Yea, my tip as tank is, be polite, greet everyone… then explain how you want things done… As paladin tank, its usually i build agro fairly slow, they need to hit me a few times, and i cant taunt, so… then i state kill order skull, square, ring… moon is sheep, and if needed star for sap…
So far it have mostly worked, but BB have a very good comunity, been a few screw ups, but it is within agro marginal lol…
If you look at just those numbers on paper sure you have a valid point. But I tanked in vanilla and am healing now in classic.
I would much rather heal someone that is properly trying to mitigate damage and here’s why. Am I going to cast the same amount of heals over the fight? Very possible but the difference is the 2H tank is going to cause me to spam heals where as the 1h+shield tank is going to allow me to get some 5 sec Mana ticks in between heals thus saving water consumption and overall downtime.
Play your class the way it’s meant to be played. Tanks are not meant to ONLY hold threat but also mitigate damage. That is why they have been given the nick name “tanks”.
The OP’s issue is he cant or doesnt know how to hold threat. You prefer to heal a tank that has agro and takes slightly more damage or do you prefer to scramble and heal the entire party because the tank is inept?
I think the OPs rant is not only do people not CC they don’t give tanks time at all to gain agro.
I healed BRD full last night. We did it once full guild 0 issues. A DPS had to log so we PUGd a rogue. As soon as the pull happened he would run in and blade flurry. Constantly taking damage and died a couple times. I’ll let a DPS die if they’re being dumb and as a druid healer, youre probably not getting ressed so think about what you did as you run back.
Its not always up to the tank to hold threat but also the DPS to manage threat. Are there some bad tanks out there? Absolutely but most of the time it’s the balls-to-the-wall DPS that’s causing the problems.
Or just maybe, DPS need to chill a little? you can be the best tank in the world, but if dps don’t give you the chance to do anything, how are you meant to tank?
That’s not for you to decide. A good tank knows how much DMG they can take and will pull appropriately, doesn’t mater if you want to “DPS OMGDFJ”
As some have said OP, say what you want done, if they complain, explain to them, if they for some made reason don’t agree, kick um. if they want to speed run, they can make their own group
Well it’s also certainly not solely for the tank to decide. If the group thinks they don’t need CC but the tank wants to CC just for nostalgia’s sake it is entirely fair to replace the tank with one that is more inline with the other 4 group members.
If your tank is making you spam heals then they’re pulling too much or not swapping to 1h when appropriate, which is an issue with the player, not the build.
You’re saving “downtime” because you’re spending longer in combat. You are not saving any time at all.
Tanks mitigate damage BY holding threat. They already take way less damage than other classes (except druid) because they wear heavier armor, take defensive talents, Defensive Stance, Demo Shout, Thunder Clap, etc., if a monster is attacking the tank instead of someone in cloth or leather, damage is being mitigated.
I agree that tanking has not been as fun since its mainly just “pull everything so we can AoE it down”. I am cool with this but what I am not cool with is everyone expecting me to able to hold aggro like in retail. If I get resisted on my taunt, dodged or parried on a sunder, or resisted on my shout - its gonna be a not fun time when i have 6 elites running loose.
I’m definitely okay with the spell cleave but like - the spell cleavers need to kind of understand that threat is not retail threat.
Also drives me nuts when i get dodged or parried on sunders and I lose mobs because dps opened immediately. Again cool with that happening as long as DPS/Healers understand why thats happening.
The ONLY times healing has ever been difficult in this games entire existance is BC Heroics at first, Mythics at first and Mythic +'s
These dungeons are not difficult at all, nor are they stressful. Yes I want you to tank and spank everything up to your ability and my game isn’t going to break if I run out of mana every SO often. Thankfully I’ve had groups where I’m traded water and told “We’re going to beat the heck out of this dungeon!” to which I’m all for
your role as a tank isnt to gather everything clean up into a nice little ball and sit there and spam a couple spells to hold everything tightly. Your going to mess up, you’re going to fail, and you’re going to run around more than anyone else in the group. It’s your roll. Try your hardest, shut up, and if one wanders grab that one to the best of your ability. If classes have them locked down dont worry about them and move unto the next threat.
And if your healer requires help he/she is your top priority to keep alive out of everyone. Let everyone else fail maybe they’ll learn the next time around in another group.
YOU as the TANK need to show the most patience of them all because your role changes depending on who you have in your group. We dont need to strategize, the content is easy enough to just tank and spank it,
Allow your healer to set the flow
Your job as a tank is to set the direction
and your DPS will fall in line if those two conditions are met
You can easily tell what kind of run it’s going to be 3 pulls in to learn from it and act accordingly. Nobody is expecting you to hold aggro like in BFA or other games, all we’re expecting you is to try to do well. It’s a 15 year old game and these are one of the many many many things that made vanilla/classic horrible until if it’s ever balanced, you’ll just have to deal with it.
If I’m tanking a pug and the dps doesn’t want to work as a team, I just leave and find a new group within 5 seconds as they sit in lfg for 30 mins or more.
You don’t need to be CCing in the leveling dungeons.
I think the biggest problem I’ve run into with groups is elitists who come into the group then immediately start telling everyone how to play, what to do, how to min/max, etc, etc.
Like this guy got mad at me because I didn’t drop 4 totems every single trash pack and he wasn’t benefiting from them either.
Then I’ll have people come into groups, rip aggro every single pull, almost die every pull, then at some point they get called out then they quote the damage meter… If this isn’t the most retail mentality, I can’t think of anything more. It’s embarrassing to even be playing the game with these people.
Mark things, explain how you do things at the very beginning. Any lip, leave group before you even start. I don’t understand this concept of anyone else BUT the tank dictating how or what to pull, short of the tank not having experience in the instance or raid.
Find a chill guild to run with that will let you do your thing.
Trust me on this I had max level character on Vanilla without doubt before you were even born. So don’t bring this high level low level argument here, it is the person who plays and writes counts here not a character on an online fantasy game.
Thats not retail they did that before. I dont know what people use now being a healer but Recount used to be the universal “sheit prover” back then
Because tanks were horrible in Vanilla and are in Classic. But it’s not the fault of the player it’s the fault of the game and vanilla crappiness at the time that we know better now
Toodles, as a healer I’m fine with you leaving, We’ll be just fine without out and we’ll make sure to tell them exactly that this X name baby raged quitted
