So is there a way for me to notice what’s going on? I’m still updated add-ons through Twitch and haven’t noticed anything different.
I believe nothing changes until Nov 17th.
Not sure if anyone has suggested this yet, but don’t use a “manager”, just install (you know, copy a folder) them manually.
That is the option for luddites who have next to no addons.
No thanks
Have read a ton of bad things about this client. Already am not a fan.
If there are any in-game popups whatsoever, I will not be using.
Completely agree that forced use of one client so they can monetize addons, is a breach of the ToS. Blizz should crack down on it. Hard.
Why doesn’t Blizzard just make there own app for downloading and updating addons? Seems like something they should do just to make sure no ones is trying to make a profit off of them.
There are no in game ads. You aren’t forced to use the app and nothing Overwolf is doing is a breach of the ToS.
It is in-game adds that i’ve seen complained about the most in other games.
If it works as well as twitch, I can update everything easily in one place, and my eyes aren’t gouged out by adds - fine.
I do think it’s fundamentally wrong to make players use a single service to keep their addons up to date though. That is absolutely a loophole in order for them to monetize addons that are free under the ToS. Not saying it’s great for the addon developers, but those are the rules of the environment they put their time into.
You can pay for an add free experience. Would be the same as making donations to the addon makers themselves. You want to be a freeloader?
Also the adds are in the client not the game.
press x to doubt
seriously though overwolf has always tended to be a bit of a trash client. I honestly was surprised they still existed untill i realised that most people install/boot up whatever then forget about it and the company has tended to collect user data and advertise
Doubt all you like. I already like the CurseForge app much much better than the Twitch app. You can easily set it to exit both CurseForge and Overwolf when you close the CurseForge app and it’s been confirmed nothing is left running in the background.
That’s what I will be doing just like I do with WoWHead.
“When you download our client and/or register, we collect Personal Data provided by you, such as your us ername, email address and profile picture . If you register through a third party log-in/ account registration service (such as Facebook, Gmail, etc.), we collect your basic profile information from such third-party log-in/account registration service and your profile picture .
We also collect Personal Data when you use the Services, such as games you played, language preference, referring site, pages viewed and the order of those pages etc, or contact us with questions or complaints. When you visit our Site and/or use the Services, we automatically collect your IP address, operating system, connected device, hardware details and other information about your use of the Site and/or Services . We can receive aggregated data containing impressions, revenue, video stats, as well as confirmation of user completions .”
still sounds like a trashy client that exists to collect your data. Sure you may not see ads yet with their client but I would rather eat glass than trust someone who wants my data to ‘share’ with other people. The whole sharing concept sounds to me like some kind of work around to say they don’t sell it.
This is why I wont do it. I will quit using add-ons entirely before I use this. I will quit WoW if that becomes unplayable. I hate how we’re just information quarries for these companies now. They make money off of my existence, I should get a cut. Period.
The overwolf apps have historically been giant psuedo spyware piles of bloat stuffed into an app jacket. With this in mind an alternative such as Ajour, wowup, or cursebreaker may be better for you TBH. Each one has pros and cons but they are far from overwolf’s traditional pile
cursebreaker is what i will personally be leaning toward because i will be using elv for shadowlands and it will be nice to not have to manually update that
You think Twitch doesn’t do the same thing.
We didn’t need to use Twitch before, Overwolf is trying to shut down all other options. That’s the difference.
UwU™
Well if nobody uses it they won’t make any money?
Actually they aren’t… they’re talking to the authors at WowUp and other addon managers to try and find a solution that works for everybody. But at the end of the day they own CurseForge and they get to decide how it’s used.
