Paragon Cache Low-Drop Rate Mounts Aren't Fun

Remember when Blizz admitted that putting low-drop rate mounts in Legion paragon caches was a bad idea? Then they reversed course and put a mount in the Nazjatar paragon caches, then continued on into SL doing the same thing.

Grinding 10k rep for a 1% chance at a mount isn’t fun. It sucks. It especially sucks when it’s locked behind boring content.

For the love of god Blizzard, stop putting low-drop rate mounts in paragon caches. It’s a bad idea and you’ve admitted as much, so quit doing it please.

I was doing Korthia about every other day, but then D2:R happened.

The current paragon cache mounts have significantly higher drop rates than the legion ones btw

I’ve always thought that having cosmetics rewards from paragon caches was fine, but that the rewards should follow a fixed schedule.

For example, the first cache automatically gives you a pet, second a mount, third a toy, etc. until you get all rewards.

The way it is now is just unfair and unrewarding. You could get the mount from your first cache, or it could take dozens of caches, eating up countless hours of playtime.

They do seem noticeably higher in SL, but RNG is RNG. It took me dozens of Wild Hunt caches to get the moth mount, and I actually thought it was bugged for months because it was the only one that didn’t drop.

The legion ones especially should have bad-luck protection or some kind of fail safe. It is insane that people have had to grind literally hundreds of thousands, and sometimes millions, of rep for one mount.
I hear the SL caches are not as bad, but with how few world quests there are, I still feel it is not the best system. I am glad they are a little better though. The legion ones are horrible.

Blame Timeless Isle. That’s when the whole “1% chance for everything” nonsense came into full force.

The way rep worked in Legion (actually still does) is that when you max out the mission board - including argus - on all your alts and get all your alts exalted, you get a carpton of BOA rep from the mission board. That’s how people got all those mounts during Legion.

I ‘member.
I just laugh at how many times they just repeat the mistake.
But I guess they like the carrot of RNG a’ la paragon caches, putting said carrot there keeps them happy knowing there will be the collectors [there are a lot of 'em] that will keep engaging in the content.

And that is why I won’t do it. I’ll get exalted with my covenant, sure, but paragon is a dumb concept especially if the rewards are total RNG. As Hunter Thompson once said, “Learn to enjoy losing,” or like the computer in Wargames “the only winning move is not to play.”

I created a post on this topic three days ago: Mount from Supplies of the Archivists' Codex
I fully agree with your position. Paragon cache mounts are not a fun mechanic.

Still RNG, if it was 100% then cool or if they were BoE so they could go on the AH

You assume it’s a mistake

:exploding_head:

You just made a Blizzard developer’s salivary glands do a little ‘squidge’.

It used to be, you could get cool cosmetic stuff by doing a grind, or through RNG. One or the other.

Now, it’s RNG on top of a grind. I’ve been saying since they introduced rep caches in Legion that it was wrongheaded and insulting, but the fact that people do it without quitting en masse is all the data that Blizzard needs to decide that it’s the right way to go.

Army of the Light may be the worst. There are three mounts (color variations), and you can keep getting the same mount you already have instead of one you don’t have. (SL seems more technologically advanced in its coding because it doesn’t give you mounts you already learned.)

Unfortunately, the best way to counter the RNG was to save up BoA rep tokens throughout Legion and then use them (preferably on a human that was already exalted while having the Darkmoon Faire rep buff) during the double rep campaign between BfA and SL.

If Legion timewalking allows rep tokens to enjoy a bonus, then perhaps people can do something similar (but not as good) during Legion timewalking in the future.
