People seem to love to insult the lead narrative designer

What you might considered bad while others will considered it good or decent or modest at best or a failure. It’s not a one box fits all type of situation.

gotta quit giving them energy.

Okay? I think everyone is aware of that, but when a story is panned universally as bad…well, I’d say the issue isn’t entirely subjective anymore. Still subjective, but the results speak for themselves. I want Dragonflight to be good. Seriously, I do. I just don’t possess the confidence you do in the guy.

Until the final product releases we will see which side of the aisle is right or wrong?

I don’t have to be a painter to know when I don’t like a painting.

We will indeed. Can’t wait to have this conversation again.

Oh I’ll be looking forward to it.

The story has always been bad, stop acting like one guy ruined your childhood. If you trash SL but don’t give the other expansions the same critical treatment, you are being biased.

The story has never been amazing, but I’ve never been bored and/or downright appalled by it until BfA and Shadowlands. I like being entertained. Neither of those expansions were entertaining for me in any capacity as far as the story is concerned. I can put up with a lot of things, but trashing most of the best parts of WC and WC 3 story and lore totally and completely? That I cannot and will not forgive.

Someone should check to see what Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman are doing honestly at this point.

Maybe we’d get another Twins Trilogy quality narrative.

you can criticize something without being an expert at that thing

People complain about the story as if they were critiquing War and Peace or the Grapes of Wrath. This is pulp, like a Saturday morning cartoon, meant to be enjoyed and not taken to seriously. Enjoy it for what it is, and not what you want it to be.

You seem to whole heartedly cling to the delusional belief that if DF has any iota of quality to it, then it’ll somehow retroactively redeem Danuser from the utter failure of SL, the whole of which happened on his watch. It won’t.

I want to enjoy it for what it used to be, but can’t.

And no, don’t tell me Warcraft’s story was never fun. WC3’s story was. TFT’s story was fun. Heck, even WoD was fun narratively speaking. Zovaal crying about how nobody listened to him and Danuser telling us he 5D’d the Legion even though he’s a big crybaby ain’t fun.

This applies to any person working for Blizzard. It’s so easy for us to criticize when we have no idea how anything works, how much effort goes in to a final product, and how much of a struggle the individuals at Blizzard have gone through to make their visions a reality.

Even more wild that we attack Blizzard for every single thing we don’t like in the worst possible manner and then expect them to work extra hard to make us happy.

If you can’t discern the difference between expansions with unpopular elements and story lines, and an expansion that profoundly destroyed the very story itself, then you are just being dull.

When a company spends years making questionable decisions on multiple fronts, I think it is understandable for their customers to become irritated. Within reason, of course. Some do take it too far, and that’s obviously not okay.

Okay, Steve (I’m assuming this is him, given how defensive all of the replies have been). I know your feelings are probably hurt, but bro, you utterly wasted the only good character from Shadowlands in the first raid, you gave us the laziest retconning of every major WC event through its 30 year history, and you handwaved it all away with a Sylvanas redemption arc everyone and their dog saw coming from a mile away. And that’s not even going into the plot lines you simply abandoned.

Game development is hard, I know, I worked in game dev. I left for an industry that doesn’t expect 100 hour per week crunches for months on end, and actually pays me what I’m worth. You have deadlines, ideas you worked hard on and loved with your entire soul wither and die on the cutting room floor, the suits in corporate want whatever stupid thing shoehorned because the FOTM game at the time is doing it. It’s demoralizing, frustrating stuff.

But seriously, “it was actually the Jailer all along” was the worst thing to ever happen to this game. And the cliffhanger about some even more unknowable big bad gives me little hope for the future of this game’s narrative. We jumped the shark in Cataclysm (it’s Ragnaros again guys, but now he has LEGS), and somehow you guys just keep going.

Blizzard’s biggest problem, and this is across of their IPs, is that they clearly do not understand why people enjoy their games. They know we’re playing them, they can see the metrics, but they somehow always double down on the absolute worst aspects of their games while completely abandoning the things that drew us to them in the first place. Being a Blizzard fan is like being in a relationship with a narcissist.

Yo at least it wasn’t BFA story

You said it better than I feel I’m capable of.
