Overwolf Client and Addon Management - PLEASE Don't Support This!

Behold the legendary “Got busted backpedal”!

I doubt wowup.io will be affected, because they can just stop scraping curseforge and take data from github/wowinterface and they’ll be fine. But other managers that specifically pull from curgeforge only may get affected by this.

Worst case scenario, if wowup.io shuts down, I would advise folks to use Minion. Minion works with wowinterface, not curseforge. Unlike other addon tools, there’s nothing that Overwolf can do to Minion, as Minion does not interact with any of their owned properties.

This works fine if you don’t have over 100 addons

I think when he says open source he is referring to licensing

I would too but I have a feeling since there hasn’t been any word on SL and mission tables like past exp they may not update those addons…sorry to say there would be no need too really.

There’s no proof of that yet. It’s also easy to close the app when not using it. I guess some people will know the answer on Tuesday… just not me since the only thing I use is WowUp.

I’ve been looking into it and will probably be moving over.

The part you quoted is how they get around the no ads in game no adds in addons kind of language. Killing the app for too long kills it’s functionality… basically a soft ban if not left running. Had it for about 20 min with Aion and deleted it, spent a week finding bits and pieces of it and dealing with removing every aspect of it… will never allow it again.

Standard DH player that can’t read.

Until I see proof of a forced overlay I’m not buying it. When this was first announced before I knew anything about Overwolf I installed it to check it out. I had no problems closing the app or uninstalling it.

It is continuing to be developed and there’s no proof it’s shutting down yet.

Sure the program will still exist, but most of the addons it gives us are pulled from the CurseForge repository. Thanks to Overwolf the CurseForge repo will soon be closing its doors to third-parties, such as wowup .

So there’s no question that wowup will continue to exist. The issue is whether it will have access to up-to-date addons.

There’s no proof that’s happening yet.

“To be clear: nothing is changing, and we’re not turning off access for any 3rd party managers. We’re just looking to have a discussion and find solutions.”

Their earlier blog post gave a much different impression. I hope what you quoted stays true.

So do I. :crossed_fingers:

I’ve always installed addons manually. If they force me to use an app, I’m going to look elsewhere for addons and that’s all there is to it.

Some people are fine doing that but many aren’t. I would never even consider it.

I think people are getting all worked up over nothing, here. Updating addons manually takes seconds.

I’ll either manually install them or just not use addons. No way will I support Overwolf or w/e the hell they are called.

Not even close. I have 72 so I will never update manually.

I run a bunch of addons, too. Let me share some secrets with you:

  1. I update DBM, WeakAuras, Angry Assignments, and RC Loot Council about twice a month.
  2. I update other addons twice a year.

That’s all it takes. You don’t need to update them every day. You don’t even need to update them when they get updated.

MOST ADDON UPDATES ARE IRRELEVANT. Those DBM updates that happen multiple times a day? They generally don’t matter. DBM will tell you (and stop working) if it really does need to be updated. The rest of the time, it’s making changes that will never affect you and that you don’t even notice.

And updating addons in WoW is trivially easy.

It’s not like we’re talking Kerbal Space Program, where you can easily run hundreds of addons and addons in KSP have dependencies on OTHER addons which must be matching the same version number or your game won’t even start up, and several core addons like Kopernicus are generally 6-8 months behind the current version of the game, so a large portion of your addon suite that relies on Kopernicus must be running 6-8 month old addon versions while addons that DON’T need Kopernicus can be from the most recent build.

In WoW? You drop it into the addon folder. Done.

Hey you do you but I will always keep my addons on the most current update and I will always use an addon manager.
