Patch 8.1 and Cross-Faction Roleplay

CrossRP brought a new life to the game that it is horribly lacking. I’m a big PvE player still and dip my toes into RP with friends. The addon helped us develop new ties to other players, host a few faction neutral events and witness to a few ourselves. We made new friends and new interactions through this and the fact that Blizzard has taken this away proves yet again how out of touch, or their lack of care for their player base they have.
To put it simply, the game is stale and quite bland. You struggle and fight so much for absolutely nothing. It is purely rng and not in the good way. Get loot? Find out it’s the same cloak and same ring that the rest of the raid just happened to get. Azerite traits are asinine and just another AP grind that I personally don’t want to do and don’t do.
Everything else seems to be just a re-skin with the odd new model here and there. Zandalari and Kultirans that we have been waiting months for (that I thought were coming on damn launch) we wont get for months more. This big hype about this recent patch was all for nothing. We don’t get the new raid till next month…only a brief glimpse of new content before it returns to the grind.
If they fix this addon I will be impressed…and maybe hopeful that they will listen. I however doubt it, they’ve stopped listening to us. Just look at Diablo. (Don’t you all have phones?)

TBH I use every single addon that they’ve made and they’re practically staples to my daily needs on WoW. Emote-Splitter’s code was used briefly by UCM when Communities were introduced, if I remember right.

They’re legit just a great addon developer and I think that really shows in how they made Cross RP so secure that the only way for it to “break” was if Blizzard completely locked down their own feature; no Terms of Service were hurt by it and, if anything, I think proliferating developers like them by allowing their work to exist as a part of WoW’s communities should have been Blizzard’s prerogative from the get-go.

Fantastic point. So how does this benefit gameplay?

First of all, I want to thank you, Tammy, for all of the diligence and love you put into CrossRP. When I first heard of it at the Tournament of Ages, I thought it was too good to be true. It turned out to be nothing short of amazing, a miracle by some accounts. It has since changed the way I roleplay and even play the game fundamentally. It renewed a dying enthusiasm for the game in general and has led to countless enjoyable times for me.
My heart and full support go with Tammy, their addon, and this thread. I truly hope that this was an oversight and that it is resolved in a timely manner.
If it was not an oversight, I hope it is reversed openly with every single addon creator that was affected by this change.
In all business surrounding selling of a product, the gaming industry included, one of the greatest factors of wild success of a product was in the customer’s ability and freedom to use the product in a way surprising or not intended. This is just as true for some of the most successful video games ( Classic World of Warcraft Included ). CrossRP is a fantastic example of a game feature used in a surprising way that had phenomenal impact on those of us using it. To the development team and Blizzard, I truly hope you will make the changes necessary that allows the use of addons, such as CrossRP, in World of Warcraft.
I could scarcely imagine roleplaying in World of Warcraft without a profile addon. The same has quickly become true for CrossRP. I hope the trend of forced direction in customer interaction and lack of transparency is quickly stopped. I hope you can work with your most talented community members instead of against them.

I am a long time RPer, but I’ve only played WoW for a little over a year. I came in at the end of Legion when the plot of the story was for everyone to band together for the greater good, to save the world no matter what differences we had as players be it race, faction, etc. Then we come to BfA where the plot goes back to the age old conflict of Horde vs. Alliance. While from a main story standpoint I’ve felt it was a step back, after all there were, what? Three expansions prior based on putting aside out differences to help each other for a greater goal? That being said, the main plot has done wonders for the RP community who now get to, in character, deal with their own internal conflicts when the factions they may or may not be a part of go from being tentative friends to hated enemies.

From a role play perspective there is so much that can be done, and that is why CrossRP was such an integral part of the RP communities through out WoW. It made so much possible, brought life to the game that was driven by the players. I really do hope that the effects that patch has had on the add on was merely a mistake and that is can and will be fixed. It would mean so much to us.

I have never played on a RP server, so I really have no idea what you guys are talking about. But it does sound kind of cool. When you say that you created cross-faction RP events, what does that mean other than just setting up a big pvp battle?

Sure, people walk around and talk to each other, sell stuff (either real or just pretending), that kind of thing. There’s lots of interaction that goes on. Sometimes there’s pvp as an attraction, like with the Tournament of Ages, but for a lot of people it’s fun to just wander around and watch people do stuff.

I very much hope that something can be worked out to bring back the functionality of CrossRP. I’ve had a blast with the faction neutral stuff like the Quilen & Cloud Teahouse and the Hearthglen group.

Some of it was doable without CrossRP, but I remember how incredible it was to log in and read Alliance TRPs for the first time. Knowing someone’s at-a-glances is so helpful for approaching. For instance, when I met a human DK in Hearthglen, I was able to recognize him as a superior officer in the Ebon Blade and treat him accordingly. It might not seem like a big deal, but just a few days prior I’d been RPing with a Velf through Thalassian only, and I didn’t realize until halfway through the conversation that they were meant to be RPing a Dark Ranger, which was really embarrassing.

Plus, with CrossRP, I was able to have this character discuss the war with that human DK. It’s a conversation that definitely wouldn’t have happened ICly with a non-Ebon Blade translator, what with its underlying friction of Alliance/Horde/Ebon Blade loyalties. I’d been hoping to find some more cross-faction DK friends to explore that division of loyalty as the war campaign progressed, and I’m pretty bummed that that will be a lot harder now.

To Tammy: thank you for providing CrossRP while it was viable! It brought me a lot of joy, and an excitement for WoW that I haven’t felt in years.

While some guilds/communities may have set up big battles using the add on, a lot of us have been using it just to set up events to meet with folks from the other faction. For example, the group I run- Waylight Outreach- is a cross-faction relief work community actively focusing on bringing aid to those displaced by the war! Likewise, folks can just use it to meet up and enjoy their slice of life RP as well, and anything in between.

It really is an invaluable addon for the game and RP communities, and allows for more varied RP to come through, particularly for those of us who have characters that are neutral to or actively opposed to the war (although I’ve read replies here from those who use it to make big battles and really enjoy that as well).

Tournament of the Ages is one organized twice a year on Moon Guard. Hundreds of players come to RP, people set up shops, have large banquets and then duels and games for hours. Cross RP allows Alliance and Horde players to communicate and RP with one another.

It means that you play as your character for your faction, and instead of just going at it in PVP fights, you type out detailed emotes about what your character does. The events also utilized the random rolling system that has been on WoW forever. Turning these events into D20/Dungeons and Dragons like battles with stat sheets and character flaws/abilities that would otherwise not be involved in just plain old mechanical PvP with in-game mechanics only. This RP/PVP allows for more immersive experiences, and CrossRP allowed for both factions to see eachothers random rolls where as before that, you had to rely on a system of moderators in raids to monitor the rolls and make sure both sides knew the results of their attack rolls etc.

In-game you can talk to other players of your faction through /Say and other public things like typing /e for a character’s emoting actions.

Cross RP acted as a translator for what you could type in a public channel, to be transmitted through a Battle-net community to be seen seemlessly (exactly like if it was in /say or /e) by another player on the opposite faction but also a part of that same community.

It was a new thing, and pretty niche, introduced only after the prepatch gave us the in-game Communities feature. We had a few really big events with over 1000 participants in the in-game community every day.

If you google Tournament of Ages WoW, that shows the absolute peak potential that this addon’s reached.

A lot of times there’s market or similar events. People sell (in-character, roleplayed, not in-game) items and services, there’s shows or concerts for entertainment, that sort of thing. And people like just wandering around and meeting others.

Another big thing lately has been what I might call ceremonial RP. A week or two ago there was a lovely Pandaren-themed harvest festival I attended with a tea ceremony and prayer offerings. There have been vigils over Teldrassil, and I’m sure in the future there will be/would have been over Dazar’alor and the like.

And of course for some people, they do use it for big battles. It’s a versatile addon.

I’ve long believed that having a faction language barrier was one of the dumbest things about WoW, and hearing this is just… well it’s irritating.
Bring CrossRP back, or, perhaps it’s time to teach everyone Common.

Can confirm. Used it myself on my goblin, Trazik. Extremely useful and immersive for a character who isn’t afraid to set up some cross-faction business contacts.

CrossRP helps for little individual stories. I roleplay a druid and he’s trained a couple of Alliance race druid.

This is one of the things I love about cross RP. You hand the community this tool and everyone has their own neat ideas about things to do with it!

Roleplay is what keeps me playing WoW, and CrossRP has been fantastic at keeping me roleplaying! This is a wonderful addon that has encouraged some of the best group RP I’ve ever experienced. Especially with the raging success it enabled at the ToA event this year…

Blizzard, I really hope you can find a way to re-enable this addon. CrossRP and it’s creator have added so much to this game!

As the role-play coordinator for one guild, and the GM of another that was starting to work on Cross Server and Cross-Faction RP, I found this add-on to be absolutely amazing! The amazing work that Tammy did on this add-on made a lot of things that were otherwise impossible to plan apart from in things like BattleNet and Discord possible in game.

There were honestly many more issues that needed to be “fixed”. One might claim that it’s against the ToS, but honestly, to my knowledge, with it’s built-in functions, it wasn’t.

Long story short, I give my heavy support towards Tammy and her amazing addon
