Depends on how bad it gets I suppose, then again I don’t have more than 10 addons for wow at any given point so… I don’t really have a need for a client to update them
This is where I’m at - I use DBM and Details; literally two addons. Managing that by myself without the help of a client is quite easy. However it is a shame that Overwolf has claimed the management of addons because it seems that they’re quite a shady business indeed.
That could be as overwolf doesn’t run the curseforge backend as yet. That’s still in the migration process. Could be a month or so before that’s complete.
Glad you mentioned Spybot Anti-Beacon I was curious so I looked it up. I’m currently installing it. So thanks.
As i’ve seen this come up a few times in this thread - The UI development policy for addon is irrevelant to Overwolf blocking access for third party addon updater programs.
That policy is between Blizzard and the Addon authors and has no relevance in a discussion of how an addon site manages it’s traffic. While it has a threat of “legal action” in it since it’s inception Blizzard has never acted on it.
If Blizzard doesn’t like what an addon does it does one of the following
- Contact the addon author to politely ask them not to do thing Blizzard doesn’t like
- Ban the addon from even loading in the first place
- Alter the Lua API backend making what Blizzard doesn’t like it being used for isn’t possible anymore (sometimes in heavy handed ways)
Addon sites can have ads running on them and in fact have supported themselves for years on them (amoungst other ways of funding themselves)
I have over 120 addons.
I will never manually update them.
If Wowup gets shutdown, and Overwolf continues to be an issue, I’d probably just quit WoW and stick with ESO.
Yes, but if they own it they can do what they want with it is the thing. I am not defending Overwolf.
Mod Authors want to make something back for their time and I get that. But only CurseForge pays them for keeping their addons on their site.
I will definitely be using WAY LESS addons or even just ElvUI if that is the case. Tuk’s client for TukIUI and ElvUI is not so bad at all. Problem is not everyone likes ElvUI.
Bottom line is I will be learning to live with way less addons if I have to install them manually or only updating once a month…I dunno.
Honestly Blizzard needs to add in some more stuff into their default UI such as allowing people to MOVE all frames, option to get rid of them stupid Gryphons. Although Grypon Remover is a super SIMPLE addon to make. That could just be posted for free and only the .toc file version would need to be updated every so often for a major patch.
In this day and age there is no excuse for such a crappy default UI and its lack of customization options. They have THE WORST MMO UI I have EVER seen… /rant
So it’s easier and cheaper for Blizzard to not do customizations? It’s easier and cheaper for Blizzard not do demon hunters? It’s easier and cheaper to not do artifact weapons?
Why still do the game at all and just make something else that has little net loss, like making gambling machines for a casino? they would have saved them the trouble and money.
That’s what your telling me here.
…That’s like saying “a net gain, is a net gain, is a net gain”, or “a ball, is a ball, is a ball.” or “Bill Murray is Bill Murray, is Bill Murray”
… At this point, i just have no reason to think their will be a net loss since you can’t even tell me the number to have it to mean anything. I apologize, but you were asked about it 7+ times.
Wait, so you told me they won’t care if it’s a small amount… (and by the by. 0.01% is $70 million.) but then told me that they are going to ask why it’s needed?..
I mean if your asking somebody what your doing with that money, isn’t that still caring?
Also, what do you mean we went 16 years without explosion outselves to the risks and cost? I mean did WoD escaped you?
They pushed a game out when it’s clearly not ready. They took a risk to push it out early and it costed them their subs.
Oh yea, theirs no net gain to this… nebulous net loss that’s apparently nothing now. /s
I mean if your saying their has to be a net gain from that, why customizations exist? those themselves aren’t a net gain, so why have them if they have no benefit? Transmogs? They have no benefit to them. So why bother having those? Or those extra class abilities? Hey, how about Flying? Flying clearly isn’t a benefit or a net gain for Blizzard. Why we still have it around? Or the ticket system? Those aren’t a benefit and just wasting money for blizzard.
How much money are customizations making? How much money flying is making? how much money is the ticket system making?
You get the point. Those things individually don’t help to make money, but combined into this game, makes it a better product overall, and it what gives Blizzard their money, because people like good products. And by adding this addon manager and site, this will make WoW a better product.
Will their be problems? Yes.
Will people still be silly despite what the warnings say? unfortunately. That is gonna happen no matter what, but the rules is there to stop the honest people.
Will it make the product better for so many people who don’t like manual installing or Twitch’s app? Yes.
That happens way too often around these forums. People “hear” what they want and not what was actually “said”.
Exactly.
I used to do work for a water company and people would come in a complain to them about paying for water when water is actually free.
I loved the managers answer to that question. “Yes water is absolutely free. We are charging you to get it there”.
Personally I use very few addons because I have always hated having to deal with waiting on them to get updates after patches so they will work. I am fine manually updating what I do use.
A water company does not just transport the water. They also need to process it to be suitable for consumption and to stay that way all the way to the taps.
They might also be treating the sewage with the same company.
That is a lot of important services that do not compare to what overwolf does
When the addon site has a client that provides an in-game overlay, and the in-game overlay includes ads, that crosses a major line.
Twitch client still working for updates as of right now.
I was under the impression it would be disabled from yesterday.
The overlay can easily be turned off in settings.
From what I’ve read addons will be removed from Twitch on November 17th.
Maybe.
But the Ui development policy has zero to do with it and does not grant Blizzard any powers. There’s other legal recourse Blizzard can take here but the Ui development policy isn’t anything that lends Blizzard power it doesn’t already have.
As for the overlay. In the current alpha it’s turned off by default. You can set it so when you quit Curseforge it’ll quit both Overwolf and Curseforge leaving no overwolf processes running.
I thought so too until I saw this timeline on reddit -
Given the twitch backend hasn’t been migrated over yet and that this timeline places a full parity open beta at Nov 17 I expect the twitch client will keep running until at least then if not beyond then.
developing the game =/= paying for something thats unecessary, wont make money, and will just lead to problems down the line
so because i dont know hardware and bandwith prices and the salaries of the potentially dozen+ people they will have to pay for that means its not going to be a net loss?
no i said theyre going to question why theyre spending that money on a net loss, the amount is irrelevant to the fact its not a net gain
yes there is no net gain for them over this, the amount of positive PR they might get doesnt negate the monetary cost of an necessary expenditure. again actively developing the game =/= an necessary client. transmogs wont make money? try walking around any ff14 server and see how many paid for (they call them) glamours are running around then tell me it wont make money. go ahead, ill wait. they sell mounts too, how many do you see running around here or in ff14? tickets? thats your example? CS isnt necessary apparently lol
having an official addon repository and manager does not make the game overall better, just easier for certain players that use alot of/cba to manually update addons. in the long run its more trouble and money then its worth.
blah blah blah, nothing of worth was written by the OP
Disagree, I am more informed than I was before and have a starting point to do my own research.

Here’s a video detailing the Overwolf CurseForge client in its alpha.
A few points:
-
You don’t need registration to use it, so it’s semi-convenient on that front.
-
It’s an absolute memory hog. It’s like 400k+ MB versus the Twitch app’s 150-200k MB.
-
Overwolf’s privacy terms are extremely suspicious and you HAVE to install the Overwolf client to install this addon manager.
-
Overwolf still very much has the potential to pressure its competitors to shut down, which sucks because Wowup.io is just the far, far superior product.
-
Since it’s in Alpha there are at present no ads, so we don’t know how invasive these ads are or aren’t.
I’ll edit this into the main post to reflect this.
