Picking a "main" for SL

No spec has ever been so bad it couldn’t raid or do the highest gear M+ Doesn’t mean it’s competitive AT ALL.

yeah race has a lot to do with it too

it’s nonsense to look at 8.3 class design to chose a main. Hold off, try a bunch of trial characters in the 9.0 prepatch, or in a late beta patch if you get in. You’ve got a bunch of fluffy bs answers about historical reliability, but history, while it influences the future, is in fact history, and classes have gone through major changes and reworks in the past.

Closed alpha/beta hasn’t gone live, and we have no clue how classes will look in 9.0 yet. If you want to go into 9.0 from an educated position, test classes in the prepatch, don’t burn your boost yet. I think it’s frankly nonsense that people are giving you hard answers to this. We have no information on what changes will happen, what abilities get removed/added, and what we get out of the covenant system.

A class’s history is irelevant to its future state. Do not look behind you, look ahead of you.

This may be true, but thanks to community perception, you won’t get invites unless you play a meta class with good gear and scores.

Keeping my UDK as my SL “main” and choosing Venthyr (Revendreth) as my covenant. My SL “alt” will be my Demo Lock. I may play with my BM Hunter a bit also since there will be more animals to tame!

Paladin. Because all my reps and everything are here and it’s not account wide.

Not sure, miss my priest/druid/monk, maybe if its alt friendly I’ll just play them all like legion.

Staying with DK for sure. I have played every other class to cap in other Xpacs (except Mage, I can’t explain my absolute disdain for that class) and always come back to DK. This is probably my 7th or 8th DK across the years and various servers I played on. Blood makes leveling a breeze so the only real choice is which DPS spec will I choose to run group content in. Switching back and forth between UH and Frost is like a game within the game at this point.

I play affliction, i get invites. It’s called a guild.

I don’t even think that there concept of a “main” really exists anymore. Well, maybe it does but it certainly doesn’t mean what it used to. Today it seems to be just the toon that you level up first.

In the past, there was a considerable time investment in leveling and gearing a toon. Not to mention other things like getting attuned for content. Today things like account wide stuff, easy leveling and catch up mechanics, you can replace your “main” without much effort at all.

As far as what I will level up first come Shadowlands, I still don’t know. I am currently taking advantage of the 100% experience boost to get my remaining toons to max level because it is ridiculously fast with heirlooms too. As we get closer to release and learn more, I’ll have to decide which seems like it might be the most fun.

Will have to see what is done with the game. I won’t switch over tiny nerfs or balancing things, but, I’m less likely to be if either:
A: Spec gets nerfed into oblivion
B: Becomes unfun to play

I was a SV hunter main for like 3 years… then they turned it into a garbage combat rogue (speaking of combat rogues).

How do I even know what I play will exist?

Nope. I’m sticking with mage unless something crazy happens.

Also, SL is a long time out. Why are you stressing about this now? Wait for the class changes to be announced at least.

Gonna stick to my paladin for Horde and mage for Alliance. If leveling alts and progressing them isn’t as restrictive as it was this time around, I wouldn’t mind trying out other classes at the cap again.

I can’t really decide, personally, until I see the class tweaks/changes.
I want Monk and Enhancement Shaman to come out as winners for my secondary toon, but what I absolutely want the most is for Arms to get an APM increase and return to MoP-styled Arms, the most.
And for rend to return, baseline.
