I’m debating rolling an Alliance alt just for fun. What, if anything, can my Horde characters mail to this alt? Do I just need to start from scratch in terms of materials and gold?

Don’t quote me on it, but I think BoA items may be mailable cross faction, i.e. the Tome of Cold Weather Flying and Heirlooms–which would be a nice boon to a leveling character.
Apart from that I think you’re going to have to use the Neutral AH or find people to do reciprocal exchanges with to get resources over to that character.

Correct, you can only mail BOA items (cold weather flying and heirlooms). Outside of that your out of luck outside of the neutral AH.
I’d level without doing that and get a feel gor the Alliance economy on the server. If prices are good you can make bank. I had 20g by level 20 on my server and 230g by level 40 and I’m about to hit 50 and above 400g.
The game doesn’t let you mail anything or use your own auctions, which is stupid. This means you’ll have to get someone else to help you move things over. That’s what I did several times when I played alliance side. I have a human paladin at 70 that I got full gear on back in S3 of crusade. I regretted it in the end though because it separated me from group posts on my own faction and moving stuff was more trouble than it was worth. I don’t plan to do this ever again.

I nuked my Belf and Femdorf DKs last weekend (RIP Brewfest cheevos) just so I could reincarnate each of them on the opposite faction account. this will allow me to use my two DK alts to carry lower level alts through lower level dungeons. it’s also very handy for layer swaps and creating raids.
if I want to send DK alts money or items, I either have to deal with the 1-hour mail delay, or I have to send the equipment to a different alt, then trade the gear from the alt the DK.
