All their other specs are not really raid material, could be if people want to carry you, but once you get to Naxxramas and need to 8 tank the 4 horsemen… not having a taunt will be an issue.
Outside of raid, totally viable but mana will always be an issue.
Had a holy paladin throw on some tank gear and tanked Ony for us this week, was fun. Pretty sure he just spammed greater Kings over and over during phase 2 to keep threat, worked perfectly actually
Too much of their threat is reactive from getting hit, On alot of fights you’re waiting to taunt or tank swap or trying to keep pace with other tanks which is hard if you’re not getting hit.
Thanks for the reply. I’ve been thinking about what makes the pally so good as a tank and remembered I frequently used ‘hand of reckoning’, which was a taunt as well as a pull. There were so many ways to hold agro while keeping mana and health high that it was a delight to tank with. Do Paladins have ‘Hand of Reckoning’ in Vanilla/Classic?
Unfortunately, no. Their dungeon threat is almost entirely dependent on reflect damage outside of undead and GBoK spam (in raids).
Technically, pallies have enough to make tanking work. It just isn’t optimal and falls off hard after MC because raid gear doesn’t exist for them. No reason to really do it unless you’re bored.
The problem with Prot Paladins is that they’re essentially just worse Warriors. They’re fine while leveling or while AoE grinding but Warriors have everything so much better that no one will take a Paladin over a Warrior even if the Warrior has significantly worse gear.
People worship the ground that Holy Paladins walk on, however. If you want people to invite you to groups you’ll always get into raids as Holy. You’d be lucky to even get in 5-mans at 60 as a Paladin. Most people will just assume you’re trolling, and the ones who dont will still prefer Warriors and even Druids over you.
Do you have threat aura applied and salvation on ppl?
How much defs do you have?
Let’s say phase 1 to 2.5 might have to stack some defs 400+ till the high armor value from T2 in phase 3. Your spell damage will suck till phase 3. About 50 to 150.
When you get higher armor value your defs only needs to be 50. Reason you want to be critted on a hit on yourself to get a 30% block addition for the next 5 blocks. That works on boss fights very well. On multiple mobs switch gear up.
In T2 your spell damage could reach 400 to 700.
If you’re stacking AP you will not hold aggro. Now ret you will need a mix of stats.
SP you will be doing 200dps to 2k on aoe.
On single 150 to 500 dps depends on gear.
The buff aoe aggro works best in raids.
Just remember Paladin tanks isn’t easy. It’s easier to heal because itemization is easier to achieve and few spells. Paladin tanks you always have to be theory crafting regardless of what ppl say and always have to keep multiple armor/equipment sets to switch in and out of depending on encounters. Multiple ways to pull aggro best aoe aggro in the game.
Paladin tanks become stronger phase 3 to 5.
Paladin and shamans are very OP just need to think a little.
Paladin tank is very op in PvP as well. You could 1 vs 3 any melee class down. You could crush a mage and hunter on 1 vs 1. Weakness is priest any spec or healer reason it would be a draw.
What’s amazing is attitudes towards paladin tanks pre, then post-rerelease of classic.
Seems a lot of self-professed experts didn’t know what they were talking about and, as we knew already, it’s best to do your own thing regardless of what people think.
