Talk to your guildies first… because it will leave some stuff changed even after an uninstall. It is an amazing addon, but like I said… It changes everything.
I get that. I’ve been using it or tukui since wrath… I’m at a point where I can’t play the game without it.
I feel the same about mine.
(llars trembles, goes white in the face, and stutters “sseventty tttwo…”)
What I’m saying is that if an add-on client wants to take the lead and make a better solution for this I’m sure a lot of authors would start posting to those places. No one seems to have a good opinion of overwolf, so there’s an opportunity to migrate to a new client and get everyone onboard.
That depends on how much financial incentive they have to stick with CurseForge/Overwolf.
Let’s hope there is none. This could drastically change how all of us manage add-ons and as someone who uses like over 50 of them, I am not updating manually.
Unfortunately there will be.
“We want to make modding a legit profession, and we want to find ways for modders to make a living. With 70–80% of ad revenue going to creators and distributed based on mod usage”
Thank you for this post, I casually use addons. Used to used the curse client, then twitch, but I didn’t really know what was going on this time around because all of the threads about this started out assuming everyone just know what overwolf is so I only had a minor assumption of what it was.
Thanks for clearing that up, and also Blizzard needs to step in here. If someone is breaking their ToS then clearly something can be done about it, I would hope. There can’t be zero legal recourse for them when someone is disrupting their intended use of their product, again I would hope.
I’ll install manually when it comes down to it.
People like these Overwolf jerks are the kind of leeches we don’t need in society. The add-on creators are doing the work and Overwolf is just leeching off of them.
They’re gonna have a quick run of that before blizzard shuts down access to their api. I bet this is going to turn into a HUGE fight.
and 70% gets this much usage, prob. a bit more than 80%?
Kinda like advertising… or insurance…
Unless they try to have ads show ingame I don’t really see blizzard getting involved.
but ads are shown in game, it pops up directly in your face, from the overlay.
I learned my lesson about add ons I do them manually now and only that way. I don’t like what I am hearing about this group at all.
Greedy Wolves have deeper pockets than Little Red Writing Code.
In a fight, the wolves are gonna win.
so, don’t Fight.
All that needs to be NOT done is feed them.
Not unless they already lied.
“Eventually, as we’ve seen with gaming apps, we believe non-intrusive in-app ads will support mod authors and help them invest more time and effort in their creations. That said — you’ll never see an ad in-game, just in-app. You’re definitely not going to see any ads inside WoW addons or anything wonky like that.”
In the old PC days, they called that model shareware. Doesn’t really exist anymore, at least not like back then.
Key word is eventually, its still striken with pop up ads in the middle of your screen, its being currently done in OW and HOTS. And i’m not tolerating that. Especially since they have the same problems of malware ads.
I’m not planning on using it I’ll use WowUp as long as I can. I’m just point out there won’t be ads ingame. As for malware ads I got one of those from the old Curse Client.
Yeah, I’ll just manually update. Tedious, sure, but not worth this crap. Another example of “one step forward, two steps back.” I didn’t mind using the Twitch app at all (and will continue to use it for so long as it works); however, I’ve not heard a good thing about Overwolf ever and am glad I never had cause to ever even look at their site.
