Patch and update times.
I have a New Idea. I’ll bet no one ever thought of this one before at WOW support.
Please start your patches over night, or at lease early morning. But when I come on between 4-8pm ET and a update starts that plan ignorant. If Blizzard cared about their customers they would work around their customers peak times.
Blizzard has players all over teh world they cant satisify everyone 9x/10 if it says 8 hours its usualy done sooner 1 hour of down time tommorow is hardly a inconvienience.

Blizzard has researched and Tuesdays have been statistically demonstrated as the best time to do maintenance as it has the least amount of impact of players affected.
There are numerous factors that are taken into consideration. Primarily, WoW is an international game, not an US only game. So people in Australia are affected, people in South America are affected.
Also employee availability is taken into account. They want to do maintenance during the times where there are employees in the building to make it go faster and less prone to errors. And if something does go wrong, to have the manpower present to fix them.

No matter what time they did it someone would be upset! Be glad these days there is hardly any down time. When I first played in 2006 each Tuesday it would be down 4 to 5 hours. Now most weeks they just have rolling restarts.

The game is global. Specifically customers also come from Australia/New Zeland, but other places as well. The times were chosen to be cumbersome for the least amount of players as possible.
CS does not set these times though.

4-8 EST? Are you talking about the client patches?
Those install automatically if the Launcher is running. You just need to leave the Launcher running.

This is the main reason. There is no time when someone around the world won’t be inconvenienced. So they do the next best thing and do maintenance during their employee’s normal work day.
It’s been like this since launch, and it’s highly unlikely they will change the day based on “I don’t like that time”. But as always, you are free to suggest it in the General Forum.

Huh? Client patches?
Those are started as soon as they’re pushed to the launcher. If you’re offline at that time, they can’t do anything about that. Some things cannot wait to be pushed, and other things too large for hotfixes are held until the next maintenance.
Maintenance periods that aren’t on Tuesdays are emergencies that also cannot wait.
Tuesdays have always been patch day, and the mornings were deliberately chosen for the lowest affected population of the playerbase worldwide.

Come to think of it I did see a patch I guess tonight, but server downtime for that matter is usually in the AM, which is 1 hour tomorrow.
The client as others have noted could get updated at anytime, you just won’t notice it until your PC is on, and you log in.
