Overwolf says there will be a way to opt out of ads, but that the majority of the ad revenue will go to the creators.
They also say that you can opt out of them collecting any data about you.
What makes you think Overwolf is lying about these things? Do they have a track record of lying?
From their website:
Will the new CurseForge app include ads?
Yes, with an opt-out. We want to make modding a legit profession, and we want to find ways for modders to make a living. With 70–80% of ad revenue going to creators and distributed based on mod usage, we want to look into incorporating in-app ads in a way that is not intrusive. You might remember the ads on the old Curse client, before the Twitch acquisition, so we’re thinking about iterating on that experience. But, in parallel — for those who do not wish to support creators, we’re thinking about ways of opting out. Clearly, subscription will be one of these options, but we’re also thinking about an opt-out without payment. Eventually, as we’ve seen with gaming apps, we believe non-intrusive in-app ads will support mod authors and help them invest more time and effort in their creations. That said — you’ll never see an ad in-game, just in-app. You’re definitely not going to see any ads inside WoW addons or anything wonky like that.
And even if they don’t follow through with this, there is usually still a way to block ads in these types of things.
I guess I just don’t get why people hate Overwolf. No one seems to really have a reason except to say they are bad. I mean hosting all the addons must cost some money, so doesn’t it make sense that they would want to protect their investment?
This is false. They addressed this a while ago and stated they weren’t going to make it obtrusive and would offer a paid version. So it won’t be much different than Wowhead.
Which I know everyone hates Wowhead, too. So I’m sure that’ll get backlash now that I’ve said it.
I’m not defending the insanity of this stupid decision in attempting to block other apps. And I know they’re notorious for their ads. But let’s not spread false information.
You’re still spending cycles to obtain the addon which you consider a form of payment. Blizzard’s prohibition is on requiring payment; whether or not the creator makes a profit is irrelevant. How is this complicated to understand?
how much would it even cost?
we are not asking for Blizzard to make all the addons, just a place where you click a button and it puts the addon stuff into the folder/ updates it.
if an addon seems shady Blizz could remove it from the “trusted” addons.
It would probably be fine if they offered a site as an alternative to the app (maybe just keep the old Curse page up), but the way things are looking you have to install their software on your machine in order to install/update addons with it. THAT is a problem, because that opens up the possibility malware installation, snooping through your files, etc.
I really can’t figure that out. It seems like one person said Overwolf is bad and everyone else jumped on the bandwagon. Kind of like the Wowhead thing or the curse client thing in the past.
Overwolf says that the curseforge website will still be there just like it is now, so you would still be able to use it to manually update addons, just like you can now.
