All the garrisons shared a similar map, with a similar layout, and in the same area. At the start of WoD, there were issues with the instance server crashing and being overloaded.
So like FFXIV where only a select few get a house. I’m sure that would go over well with WoW.
Other games don’t have millions of players, servers have their limits and throwing money at them doesn’t fix that.
There would be mass riots. Billions would perish.
My guess is it’d work more like SWTOR, if anything: instanced private areas with access via a public board or personal teleportation item that you can invite friends to. Hopefully without the downsides of SWTOR housing, which is…literally everything else, honestly.
Honestly, I don’t think housing inherently needs to foster social connections regardless, it can just be a fun outlet for creativity and maybe tie into profession stuff - like gardening for herbalism, fishing in a backyard lake, building a kitchen, setting up an enchanting station, etc.
It’d be a feature that quite a lot of people would happily spend hours investing in, collecting for, etc. At this point even the most hardcore gameplay focused MMO devs know how popular slice of life features are.
Player housing in other games is generally always in the same location.
No, you miss my point. Do you understand what sharding is? Where you can have multiple examples of the same area but with different people playing in it? Or layering, as was done in Classic. There would be as many shards/layers created as were needed to provide housing on a server. No one would miss out.
What does it matter how many players the game has? You keep bringing up servers and I keep telling you that server technology has advanced since the earlier days. You need to think outside the old-fashioned box.
The Swtor version would be best. Simple instance, can give anyone access(or everyone) the player wants. Easy to add new themes in the future (based around different cities or zones).
If finding the space to allocate playerhousing is difficult, how about something similar to
the D&D spells Mordenkainen’s Magnificent Mansion, or Demiplane, but as an
ability that entire warband has access to.
Personally I wouldnt mind of the Garrison was brought back to life…since it does alot of what playerhousing should do.
At the most, they would have preserved the integrity of the game.
I have written out a bloody blueprint for them several times that includes monetization!
My personal opinion is what is holding them back is two-fold.
First, Ion can’t conceive of something that engages players longterm solely based on expressing a character’s identity as opposed to his endgame treadmill.
Second, a lot of player expectations are ridiculous within the limitations of WoW.
I used to think this too but then I started looking at toys like the beanbag chairs, tents, pillows and other objects we can place. Some of what people are asking for may not be 100% outside the realm of possibility.
I should have explained better but I was talking about the free placement of the items. I normally see people wanting the ability to freely place items instead of them being predetermined like with the farm or garrison. I used to feel that the predetermined was the only way that WoW could held housing but seeing the toys made me think differently about it.
With a few changes and additions I feel the garrison system could work for player housing and that thing was massive. How big did people want the housing?
Ya it might happen in the expansion after the last titan but dont expect it in the next 6 years.
Meanwhile GW2 players are through the roof with their next expansion which has… player housing. And seeing how GW2 did mounts, and fishing in a great way and worked on them every expact i think player housing goinf to be a hit over there too.
So out of the 3 major mmos gw2, ffxiv, and wow, wow is currently the only one without player housing…
I can live without player housing. One downside of Garrisons was how they took people out of the main hubs and made them prefer hanging out in their garrison.
