cant afford
