Player housing in World of Warcraft has been a topic of much discussion among players. While it hasn’t been officially implemented, let’s explore some reasons why it could be a valuable addition to the game:
- Personal Progression and Identity:
A player’s home could serve as a visual representation of their journey throughout the game. [It would be more than just a collection of mounts, armor sets, or achievements; it would be a place to call their own. Customizing and decorating a personal space allows players to express their individuality and create a unique identity within the WoW universe.
WoW is a richly detailed world with diverse cultures, races, and factions. Player housing could enhance role-playing experiences by providing a space for characters to live, rest, and interact with their surroundings. Imagine a cozy inn for an adventurer, an elegant elven treehouse, or a rustic orc hut—all tailored to fit the character’s backstory and personality. Housing could foster social connections. Imagine inviting friends or guildmates over to your home for gatherings, celebrations, or strategy sessions.
Guild housing, in particular, could strengthen bonds among guild members and provide a central meeting point.
Now, I know there are those out there who also may have counterarguments which I also foresee. Implementing player housing requires significant development effort. Blizzard would need to balance this against other content updates and improvements.
The challenge lies in creating a system that feels seamless and engaging without disrupting existing gameplay mechanics.
As of now, as I see it, WoW’s engine may not fully support dynamic housing systems. Major changes would be necessary to accommodate player housing. Some argue that the current systems might not allow for a truly satisfying housing experience.
In summary, my fellow World of Warcraft players while player housing remains theoretical, its potential benefits—personalization, immersion, and community interaction—make it an exciting prospect for WoW players. Whether it becomes a reality depends on Blizzard’s vision and technical feasibility.

NB4 “it’ll never happen” even though Ion has said in two interviews it’s something they’re working on.

Yes, and that is very true what you said that it may never happen. I remember a developer panel from BlizzCon who said player housing will happen between “No and Never going to happen”. However, we can only hope and dream that this may change one day.
I didn’t say it will never happen.
I was making a flippant statement about the people that say it’ll never happen in every player housing thread, despite the fact Ion said, twice, it’s something they’re working on.

sadly WoW stopped being a roleplaying game along time ago. It’s just a generic action game nowadays.

Warbands is already setting stone for war camps, a plot of land that you can decorate with tents and objects is practical for wow’s current systems if not a full house and leave room to make it bigger down the line. The war camp login screen they showed hints at this.
Its not likely to come till midnight at the soonest as it would be a box feature and WW features are announced already.

Oh No I did not mean you. I meant the developer from the panel said it would never happen. If I remember right there were many Boo’s from the crowd after he said this little statement. Please forgive me if you though I meant you.

They were adamant that Classic would never happen too. Wall of “no”. And yet…

Maybe it’ll calm down the goldshire inn on Moon guard.

So once there’s a big “wall of no” compiled for housing threads, it will then happen?
(just need to inspire a dev who is enough of a contrarian that he/she skunkworks up a proof that people are wrong?)

They were even more adament that classic would never happen and look where we are now!
(edit: whoops while I was being too wordy a little goblin beat me to it!)
Player housing has potential to massively increase player retention and engagement with virtually endless evergreen content.
Woodworking could be a new primary profession (or secondary if its used for modding your property) …
Old dungeon and raid content could drop kill trophies and the occassional cool furniture piece that was in the instance. Karazhan has some neat stuff.
Perhaps relevant factions have little shops that sell you assets unique to their lands. Or maybe you learn the recipe from them with the right reputation level. Maybe you even need reputation to buy a house on their land?
Music tracks could drop from all over too, kind of like what they did for the garrison.
There could be profession quests to get/build a workbench in your home (though please no AH or bank, just crafting!)
Houses could be account bound although it might be neat if each alt had their own house. Im sure my monk would like to live in Pandaria for example but my warrior wants to live in Grizzly Hills!
Perhaps logging out in your house could give slightly more rest XP then a regular rest zone.
Imagine too even little board games in the house that are little puzzles you can collect to kill time with.
Also would be nice to see your favourite pets in the house, and favourite mounts in the stables.
Lots of quests to unlock different stuff like a big ol’ fireplace or a small fishing pond too please!

If Midnight’s core features are player housing and open gear type mogging, I am auto purchasing. Let me mog leather at least.

Even if player housing was an addon pack you had to purchase separate from the base game, and keep purchasing the new asset/content packs as the system progressed… I would.
I wouldn’t be able to whip out my credit card fast enough. ![ ](https://d38bqls1q93fod.cloudfront.net/en/wow/images/emoji/twitter/sweat_smile.png?v=12)

That camp site thing is just Blizzard’s attempt to lay a thin sheet of distraction over a system which has you playing an account over individual characters, thus destroying the last bit of role-playing in the game.
(Oh yeah, now I remember why I unsubbed so fast after my return.)

I think they realized they were missing out on subs from private servers and realized Classic was an economical decision. I’m not sure if player housing has this equivalent. There are MMOs with housing, but would those players flock to WoW in the same numbers?

No idea. With some of those games the player housing is actually a big draw so even if it doesn’t bring in new players it might help retain existing ones.

Garrisons absolutely shredded walkup RP in WoD and I can’t imagine that player housing will be any different.
IMO, player housing is bad for the RP community.

Blame your fellow player, this is something they have been screaming for for years.

Yeah, public RP wouldn’t survive housing unless it was strictly small apartments (then I guess it might move ERP away from Goldshire and SMC Inn)
for my own personal edification, when did those interviews take place so that I can find and watch/read them?
