Overwolf Client and Addon Management - PLEASE Don't Support This!

Myself, I will be seeking other websites that host addons as an alternative. I will never have overwolf software on my machines. I learned once the hard way when I was younger the mess that thing made of my pc. Never again.

The fact they are going against ToS can just end up having blizzard breathing down their necks.

Also? Thanks Twitch for giving people the middle finger and showing us just what matters to you too. Same thing that matters to Overwolf… $$$$$$$$$$.

Push comes to shove, I’ll drop majority of the addons I have, I don’t really need them. They where merely QoL improvements but I can return to how I used to play… bare bones with only DBM installed again.

I dreaded this day. I liked how clean the twitch app handled it once set up correctly, too bad they let us down too.

ToS is irrelevant since it got phased out in favour of the Battle.net EULA

Besides which the EULA is a contract between the player and Blizzard it doesn’t involve third party addon sites like Overwolf/Curseforge at all. The most that could be argued in a civil court is if Overwolf encourages players to break the EULA they have with Blizzard … which would be very difficult to argue since Blizzard specifically has a clause allowing people to use third party interfaces (aka addons) within said EULA

The Twitch app was a horrible bloated mess that I hated from day one. I still miss the original Curse Client.

The new curseforge beta strips much of the twitch stuff out. You just see a pane to select a game to update addons for and another pane for your wow addons. It’s quite clean.

We just need to wait for something to come up to host the addons, that is free. Forget curse.

I’m actually trying it too and so far it reminds me of the original Curse Client.

Most addon authors wouldn’t switch because they are making money from CurseForge.

Manually download and install your addons. Then you don’t have the problem of someone malware hacking the client.

No thanks…I laugh everytime I see this comment. Most people who have 50+ addons aren’t going to waste time installing and updating manually I know I’m certainly not.

sounds like overwolf wants people trading mods between themselves without using curse (or anything) as the middleman.

I think it’s important to realize here is not all of your addons will get addons. Each time I’ve run twitch or the curseforge beta there’s only a handful of addons to update. After a major expansion you might have a ton to up date say like 20 or 30 or so but you shouldn’t take the total number of addons as the number of addons you’ll have to devote to updating each time you do an addon update.

Yet in saying all that I can see the value of using an addon updater client. Me personally I have a process where I do both. I have most of my addons added as favorites on wowace , curseforge and wow interface. I get regular summary emails telling me what’s updated.

After a patch I usually have a handful or so of addons that aren’t operating too well (aka they might have Lua error or show unexpected behaviours). So first off I run the twitch client (and now the curseforge beta) , refreshing until I see no updates. Then I flick through my emails with a focus on the addons that are misbehaving to double check if the updater client has updated them.

It’s usually wow ace that has new updates that curseforge doesn’t yet. This can result in me opening downloading maybe 3-4 addon updates. I have the addons folder pinned to explorer so installing just opening them then dragging into the addons folder. Whole process takes about 5-10 minutes.

Except OW’s model isn’t considered “direct” monetization of the add-ons. Their model is monetization through the ads and access to the Curseforge Database API (not Blizz’s Addon API). The mods themselves are still free. Under Blizz’s current guidelines it’ll be tough for them to do anything about OW. That being said OW sucks and they can go lick a donkey’s &#$#*@.

Well, if they’re really doing all this shady crap (including trying to serve ads) then they clearly don’t want the users. But at the same time they seem to not want any other clients doing that whole mod distribution thing, which leaves distribution between players with no company acting as the middleman.

I have yet to find any evidence of that.

  • Doesn’t open any files outside of the usual stuff (aka overwolf folder , wow folder , windows executable related stuff , app data).
  • overlays are disabled by default
  • no overwolf named processes remain after you quit it.
  • no ads currently show in the client (this could be due to my Spybot Anti-Beacon custom hosts file)

If you have credible evidence of the technical details of how the data mining and or ad serving on the overlays work please share them. AKA file names of where data is saved , what ports data is transferred out on and to what IP addresses

I don’t have Spybot just BitDefender I’m not seeing any ads either. All I see is the Remove Ads link to the “Coming Soon” Subscribe to CurseForge $2.99 / Month for ad free. Pretty much the same as the original Curse Client only that sub was yearly.
