Overwolf Client and Addon Management - PLEASE Don't Support This!

How come I didn’t find this before. Ajour is so much better than that twitch electron cancer and already 1000x times better than Overwolf cancer would be.

I uninstalled Twitch as soon as I found WowUP. Ajour isn’t bad but I like WowUp better.

WowUP is so freaking easy and clean to use…don’t have to log in …don’t have too remember a password…don’t have to supply a email addy …simple install and go…

Recommend TukUI instead if youre a minimalist.

Wowup is my go to now. Shout out to those guys for stepping in.

I play in Linux, unfortunately I wasn’t able to run WowUp in wine. Ajour has native Linux client, which runs really smoothly.

Let’s hope that most add-on authors move to WoWinterface dotcom.

Go, Minion, go! Now is your time to shine!! \o/

I tried minion once… I’ll pass.

Now is a good time to mention the first to do this in Warcraft, a program that was quickly copied and taken over by the big kids.

Wowmatrix

Yep, that was there first and it still exists. It’s also a far better way to support addon developers and gives more freedom to the creators.

I feel like Tuk and Elv are just pale attempts at copying my custom Ui, one that has evolved over many years and while some stuff like KGPanels doesn’t work right now, I can’t live without zperl and bartender. Some addons are just too brilliant to be replaced by mere imitations.

Currently I use 168 addons.

Actually we primarily use Github as it’s easier for developers the only reason they end up on curse, WOWInterface, etc is because users can’t navigate github easily.

I just wish Garrison Commander and the other Commander addons would update, I really love the developers work and can’t even open the mission interfaces without the brilliance that is Garrison Commander. I miss KGPanels and Move Anything quite a bit too. Xhinhuan should’ve taken over this whole mess, guy was a beast way back in the day.

wowmatrix for life, never did like curse, it stole from wowmatrix just like every other addon manager has stolen from Curse, but Wowmatrix has been around LONG before any of the others and it still works to this very day.

I have to come up with a name for these people. you know the ones who will argue against anything that is a popular topic and they do this on all the threads.

just for the sake of arguing against it. not becuase they actually believe in anything

If they don’t mess with the api…

Strongbox for Mac or Linux is awesome even downloads from github if addon is there

https://github.com/ogri-la/strongbox

It may be capable of doing it, but this is a direct quote from the GitHub page on Ajour (and it says something similar on that link you provided):

Addons will be parsed automatically and resolved from multiple repositories:

  • tukui
  • curse

Overlay isn’t in game, it’s just in app forced over the game.

Won’t be in the addon, but hit a flight path or loading screen and you’ll see one.

It’s 100% unacceptable.

Honestly I’d love if blizz would host addons and let us update directly through the client.

Unpopular opinion incoming: I’d even be willing to pay for it as long as the price wasn’t stupid.

Insert sappy music here and sad players with loads of “out of date” addons
Tired of shady clients? The thought of manually updating them all makes you dizzy? Don’t know what you’re doing and just need a button? For only $1 a month you can manage your addons from in game! No fuss, no muss, just swing by your addon tab and hit update!
sappy music fades out showing happy players and “recently updated” on addon tab

Maybe it will eventually but at the current moment all I see is Curse as a source. Though it did update my Elvui to the latest version it doesn’t have Elvui/Tukui or any of the Elvui plugins (not hosted on Curse) available for download.

Edit: tmw you take a screenshot only to forget to add it lol

Also, in case anyone hasn’t seen

Clarification — This post has been edited to address the inaccuracies posted on Reddit and Twitter. We have not, nor are we planning to send cease and desist letters, or close down access to 3rd party mod managers. We are actively seeking conversations with these developers to find sustainable solutions to the following items:

Authors’ consent when it comes to third party distribution of their IP
How to address the impact on Authors’ earnings
How to lessen the impact on CurseForge’s servers and CDN

To be clear: nothing is changing, and we’re not turning off access for any 3rd party managers. We’re just looking to have a discussion and find solutions.

They claim there’s a misunderstanding and the API isn’t going anywhere (so whatever app you choose to use will work for the foreseeable future) but time will tell :man_shrugging:

It’s really not that bad. I have never used an addon manager because of times like this. If you become reliant upon an addon manager and something pulls the rug out from under it, you no longer know how to do it yourself.

Just update your own addons you will never run into a problem like this again.

I can manually install an addon in under 1 min.

I use firefox with ghostery to block all ads, unwanted scripts etc.
I have a shortcut to my collection on 9.0 addons.
Winrar installed.

When I need to update an addon:

  • Hit the download button
  • Got to my browser download list
  • Open folder containing the download and ‘cut’ it
  • Open 9.0 addon folder and ‘paste’ new addon there
  • open addon which runs winrar, and it saves the last destination with is the retail addon folder.
  • Done.

Lua is human readable.

Every WoW addon is inherently open source.

You can literally just open any addon .lua or .xml in notepad and peruse the code as you see fit.
