PC reboots everytime I log into WoW (Kernel-Power)

Im having some issues with running WoW on my computer. Every time I go to log into World of Warcraft, I click “Enter World” in game, and right after the world loads, the first fan on my video card kicks on, and then my PC immediately restarts. No BSOD, No Memory Dump, Nothing. Just instantaneous reboot.

My boyfriend looked at the Windows System logs in Event Viewer and at the time of every crash/reboot I get a “Critical Kernel-Power” error. The error description is below.

Again, no memory dump is created when my computer restarts (So we cant use a memory dump reader to check for possible error codes since there is no dump) and it reboots automatically, despite having the Automatically Restart checkbox unchecked in Startup and Recovery settings.

When the PC reboots, all the fans and lights in my computer case turn off for about 2 seconds, then turn back on and the PC boots. The strange issue is, World of Warcraft is the only game that gives me this issue. I can run other games like Elder Scrolls Online and Borderlands 2 at max settings without any issues. There are no apparent signs of overheating either upon reboot. I have tried a complete uninstall/reinstall of both the Battle net launcher and WoW, twice, as well as deleting cache files. all to no avail.

System Specs:
Case: Be Quiet! Darkbase 700 Mid-Tower Case
Motherboard: MSI Z97 Gaming-5 ATX Motherboard
CPU: Intel Quad Core i5 4690k @ 3.5GHz
Graphics Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB
PSU: Sunbeam Comet 680w Dual-Rail Active PFC
Operating System: Windows 10 Pro
HDD: 230GB SSD for OS and 1TB SATA for Programs
Keyboard: Logitech G910 Orion Spark
Mouse: Logitech G502 Proteus Spectrum

The graphics card is practically brand new since it was replaced about 2 months ago right before Christmas, and my OS was reinstalled about a month ago when I got a new PC Case. All other components are probably 4-5 years old. I honestly cant remember the exact date.

Hi Pamellyn

Let’s try running a stress test benchmark. Download Superposition here:

Set the load screen preset to 1080p Extreme.

It looks like you get as far as the character selection screen. Down in the left corner of that screen is the Menu button. Go to System > Graphics - click the Recommended button. Do the same on System > Advanced then while on that pane change the Graphics API to DirectX 11 from DirectX 12.

*Hit the Apply button on both panes to save changes

Changed graphics settings to recommended and set to DirectX11 within game menus, no change. Still rebooted upon login.

No crashing issues running the benchmark test.

Results:
2489 Score
FPS Min: 15.29
FPS Avg: 18.62
FPS Max: 21.18

GPU Degrees C Minimum: 33.0
Max: 72.0
Max Utilization: 100%

GeForce Driver version: 418.91

This is a bit of a tough one. Go to the wow folder and rename the WTF, Interface and Cache folders to .old (WTF.old - etc)

Do you have any overlays running? Discord - Synapse - Afterburner - those types of things.

No overlays. Only thing running is my Bitdefender Antivirus.

Renamed all the requested folders, still rebooted on login. :frowning:

I know this may sound strange but the issue as you describe it still sounds like the PSU to me. From what I can find your PSU is a (older) modular design with 2 12V rails.

If yours is made like the duals I’ve used in the past then motherboard and cpu power from rail 1. Make sure your 1060 is plugged in to rail 2 at the least.

Good call there Clottibby. This does have the looks of a power issue on first glance. Can’t seem to reproduce it outside of Wow though.

Let’s take a look at a HWMonitor report here.

Download HWMonitor here:

Free download is along the left side of page - called “Setup - English”

Run that then click “File” along top and save data. Paste that on the thread here.

Just thought I would let you know that when your computer shuts down like that you will always get an error 41. If the computer is not powered down by Windows then it will do a check once you turn it back on and that error will come up.

In other words that error is nothing to worry about it.

Have you tried running a GPU and CPU stress test at the same time? If its a PS issue it should trigger It. The PS in the rig is 6-7 years old newegg stopped selling that model in 2012.

My boyfriend actually suggested it may be a failing power supply, but the thing that has us stumped is WoW is the only game this happens with.

Tried running the PCI-e cord to the video card from each rail on the PSU (only 2 PCI-e plugs), still crashes.

Here is my HWMonitor data

Tried running Prime95 alongside Superposition benchmark test. Still passed fine. CPU got a bit hotter but I assume that is normal with running 2 stress tests at once.

This voltage here is a concern.
Voltage 10 11.44 Volts [0x82] (+12V)

Run HWMonitor - it will show that voltage. It will show the min, max and average (called value). Run Superposition and see if the voltage is fluctuating on those readings.

Wow puts a lot of load on both the CPU and the GPU. Causing the PS to work harder. Most games have a very high load on the GPU and not a lot on the CPU. Along with the draw is not stable like most games. WOW has a lot of sudden increases in load which a failing PS would have trouble recovering from

One other thing worth a try here is a clean reinstall of the Nvidia using DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to clean the system.

When you install the Nvidia driver select custom install … only install the Graphics driver. No Geforce Experience - no 3D vision drivers. Uncheck those things.

Well this is new…so I started HWMonitor and then ran the Superposition benchmark. Right after the benchmark loads, instantaneous reboot just like with WoW…tried it twice and the same thing happened.

Does this mean my PSU be the issue? My boyfriend ordered a Power Supply tester off of Amazon and it should be here today so we can know for sure.

Tried reinstalling the Nvidia driver with DDU and custom settings. Still crashes.

Do you have a link to the tester? Some of them do not work well. or are hard to tell if the PS passed the test.

Yes it is very likely the PS . Computer supplies as they age get slower at bouncing back from a sudden load. Your PS is beyond it expected life expectancy which is 3-5 years, with your PS going on 7 its 2 years beyond that.

Here is the link to the PSU Tester my boyfriend purchased (Post isnt letting me include a link for some reason but i just added 2 spaces so the link cancels out)

https ://www.amazon. com/HDE-Power-Supply-Tester-PCI/dp/B005UZHB6G/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1550575004&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=PSU+tester&psc=1

Once we get the tester Ill post the results here.

The tester is a Ok one. In all honesty with the age of the PS I would have just replaced it anyway. A bad PS can damage the rest of the computer. The cost of a replacement 650 watt single rail supply is not a lot these days.

A corsair 650 is 45.99 USD 25.99 after rebate

I was actually looking at the Corsair RMx series 750w PSU. Wanted to have a bit of breathing room in case I add more parts later or decide to add a 2nd video card. I assume this would work just the same then?

(Sorry Im an idiot when it comes to computers. My bf helps me most of the time.)

No point in that big of a supply. SLI is basically dead they are only putting the SLI connectors on the high end cards. a GTX 1060 does not have a SLI connector and to put a second video card in you would have to buy 2 new high end cards. the GTX 1060 max draw is 122 watts. While Windows 10 does support multiple GPU’s its more economical just to get a more powerful GPU then stick another one in the machine
